I can't say enough good things about this place.  I went here for assistance in releasing my diaphragm.  I saw Tim for a session of bodywork and acupuncture.  The treatment worked amazingly.  I also received relief from some chronic hip pain.  I have been avoiding foot and hip surgery for about 8 years now, so have seen some of the best health and naturalists, etc in NYC.  Tim is top notch.  He carefully listened and asked questions, also told me up front that if he was unable to assist me he could refer me to someone who might be able to help.  It was not necessary, but I greatly that the patient's well being is the primary concern. I also appreciated the vibe and attitude, etc of everyone else on the staff.  It's truly a place dedicated to healing and it shows. More...

I've been coming to BAP for at least 4 years now. I regularly see Brittany Griffin. BAP is great at keeping notes on their clients here, so even if you take a little break and then come back they will be able to recall/look up your history. The location is very accesible by train and the space is very relaxing, safe and calm.I will keep coming back here as long as I am in Brooklyn. The relaxing atmosphere and expertise of their practitioners is spectacular. I love supporting this community oriented endeavour. They have a sliding scale based pay rate, which is very reasonable and allows you to choose how much you can afford to pay. Appointments are sometimes combinations of acupuncture, cupping and herbal prescriptions, and any other services they offer. It's a communal space, but they do ensure a reasonable amount of privacy, although you will receive acupuncture in one of rooms with other people also receiving treatment nearby.   This has ever bothered me, as there always seems to be enough space and I kinda like that everyone is getting their relax on together.Overall a great place to go! My husband woke up this morning with such terrible back ache he could barely get out of bed. The moment I got him to agree I ran to yelp for a suggestion and found BAP. I was afraid I would not be able to get same day service but the employee at BAP was very helpful and worked something out with us. We rushed there and it was a pleasant experience from the beginning. Parking was a breeze, the entrance to the building is beautiful, and the moment the elevator door opens at BAP you are greeted with a lovely aroma of incense and helpful staff. My husband and I thought the sliding scale is awesome and allows people with different  budgets to pay diffident amounts. "It sounds cool, but I hate the idea of having needles stuck all over me." This is generally what I hear from friends who've never tried acupuncture before. And I get it; I was once one of them. I hate needles myself. They're painful and scary. However, when you've got ailments that make pinpricks look like, well, just pinpricks, acupuncture starts to make sense. Migraines first drove me into the arms of an Eastern medicine man in South Korea a few years ago, when the mysterious medications prescribed to me by the local Western clinician seemed too iffy and strong. Some crazy cupping bruises ensued, but the headaches vanished, along with the knots in my neck that were causing the problem. I remembered this magic trick recently, when a spate of back and knee pains pulled me out of my yoga-and-running routine. Yelp revealed that a sliding-scale acupuncture center lay just around the corner from my new NYC apartment, so I immediately made plans to submit my posterior for pincushioning. And I'm glad I did. The folks at this Gowanus gem fixed me up good, for an affordable price. When you first visit the BAP, you'll come in through the unassuming doorway, head upstairs in the elevator, and check in at the front desk. (I recommend making an appointment online first.) You're asked to pay based on your income level, then ushered into the low-lit, relaxing back room for your session, which might last an hour or two depending on what you need. The folks here get right to work, assessing your problem areas and pushing small pins into the offending tissue. After that, they'll cover you up with a heat blanket and let the needles do their work. Sometimes it hurts a bit at first, but soon, you'll find your tense muscles relaxing, in way that they won't even with a good bubble bath or massage. In fact, perhaps thanks to the peaceful music playing and the warm, welcoming atmosphere, I've seen plenty of folks fall asleep after the pins go in. After the pins come out, your acupuncturist might recommend cupping to move the blood around in your tissues, as a masseuse might with his/her hands, which means that a suction cup about an inch across is dragged over the offending area. Don't be scurred. Though you WILL look like you were mauled by a rabid octopus afterwards, you may well find that your back pain, shoulder pain or headaches are gone. Well worth it, in my book. As with a massage or physical therapy, the effects of acupuncture don't last forever. You kinda have to keep up with it, and obviously, if you've got chronic pain issues, you might need more serious help. But unlike strong meds that simply cover up the pain, acupuncture actually gets to the root of the problem, which is in and of itself a therapeutic thought for me. One that makes all that weird needle shi*t worthwhile. I definitely plan to go back, again and again, and feel so grateful that this affordable, community-minded organization exists in my 'hood! Affordable, flexible, effective health care!I'm young and was told by two GP's, an orthopedic doctor, a chiropractor, two PTs (with X Rays and MRI's) that nothing was actually wrong with my back and that I was too young to have back pain. Except that I had terrible, constant pain- that would interrupt my sleep, that would force me off my chair at work so I could lie on the floor.I came to BAP as a last ditch effort to cure my pain, et voila! During my first appt I explained that I was nervous about acupuncture, but I didn't know what else to do. The person who first treated me was very patient and understanding. At first I went twice a week for treatment. Eventually I came once a week. Now I go every couple of months. I can sit here now and say I HAVE NO PAIN which is incredible and something I didn't think would ever happen. Life changing. Its everything you want from GP, a one stop shop. I can go in for a cold and they will help me recover faster. I can go in for back pain maintenance, but they can also treat my thumb which I jammed last week playing sports. I'm currently in the midst of this terrible skin thing, which has nothing to do with my initial back pain, but they are helping me all the same. There is a rotating cast of acupuncturists which is great- you get to try out different approaches. One of them can do something super relaxing which will leave me feeling energized, another will take a more aggressive route which may not have been as relaxing but the effects are, as I said before, life changing. Needling is totally nothing to be scared of-- it can sometimes prick a bit, or be a little strange feeling but it usually fades after a few seconds. I often fall asleep once they are done. Depending on the placement, sometimes it will feel really strange or be sore if you try to move a muscle where there is a needle hanging out. And sometimes you won't notice. Change my life, why don't you, BAP? Good lord. I had never had acupuncture before I went to Brooklyn Acupuncture Project. My mom, aunt, and cousin all claim that acupuncture has helped them with various ailments - most significantly, my mom had some pretty serious carpal tunnel in her wrist that her job had paid for her to get physical therapy to help - but nothing helped more than acupuncture, which literally obliterated the problem . Like most of the other reviewers, I never considered this treatment because it is usually very expensive and I don't have insurance - yay America! :P - and also because having had many, many spinal taps in my life, I have had quite enough of needles, thank you. Or so I thought. When my cousin found BAP, there was really no excuse anymore. We all know I can suck it up for some major stabbing in my lumbar 4 and 5 (hey, I only cried the time they missed and hit my vertibrae!), and with the amazing sliding scale, this is an entirely afforable treatment. Also, after seeking Wesatern medical treatment *multiple times* for my heel fracture when I had school health insurance, and being told *multiple times* that I should just take ibuprofin.. and the pain got worse and worse... well, clearly it was time for acupuncture. I cannot speak highly enough about BAP. Aside from the fact that each treatment only costs me $18, the environment is soothing and comfortable, the staff professional, and the location convenient. I have had my appointments with Michael, who is gentle and sweet, and very attentive. He even emailed me a list of herbs I should buy to soak my heel  in to help with the recovery process. It was incredibly gratifying when, upon telling him the story about my heel fracture, he shook his head and looked geuinely upset, on my behalf, at my Western practioner. The first treatment helped a lot. Acupuncture doesn't exactly hurt, but it's sometimes uncomfortable. You sort of can't really move once the needles are inserted - and the one in my knee on the leg of my foot with the fracture was particularly uncomfortable. I'm trying to be as accurate as possible here - like when people ask me if getting tattooed hurts (it doesn't it's just uncomfortable) - acupuncture can be a little uncomfortable, but it has never hurt me. And the results are definitely worth it. After you get punctured, you sit in a calming room with exposed brick and soft lighting to have "a rest." It has never bothered me that you are with other people - in fact, I prefer it. I'm super partial to community settings, but even if you aren't, you're supposed to meditate/relax and let your qi rechannel itself anyway, so you aren't really present in the room so to speak. I really like the fact that you also get wrapped up in a tin-foil looking "cover" that makes me feel like a burrito. ;) I definitely recommend acupuncture - my pain has subsided substantially, not only in my heel but also in my shoulders, where Michael puts needles to relieve tension. It might seem strange, but it has definitely worked for me. And if you need some sort of Westernized medical explanation (which I don't, but maybe you do), Western practitioners believe that the needles stimulate nerves which release pain relieving natural chemicals. I'm so on board with the energy rechanneling though. We all know healthcare is a shitshow in this country. Brooklyn Community Acupuncture really gives me hope and makes me feel good about my health. I highly recommend Michael, but I know that all of the other practioners come highly recommended as well. Do it! More...

