I hired HQR for a small-ish job. They did a pretty good job overall, although there were a few instances where the plans weren't followed very closely, and we had to backtrack and redo some things to make it fit. (There was also an incident with a fire sprinkler discharging, which may or may not have been related to the work).Avi is very responsive as a project manager and great with customer service and communication. I think there's a bit to be desired though in terms of attention to detail and organization. More...

Be prepared for a long review...Contacted HQR along with about five others after intense research of ensuring the GC has to have good presence on the internet via different social media platforms, that the GC is licensed, insured and bonded, been in business for a number of years, has a good rating on BBB and etc. you get the picture. After the 5th or so one, we narrowed it down to two: HQR and one other GC that was a very, very close contender who was on the peninsula side. We even asked another contractor friend for his input as to which he would go with and he said you can't go wrong with either. What did put HQR ahead of the other GC was that we would be working with Ron even though he came in a tad higher in quote. He was easy to talk to, seemed like a straight forward and honest guy.Our project started in the Fall of COVID so we knew there would be delays and set backs. We would rate our project as big since it involved full kitchen remodel, removing walls, full bathroom make overs and etc.We went over what we wanted/envisioned and it was awesome to have Karina, their in house 3-D designer help bring things to life. That was super helpful and might I add a cool tool for those who cannot visually see things but need it in front of them. Next was the architecture...Now we didnt have an architecture so we relied on Ron to help us source one and well the person we worked with wasnt all that great. He missed details and changed things that we didnt want him to change. We are no experts in this field and relied on him to make recommendations about certain things and let's just say he wasnt that helpful. Luckily, we have family that knew a thing or two about architecture and had advised us on the side and we took those suggestions back to him. There is the standard range then there is custom and well we never felt he tried hard to help is in that aspect. OK...so finally we were able to move past the architecture and Ron pulled all the permits for us which was super nice. We hear its not hard to do but hey if the GC does it for you its one less thing you have to worry about. Once permits were approved, Ron had his guys come through for the demo and they were super fast! We couldn't believe how fast they got done and hauled away stuff. There were things we wanted to salvage and they were good about holding onto the stuff and putting it aside for us.Next trenches were all over in our house, walls removed and etc. Things went pretty well for the next several weeks. Ron would keep us up to date of what was happening next and we started to put in orders for our appliances and pick out different finishes. We just wished we started this process much sooner since COVID really put a delay on our project. Many of the things were out of stock, back ordered and etc. I guess we knew that the delay would happen just didnt think it would have taken as long as it did? Anyhow, as you may know if you open up walls and floors you are bound to find problems and or upgrades/updates that have to happen by code because our home was on the older side. This is no fault of anyone but just speaking out loud for those who are thinking of remodeling to really build in cushion for your budget because you will go over. We went over by quite a bit more than we wanted to but it was either get this done now while walls are already open or do it later which means opening back up walls later. Things like electrical subpanel, maybe your foundation needs some work, maybe an updated water tank/heater, updated plumbing, special valves that are now required by the city/county etc. just to name a few. So we got a number of things done since everything was already out in the open as previously stated. One thing we appreciated was that Ron pointed these things out but never did we feel forced to do the work. Everything was a recommendation/suggestion and totally up to us if we wanted to proceed forward or not, no pressure. So while Ron is the GC note that there is the foreman/main man that is usually at the job site to ensure T's are crossed and I's are dotted. Who we were assigned was a nice fellow. He too was easy to talk to and easy to work with. Even made recommendations that we hadn't thought to do and it worked out well. The great thing is Ron will always make sure you are happy with the work. If you aren't happy with the work, he will have it redone and in our case we did have some stuff redone because we didn't like the way it looked/turned out.Unlike some GCs you pay as the job gets completed. Ron does not ask for money upfront other than a small deposit to show your serious about entering a contract together. The rest was you only pay after the job is done and you sign off on it. We are really pleased with the work and would recommend working with HQR without hesitation! More...

So, this contractor's HQ is a 22 min drive away from my home. They have projects from the North to South Bay, and all along SF and the East Bay. HQ is in Concord. So, I made an appointment online for an estimate. Just like another company I recently reviewed, they canceled my appointment. Apparently, I'm outside of their service area...even though I am closer to their HQ than most of their projects. WTH? I was told...they don't service homes East of Concord.Personally, I don't know what's wrong with these contractors? To me, it feels like many have a prejudice against communities "East of Concord". Money is money, they won't be charging any less!Anyway, I call them asking why am I not in their service area when I am a 20 minute drive away from their office. I ask if they are afraid of traveling East of Concord? I say, "You guys service Oakland, which has a much higher crime rate,"and the lady tells me, "Actually, we do not service Oakland,"Um? First of all, a ton of their reviews are from Oakland! Perhaps she meant they only service the Oakland Hills?I don't know if they have a prejudice against working on homes that they don't feel are in prestigious neighborhoods? I'm disgusted by all of these contractors who think they are too good for certain areas. I will continue to leave reviews about these types of contractors so people in Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Oakley, Antioch, and Pittsburg don't even bother to waste their time contacting them. Apparently, the homes along the Delta are not worth remodeling. I currently own 3 homes, and working on a 4th. I also have a home that needs a complete renovation in the SF area. All I need is a good contractor to trust with multiple projects. 1-star because I cannot give zero stars. An extra star for the woman who tried to come up with reasons why they don't service homes within a 20-30 minute radius of their office, but take on projects that are 1-3 hours away. More...

