We found them by accident, but it must have been fate! The beef bowl was flavorful and filling. The beans were amazing and my wife is going to start trying to come close to that flavor because they set a new standard for green beans. The meat was tender and had the tell tale tastes of Ethiopian food. The lentils we're good and filling. My only wish is that they put the ingera on top of the food instead of under it. Had to eat it with a fork instead of mushing the food into the tasty bread. More...

Back in 2014 I went to New Jersey and New York for a Memorial Day weekend. My friends took me to an Ethiopian restaurant, and that was my very first experience with that spicy cuisine. San Antonio's growing food scene was blessed with Berbere Ethiopian Cuisine. Feeling nostalgic for my NYC trip, I stopped by Berbere off Fredericksburg Rd and ordered a plate to go.The food was every bit as delicious as its counterpart in New Jersey, and the warm spices filled my very soul. And for the prices? The meal is very much well worth it. More...

I haven't seen much Ethiopian cuisine since I left my brief stint in Chicago, but Berbere not only satisfied my palette, it's got a prime location for the truck on the N. St. Mary's strip, near my apartment. There's also a brick and mortar store on Fredericksburg Rd. I had the Meat (chicken) & Veggie Combo for around $9. The Injera bread has a light, springiness to it, with a lightly tangy taste. It complements the meat and seasoning nicely.Like the other food trucks along the strip, there's no seating available. That's not their fault - it's a city ordinance issue. The man working the truck was nice, and more than happy to make recommendations. If you're on the strip and looking for something a little new, stop by this truck and give it a go! More...

The red lentils are spicy and possibly my favorite menu item. That said- I’ve never had a “bad” dish there. Embrace your inner adventurer and give them a try. I love good Ethiopian food, but it is so hard to find. Berere solves this problem for me without a doubt! I cannot rave about my meal here enough. We stumbled upon Berere when we went to Alamo Street Eat Park, and I am so glad we did.I had the lamb plate with split peas and steamed cabbage. It was delicious. The only complain I could possibly have is that some of the cabbage pieces were a little too big. But even that didn't stop me from cleaning my plate. My boyfriend got the lentils and green beans. I think the best were the lentils and split peas. The lamb was definitely the way to go for the meat. It was spiced perfectly and cooked to perfection. The owner took great care in making our meal and even checked in on us to make sure we liked it. It was a bit of a slow night but I really appreciated the care he put into the meal. This truly is a gem of a place in San Antonio. More...

Is San Antonio getting an Ethiopian scene?! It certainly looks that way. Over off Fredericksburg is getting to be San Antonio's Little Addis Ababa!  This place is wildly exotic- with spicy flavors that make the tongue sing with heat and wild scents. I got the beef special, which had a turmeric based sauce served with lentils, cabbage, and tomatoes. It was wildly exotic- you can't get these flavors anywhere else in San Antonio. The portions were large, and served with the spongy flat bread that you use instead of silverware. The prices were quite reasonable, especially for the portion sizes and the convenience of being able to pull up right next to the food truck. I appreciated the freshness of the food, especially the tomatoes.  The service was fast and friendly. There weren't any places nearby to sit, so I went down to Denman Park, a few miles down the street. It's a good place to take such foreign food. I was surprised to see so much meat on the menu and such large meat portions in the meals. I've had Ethiopian a few times before, and it'd always been vegetarian. As a carnivorous Texan, I appreciated throwing some protein in there. More...

We arrived a little before they opened, having settled on Ethiopian because I didn't want the heaviness of the Indian food my boyfriend craved. They were having trouble with their generator, but the owner apologized and told us how long we might have to wait for our food and offered us a free drink as we waited. 20-25 minutes later, he dished up our orders and again apologized for the wait and explained it's usually around 8 minutes from order to food. I had a Veggie combo with cabbage and green beans [with leftover lentils], and my boyfriend had Lamb tibs with beet salad and collards. I haven't had a lot of Ethiopian food but I found this comparable to the very good Eritrean food I recently had in Atlanta. The injera was more sour than I recall, but I make and like sourdough bread so it wasn't a problem for me. It was also much less apparent with the hot and spicy lentils than the mild (but flavorful and tasty) vegetables. I appreciated the range of choices (heavy to light) and flavors, and fair pricing. As at least one person has mentioned, there's no place nearby to eat. I don't usually expect food trucks to provide places to eat. They are located 1.2 miles from Denham Estate Park, which would be nice place to eat this in daylight hours. Otherwise, I think it keeps pretty well to eat lukewarm or cold. We'll visit again, this was very good. More...

(4.5 starts) I'm Eritrean so I know good habesha food. This is good. The owner is lovely! He was great to my friends and I when we stopped by for the first time. When we got there nearing the end of the day. He ran out of injera (the traditional sour bread) and felt terrible about it. After chatting for a good minute we all ordered. He was gracious enough to give us a discount and free water. For the sake of the inconvenience and the fact that we were Habesha students. ***For the food: I would definitely recommend the lamb, fasolia, and misir. One thing you must know before you order THESE ARE DRY TIBS. I've never had our cultural food like this and can say that it isn't really traditional. The silsi/sauce is usually served with the meat. That's why I would recommend getting the misir. Misir is made out of chickpeas. And I believe the cook adds Berbere to it because when I eat it with the tibs it tastes like the silsi. The fasolia is good. I've had better but still good.  I would not recommend the dorho/chicken. We traditionally serve the chicken leg. Ive never in my life seen cubed chicken for tsebhi/ wot, I was disappointed when I saw it. So if you're habesha don't order the chicken. Price: you can't beat.  Location: on a curb so there isn't anywhere to sit. My friends and I happily say on the curb haha. Overall, this food truck was a blessing to me. It gave me the opportunity to bond over food with my people and I got a taste of home away from home which we don't have here in San Antonio. More...

I had never tried Ethiopian food before, but after driving past this food truck conveniently located at Fredericksburg and 410 it was too tempting not to check out.   The plates consist of a meat (lamb, beef, or chicken) and two sides, or multiple veg sides for the non carnivores.  The chicken had so much flavor with spices mixing with the grill.  For sides I tried the split pea and beet salad.  Both were fresh and delicious.   Plates are served with choice of fresh bread.  The traditional bread is spongy and a bit sour.  It goes really well with the lentils.  They also have fresh pita.  Plates are around  $9 and they have applepay for credit/debit.  No areas to sit and enjoy so plan on taking it home or to a park.
