Happi Spatula

I really really wanted to like this place because there are not nearly enough Thai restaurants to choose from in this area. I ordered the Tofu Fresh Rolls and a Tom Kha soup with Chicken. The fresh rolls were OK, but there was no rice noodles inside the roll, and when combined with the peanut sauce was lacking in salt and flavor. The Tom Kha had none of the characteristic ingredients - I found no lemon grass (there there were 2 chunks of sliced lemon which was weird), there was no galangal, there were no kefir lime leaves and I could barely taste the coconut milk. I got it 1 star spiciness but that should not have reduced the lemongrass/galangal/lime flavors. It really just tasted like chicken & vegetable soup with a hint of coconut milk. Really underwhelming flavor, and could use more salt too. But I did like all of the veggies in the soup and fresh rolls had a lot of veggies too. Hopefully they improve on the flavor because this could be a great go-to spot! More...

We had Danny and Jennifer cater a birthday party for us and the food was incredible!! We were blown away! We had the orange chicken, lettuce wraps, bulgogi beef and sushi and it was a hit! The food was so flavorful, and they had many vegetarian options. They were so kind and thoughtful throughout the whole process and made the day feel special. We had a Chamber lunch event here today. Every member raved about the healthy good food. Also nice outdoor area and I had my Irish Wolfhound with me who appreciated the calm shady outdoor area and water dish provided. A bit of a unique setup inside with the market up front and the kitchen and ordering in the back so I can see some of the other reviews.  I used the online ordering tool on their website and it was easy to use.  The food took a few minutes longer than quoted (although I found some hard to find asian gluten free ingredients at the market while I waited).  When I took my first bite I realized why.  The Eggplant Basil Stir Fry was perfect.  Crispy veggies great flavor and beautiful Japanese eggplant.  Followed that up with the 3 Mushroom Ginger and added the USDA beef which was so so Umami.  Then finally got to the best part which was the Bulgogi Fresh Sping Roll which was Minty Beef with a great ponzu dipping sauce.  Last, we tried the Pad Thai which was good and clean but not great.  I would order it again though as it is better than most Thai restaurants.  If you are not in a hurry and looking for quality fresh food this is your spot!!! Friday evening, 5:45 pm, thought we'd try the newer Happy Spatula in Vista for take out ...hadn't been there yet and wanted to support local. Cute place but very confusing.... Walked in, looked for a menu, found one paper lunch menu (nice girl at counter said that was what we should order off of but add $2 for dinner prices) also a video screen on wall with menu but impossible to really read as it kept changing to a different screen.  Finally placed our order to go at the counter and decided to sit on their nice little patio while we waited....and waited....and waited. Almost 45 minutes later we went up to the counter to ask how much longer it will be,. The girl at the counter apologized and said there were three more orders ahead of us but it would be soon, although our order wasn't even started on yet. Ughh!!! We said okay, please just cancel our order and refund our money....she tried but the register wouldn't let her. We weren't just going to let them keep $67 so finally the only other person (who was cooking in back and either the owner or manager) came out and apologized and refunded our money.  We felt bad for them as obviously they are seriously understaffed and overwhelmed. We were not the only ones waiting forever for our food. This place could really do well if they could just get it together. We'd like to give them another shot but will wait awhile until they get things running smoothly. More...

I tried the Korean beef spring roll, bao, and drunken noodles. The bao was very good. The Korean beef spring roll was ok but it fell apart 1/4 of the way through eating it. I am so excited about the menu AND the little grocery store.  I was a little confused on the ordering situation, but someone quickly explained all to me.    So you can order off of their menu or get food off the bar that is charged by how much it weighs. The stuff on the bar looked really good and fresh, but I had to try their Bulgogi off the menu for my first time.  The Great - The food was really good but my favorite was the Bao Bun.The Good - The fried rice was delicious / The shop was AWESOMEThe Bad - Being on my lunch break, I was concerned about the timeliness of the food delivery.  Now that I know how to order, I think I won't waste as much time trying to decide what I want.   The Ugly - NA The bulgogi was very different from any I've ever had before.  It was deliciously spicy, but the sauce was a vinegar based hot sauce it seemed.  I really liked it, but it was not anything I'd expected!  With the lunch special you get a GREAT helping of your dish and you can choose the fried potstickers or eggroll.