We hired HQR and worked with Shelly on our bathroom remodel project in San Mateo. Shelly and her crew transformed our bathrooms into spaces that feel like home and a vacation at the same time. When searching for contractors, we selected HQR because of their responsiveness and collaborative mentality. Shelly and her crew carried the same approach through our project, and finished on budget and ahead of schedule. Having gone through a number of construction projects, onetime and on-budget completion is rare; ahead of schedule is unheard of. Shelly was always available for questions and followed through on every detail. More...

Home Quality Remodeling recently remodeled my kitchen, and I am very pleased with the final result.  It looks exactly as I had imagined it.  The cost was very competitive, and the process was professional.  They went a bit over the three week time frame they promised, but it was worth it.  I couldn't be happier.  I was hesitant to get this job done during a pandemic, but I decided to go ahead with it.  The crew put up a tight plastic barrier around the work site and wore masks.  When I expressed concern about the crew walking through my house to use the bathroom, the project manager, Ronnie, immediately ordered a port-a-pot for them to use.Ronnie, Miguel and crew were all very pleasant and professional.  Ronnie kept the project running smoothly, from permit to engineering consults, to ordering supplies, to inspections.  I paid only when they had completed the appropriate phase of the project. If I had it to do over again, I would hire Home Quality Remodeling. I needed a small bathroom remodeled. Their quote was around average. They started on time and handled some permitting snags gracefully. Overall the work quality was decent. Unfortunately, the project dragged on for months. Some those delays were due to some permitting issues on my side. However, after those had been resolved, the project continued to drag on for weeks. In the end, they finished the project within budget. The tiling work was subpar (one wall leans, a shower drain was not mounted correctly). They cut a huge hole in my garage ceiling which was not patched back up. At nearly every stage of the process, I was asked to write them checks for work that had not been completed yet.In the end, I mostly got the bathroom I wanted at the price they promised but experienced several bumps and lapses along the way More...

We hired HQR for bathroom remodel in our house. Rafael was our project manager. As we proceeded with the project, we discovered additional issues with our house that required repair, so we expanded the scope of the project to repair an exterior wall with water damage, apply stucco to the exterior of our entire house, and also replace our existing metal roof with asphalt shingles. The whole project took about 1.5 years end to end. We are happy with the new beautiful bathrooms, roof and exterior walls built by Rafael's team.Rafael is very responsive to our questions and concerns through out the project. We mainly used Whatsapp to communicate, which is very useful when I didn't have time take phone calls at work. During the main phase of our project, Rafael also visited us in person once per week to discuss progress. We appreciate how Rafael kept us informed, and also patiently explained many details in remodeling to us, which is important for us when making decisions during our project. There were some period of time where Rafael was visiting Israel. Even when he was having a time zone difference, he managed to respond to our questions within 24 hours and managed the project remotely. There were some challenges during the project and Rafael always made sure that any issues occurred was taken care of. We don't have to worry about mistakes from the construction crew. e.g.1) When testing the shower pan of our new upstairs bathroom, water leakage occurred and we found that water came out of a light bulb downstairs. Rafael had his crew fix the water leakage on the following day, and also opened the ceiling and walls in the affected areas to ensure that there is no water damage inside before re-sealing them.2) During the construction of our new roof, the roofer took a misstep and his leg punched a hole in the interior ceiling of our living room. Rafael sent his crew to repair our interior ceiling to ensure that the repaired area has the same texture, and repaint our entire ceiling (we have a large ceiling) so that no signs of repair is left. We are happy to recommend Rafael to be the project manager of your construction project since we know that he treats our house as his own and will ensure the project is finished of high quality and to our satisfaction. Ron, Avi and the guys at HQR did a stellar job on our huge home remodel. We added a second story to our small 2-1 craftsman bungalow in Oakland, nearly doubling it in size. We also moved a kitchen and living room wall and completely gutted our very old kitchen. We basically rebuilt the entire home, while doing out best retain and restore the character of our nearly 100 year old home.We had tried to start this process over a few years, running into snags and unethical contractors along the way, and are so happy that we landed in the capable hands of this team. At every step along the way, we felt honestly communicated with and cared for on a personal level. In addition to this, all of the subcontractors they worked with were top notch as well as courteous and considerate of our neighbors. Not only did they do a remarkable job and make our house the talk of the neighborhood, they went above and beyond to really be sure we were always 100% happy with all of the work being done. I am so impressed with HQR's work on our project. The team was led by Ofri and Miguel. This was a bathroom remodel necessitated by a flood in the bathroom. Our elderly mother lived there and the second bathroom was up a steep staircase. Without prompting, Ofri recognized the urgency of the project. We signed the contract and before the ink was dry, HQR had someone at the city building department pulling the permit, which was issued a mere days later. The team started immediately and worked on weekends, on the July 4th holiday, and until 9 p.m. on some days. I especially appreciated how carefully Ofri and Miguel's team followed standard COVID-19 protocols at all times, including wearing masks and gloves and avoiding close contact with those in the house. The project was completed ahead of schedule. The quality of work was great, but what was even better was when we were headed down the wrong path, they pointed it out and allowed us to make the final decision. There were changes to the original plans, and HQR understood and undertook the changes without missing a beat. During the construction, we would occasionally mention a minor detail about the paint that we wanted or the shape of the edge on the tile. It was amazing - they never forgot and always followed through with what we had discussed. I would gladly use Ofri and Miguel again. Thank you for the excellent work and the beautiful bathroom!
