What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
When I am accomplishing a photoshoot, the perfect shot is the one the client will feel compelled to return to again and again. They will frame it, create a canvas print, use as their profile photo, etc. For me, capturing the perfect shot means listening to my clients, and I mean really listen, and deliver a beautiful gallery that will be cherished for a lifetime.
The secret is to listen and respect the people who are trusting you with their time and money.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
When photographing people, whether this be an event or portraiture, it's important to understand where their strength and confidence lies, and celebrate those things. It is very important, especially while accomplishing event photography to create a shot list that is approved by the client. This means going through the itinerary and discussing photo opportunities, and asking specific questions about the event and guest list.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about photography and making it my profession, is the diversity of people I work with and projects I am able to accomplish on a daily/weekly basis. I am able to deliver a variety of smiles and joy, and capture memories that people will cherish for a lifetime.
When working with my corporate and media clients, I love the part when I have accomplished something helpful for a team. It feels good to solve problems.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have had many jobs in my field, as well as the service industry, while getting my start in starting my photography business. One job that stands out was in college (2001!) when I was a staff photographer at the Seattle Space Needle. I wore a name tag and photographed tourists in front of a green screen. I love my journey and encourage all people to keep creating whether they do it for hobby or profession.
