Q&As

I love working with people to help them find the connection and security they long for in their closest relationships. And I love that for the rest of my life, I can continue to learn and grow as a therapist – that will never stop. That’s one of the things I love about this work – there is always more to learn and understand - because when people come for help, they deserve a therapist who can understand what they are going through, and help them break out of that stuck place.

Before my children were born, I earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and taught linguistics at UC San Diego and UC Irvine. I stopped working and stayed home with my children when they were very young, and then I started working part time when they got into school. When my youngest child was a senior in high school, and I had been divorced for a few years, I began to look for a career that would be meaningful and challenging. I had always been interested in psychology, relationship issues, and counseling and self-help approaches. Also, my son was enrolled that year in a dual-diagnosis outpatient program that included sessions in which counselors worked with one parent and teen while other parents and teens observed and participated. Many times I felt happy that my communication skills, as well as my insight regarding the emotions involved, allowed me to offer something of value to others in the group. One of the counselors there particularly remarked on my abilities and encouraged me to work in the field. So I began learning about couples therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy while pursuing my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at California State University, Fullerton. After a lot of additional training and supervision, I earned a Certification from the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy as an EFT Couples Therapist. I also plan to get certified as a supervisor in EFT, to help other therapists grow in their work with relationships.