It started off for my wrist following a yoga injury that was not healing using western medicine and after a couple of visits I really embraced the "total body/mind" mission of BAP. Even though it is in a group setting no one is looking at you. Everyone is way too involved in their own healing and meditation process to care about what's going on in your direction. I've worked with a couple of the practitioners and I think I will keep up the variety. Each one has a slightly different approach and I find that only adds to the "total body" healing process. The sliding pay scale is only another amazing part of this whole process. Healing my body and mind should not force me to sell my soul. I've only felt welcomed there, never rushed. And the online booking system could not be easier. I've already recommended this place to a bunch of friends. I'm really impressed with their professionalism and approach to holistic healing for the moderate income Brooklyn-ite. It's extremely clean and the staff is nothing but friendly and soothing in their approach. Oh, and the needles don't hurt one bit! More...

Beautiful Space. Master practitioners. Affordable. Results. My passion for this place and the honor involved in them making it accessible to those of us with limited income renders me SO grateful it's hard to put into a review how deeply moved I am by what B. A.P does for its community. I have successfully convinced many friends, otherwise trepidatious about needles and acupuncture as a whole, to give it a try. It is ridiculously exciting to see the shift in psychical and mental health that takes place after a few treatments. Rachel and Sarah Chase are particularly incredible. If you're thinking about trying acupuncture, stop making excuses and try BAP- it doesn't hurt, and it IS affordable (!!!). More...

BAP takes community acupuncture to a whole new level. The facility is clean and spacious, featuring both tables and chairs in two separate rooms, along with a separate reception area and seating area. The only practitioner I've worked with is Sarah Chase, and she has been outstanding -- I genuinely believe her only concern is the treatment of my acute pain. Payment for services is on an income sliding scale, appointments are easy to book, and I've never felt rushed out for the next appointment (in fact, I've been shocked at the time Sarah has let me stay on the table receiving various acupuncture, electrostatic and cupping treatments), and Sarah takes the time after the treatment to explain the methods used and how they are helping to manage my condition. I couldn't be happier. More...
