I worked with Hubbell & Hubbell Architects on the construction of four straw bale residences for the sisters at Deer Park Monastery. I have worked with numerous architects during my career and Drew Hubbell is clearly one of the best that I have ever worked with. His passion for green building and sustainable design is matched with his understanding and experience with utilizing alternative green materials. Hubbell & Hubbell takes a holistic approach to design which encompasses the specific requirements of the client, the unique characteristics of the site, the artistic possibilities of design and the practical limitations of budgets and schedules. The staff of Hubbell & Hubbell were very hands-on throughout the entire construction project responding to the request of the contractor and the needs of the clients. If you have a deep respect for our planet and want to create a home or a building that is in harmony with both your values and the environment, you owe it to yourself (and our planet) to work with Hubbell & Hubbell Architects. Hubbell and Hubbell Architects created a beautiful one-of-a-kind Interpretive Center for the Olivenhain Municipal Water District at the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve in Escondido California. This building contains many unique artistic components and is just about as environmentally friendly as a building can get. It is powered 100% by a photovoltaic system, its walls are made of Perform Wall and it has a living roof. The Olivenhain Municipal Water District and our partners on this project The Escondido Creek Conservancy could not be happier with our Hubbell and Hubbell facility. More...

Years ago, we attended a tour of energy efficient houses and were able to see several homes designed by Drew Hubbell of Hubbell & Hubbell Architects. When we had an opportunity to build a home of our own, we contacted him right away. Drew was a wonderful partner through every step. He visited our property before we made an offer on it, to give us advice and ideas. Throughout the process it was a pleasure to work with Drew. Skeptics warned us that building a straw bale house on a “burn-out” lot in Poway would be a tough sale to the local building department. Drew’s patience, knowledge, and gentle persuasive abilities made the process a joy. The local building inspectors loved our plans. The home we have now reflects our personalities and our dreams. A strawbale home has an earthy, grounded feeling that must be experienced to be understood. We love welcoming friends and family (and an occasional tour of people curious about energy efficient construction) to our home. ~ Vince & Paula More...

I got a good recommendation from a third party to call Hubble, but other than that I did know their firm from Adam. After meeting on my property with the boss man I was sold. The whole firm really had an ability to put me at ease and approach the challenges of my project with confidence. They were very sensitive to my financial limitations, and available every step of the way. When my permitting process came down to the wire, the whole team stepped up for my cause. I felt like part of the team, and when I was about to throw in the white towel they sat me down, calmed me down, and helped me organize a successful plan.
My home is almost enclosed now and the design is really a gem expressing quality and simplicity. I can without hesitation say they are one of the best in the business here in San Diego County!

We chose Hubbell & Hubbell Architects for our major home remodel because we believe they are different than anyone else out there. When we started on this remodel journey, we were inspired by the architecture of the Carmel cottages, Gaudi's Casa Batllo, and California Storybook-style homes, and we needed architects who could help us translate those ideas and our 1950's bungalow into our "forever home" within a budget. After our first meeting with Drew Hubbell, we quit looking. Drew Hubbell and Alex Miller have gone above and beyond, walking us through every small thing with great patience, knowledge, and skill. Being a first-time home remodeler, I have never felt like a bother with my 1000s of questions, and Drew and Alex are genuinely excited about our home. They are willing and able to work out and explore all the small bits that make our home truly special and truly "us," and they incorporate artistry, user-friendliness, and environmental awareness in a beautiful way. I also appreciate that they gently and kindly tell me when something I dream up won't work or isn't practical in our budget, and help me explore alternatives. When I got stuck thinking and rethinking (and rethinking) the windows, they worked with me patiently and with a good sense of humor to get me unstuck and to make sure that I would be happy with the final plans. They have helped us think through solar, rainwater catchment systems, gray water, and handicap accessibility all while keeping to a bungalow/cottage/ Storybook aesthetic. They are well respected in the community, and their honesty, humility, and creativity have kept us from worrying during our major remodel. Everyone in the office is incredibly helpful and friendly. They work very well with our contractor, and are engaged and involved at the right times during our building process. They are balanced, compassionate professionals who care about their work, their clients, their community, and their world, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. It has been so much fun, and I cannot wait to see the finished product! More...
