Great composition- understand what effects the final picture should have on viewers and pre-plan the final outcome accordingly. For “people shots”, our studio allows customers to see what the final shot would be through a live monitor even before the shot is taken.

Lighting - cameras work exactly like our eyes; we only see light. Without proper lighting, the picture is not visible or at best under exposed. Also, the quality is not good. A skilled photographer however, doesn’t just light up his pictures, but uses lights like a paint brush to transform ordinary scenes into magnificent pictures by strategically positioning the lights at different angles and intensities to give desired effects. Also, light modifiers can help to control the hardness of lights on subjects and give flattering looks, especially to the skin. Our stidios have some permanently installed lights that provide the standard lighting setup and also, other movable ones that we then use to accentuate the composition for extra effects.

Camera settings - The camera setting, especially for professionals, can prove extremely vital because, depending on what the final desired picture is, the settings influence, the color, sharpness , depth, stability, vibrance, and so much more of the resulting images. In fact, all cameras have settings but the ones on phones and other (point and shoot) non professional cameras have already been preset. Of course theres also a preset automatic option on professional cameras as well, but these are limiting and do not allow the user to express their creativity properly.

Lens- There are lenses for different scenes and using the correct lens gives the perfect image. Lenses could also be used for for creative shots, for instance using a wide lens to exaggerate perspective on a subject can bring very artistic results, or using an 85mm or 50mm lens on closeup portraits could give flattering yet intimate results. Lenses also create depth in photographs, emphasizing focus on the subject and blurring out potential distractions.

Camera angle is another factor in getting great images. General human perceptions make us see a person in a picture taken from the top down as vulnerable or in a pitiable, low state. Angling the camera upwards a little so that the viewer is “looking up” to the subject can evoke a sense of authority or confidence. Of course this rule could be broken depending in the creative concept of the photographer.

Directing / Acting- if the subject is human, then they must be directed to “look the part” that they wish to achieve from the photograph. It js usually preferred that the subject know how to express themselves so that the shot is natural but a good photographer must help to give direction until the desired expression is achieved.

The final factor I will include is editing. The editing (or touch-up) is like icing in the cake, but in fact a bit more. At Jerreme Josephson Studios, we edit according to the preferences of customer. Some require light touch-ups while we go the whole nine yards for others to perform what we call visual effects editing. The results of our edits are stunning yet natural looking and we understand editing so well. We know that photographs are like paintings and some features on individuals may become more prominent or (sometimes) “buried” our visual effects editing brings out what is desired and blends in what is less desired. We are capable of doing anything to improve the look of an image without loosong the natural look and feel.

In conclusion, a picture is a work of art that evokes feelings or impressions in the minds of its viewers. This is largely dependent on the creative ideas of the photographer and these factors are generally ideal factors. However, creativity must be set free, therefore, none of the above factors is cast in stone. Also, there are many more factors to explore as the creativity leads.
