Hounds Town Garden City

I want to start off by saying that my dog is a regular boarder and we have never had an issue with the wonderful establishments he has stayed at. Unfortunately, the week of February break, they were booked up so after reading the reviews of Hounds Town we decided to give the Commack one a try. We picked up our dog Max on the way back from the airport. He usually greets us with high pitched yelps so excited, but on this day, he came out, tail down, absolutely filthy (yellow) and looked so upset. The girl who brought him out told me he “played a lot” and one day he seemed to have a bothered front right paw, but was “totally fine”. After getting Max in our car, he immediately slept. The smell was so bad, we had to roll down our windows. It wasn’t too long before we realized he was covered in urine. It was so bad, my husband used a towel to wrap him in and we immediately gave him a bath. After his bath, we noticed his right front paw was extremely swollen and his arms, chest, neck, and armpits were covered in a terrible rash. I wrote an email to the commack location the next day (Saturday) and they returned my call on Sunday. The manager Jamie was defensive and told me that they clean the floors and because my dog is 11 he laid down a lot. I expressed how upset I was and how much pain my dog was in and it was bc of a urine burn. Dogs get that when they sit in urine for an extensive period of time. She told me that they will refund the stay in full and asked me to follow up with her after we see the vet. The vet concluded it was a bad skin infection and his paw was extremely infected also. I called Jamie back and left a VM for her. When she returned my call, she was helping customers when I was explaining the diagnosis which I found to be extremely rude. Once again, she kept blaming the dogs age and the fact that he laid down which has NOTHING to do with keeping my dog safe and cared for. No one rechecked his paw during his stay. No one cared he was saturated in urine all week, so much that he got a serious infection. He was placed on an anti-inflammatory, anti biotic and needs a medicated bath 3x/ week for a minimum of 10 days. Jamie told me she spoke with her boss and they can reimburse me for the vet bill and to submit the bill and diagnosis. I emailed her the bill which was $164 and the letter from the vet and she responded with an email blaming my dog AGAIN and telling me that bc I chose not to get him a bath and bc I signed the mandatory liability waiver, they will NOT cover any vet bills. She even mentioned how dogs get dirty. Dogs absolutely get dirty during their stay and we asked for him to be groomed on the last day, but they couldn’t promise he’ll be done at 1:30 and we didn’t want to wait since it’s 40min from our home and we were coming from the airport. Regardless, a bath wouldn’t stop his infection at the end of the week. Not ONCE did a single staff member even call us once to check on Max to see how he’s doing. His rash is still present (day 10) and he needs to be rechecked by the vet on Thursday. I’m absolutely disgusted by the treatment and lack of care regarding my pup. Max is an extremely well behaved dog, who boards regularly and NO DOG deserves this. More...

Absolutely appalling treatment of dogs. My friend’s dog was there for a week and he came home with severe urine burn. While the kennel reimbursed them for the stay, they did not cover the extensive vet bills incurred for the treatment of his infections from laying in urine everyday. Stay away from this place. They do not care about animals. They care only about profits, understaffed by the fact that they had over 65 dogs in their open kennel with puddles of fecal matter and urine everywhere at all times.
