Unbelievable chicken. Get the plantains extra well done and thank me later. I don't know how anyone could get past the chicken to the rest of the menu, but if you like chicken, you gotta go. Great service too!

not the best part of the valley, but food is excellent.  proved out by the continuous take out business -me being one since I had a long drive to the office.  I got the sausage plate with black beans and yellow rice, with a chicken tamale, all to go.  Wow everything was flavorful, sausages were smoky and well seasoned; the rice and beans super delicious with a meaty note that did well as a compliment to the sausage when combined onto a tortilla (that came with the order).  Tamale was just as tasty, they had ran out of pork so I got the chicken.  I am apprehensive when it comes to ordering chicken since most versions tend to be dry but not this one.  it was very moist and packed with flavor.  I needed to drive back to the OC so I took a quick bite of everything while it was hot so in comparison to minute one to an hour later, not much of the taste was lost due to the fresh and well prepared ingredients.  Probably why their take out business does so well. The name fits this place like a glove... "Ay papi que Rico" = "oh Sooo good!! We've been here at least 10x since discovering this place 4 months ago while passing by, the incredible smell of the BBQ cooking in back lured us in. .. Literally pulled a u turn to try it out. Pretty much regulars now we truly appreciate the food first and the service just as much. Shredded beef is to die for and haven't had anything less than amazing here. This is EASILY the best place in town!I work nearby and eat lunch at Ay Papa Que Rico a few times a week.  I've never had a bad meal here.  Hands down the best breakfast burrito in SoCal (served all day) and the Guava and Cheese pastries (dare I say) rival Porto's.  Rain or shine, Layz provides awesome service with a smile and you always get your money's worth.UPDATE:  not sure what's been going on with this place.  The food is still great, but I stopped ordering the Breakfast Burrito a while ago (which used to be my favorite thing on the menu) For some reason they started making it with the eggs sunny side up.  When I request scrambled they don't do it.  Runny breakfast burritos are no bueno.  Today I went and the coke zero tasted like seltzer water.  I asked them to check the syrup and a few minutes later they gave me the same seltzery cola. Hot delicious seasoned chicken slowly grilled- wafting through the nearby area with an aroma you cannot resist. I discovered this restaurant when I moved to the area; my first experience was Aug 10 th and if I had written the review on that day it would have been bad based on the service that was provided to me by the lady at the counter.  But I tasted that chicken and I've been back several times since-WHY?-  the chicken was that good.... Yes I love the chicken so much that I will take abuse from an insecure hater behind the counter just to have the chicken in my mouth! If you are a remotely decent looking woman walking in here for a plate of food please beware of the hater woman behinds the counter who is unfriendly and jealous. If you spot her and feel that hater vibe- My advice to you is walk on by her to your right and order from the other counter where you will have friendly service with a smile and have your delicious chicken  all at the same time. This is one of those lowkey spots you don't really notice until you smell the wonderful aroma of charbroiled chicken in the air. Once enter, you are taken into another world. From the decor to the outdoor/indoor vibe. It's been quite some time that I have had the pleasure of being surrounded by such out of this world customer service. Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!! Everything in this menu is bomb!! We had a feast!! Being from Miami, I've been looking for a good chicken spot and I'm glad I found it! ! The chicken, the yucas, the pupusas!!!! Everything here is just so delicious!!! I really like this place, the half chicken plate is really good. Comes with a side of white or yellow rice, black or pinto beans and tortillas. It is wood grilled chicken and is really delicious. Best breakfast burrito around! Have also enjoyed the 19.99 chicken meal with rice and beans sides. Much better than pollo loco. The sandwiches are good as well. Oh and one day we had to wait a bit for our food but they offered us a chicken quesadilla and it was soo good! I didn't even know I liked chicken quesadillas! There is a large tiled and covered patio with plenty of tables; several AC units and ceiling fans keeping it mostly cool. Pupusas are not on the menu but we saw a sign on the wall in the patio advertising them. I asked but was told they did not have them that day (Wednesday). today I remembered to ask again and they had several varieties to choose from 2.95 each, so we got a few and liked all of them. Came with plenty of salsa and zesty cabbage like toppings. One time we ordered online and when we went to pickup they had somehow not gotten the order. Have come here three times in the past week because I like it so much. All the food we have gotten, from BBQ chicken, black and pinto beans, rice, Cuban sandwiches, tostones, platanos, chicken quesadilla, and amazing breakfast burrito (the one with the tater-tots) has been delicious.  There are still large parts of the menu we haven't explored yet - ribs, burgers and lots of appetizers.  The chicken, in particular, is their specialty and it is perfectly cooked with a delicious mesquite flavor.The breakfast burrito, served all day as it should be, is large enough for two people, and filled with fried eggs, bacon, cheese and tater tots, which are the perfect way to add potato to a breakfast burrito. The best breakfast burrito I've had in Sun Valley.The location is awkward and there is generally not enough parking, especially later in the day. I've had a few long waits here, but happy to wait, because the food is so awesome.  The staff has always been super friendly and has offered free items during especially long waits.I do wish the menus (especially the takeout and online menus) were kept up to date. I've been going to Ay Papa Que Rico for years with my family. Started off in the Van Nuys location and we were thrilled when the Sun Valley location opened! The chicken is always juicy. Wow!! That's all I can say because I'm speechless about this place. Went in for the first time today and I already felt like I was at home. Joe, the manager, was very polite and welcoming and encouraged us to try the chicken, which did not disappoint. I could taste the flavor of the grill from the chicken along with the seasoning, which was to die for. Probably the best chicken I've had in town. We also had the chicken sandwich and the pork pupusas which were delicious, especially with the toppings. Also, all the workers there were very nice and treated us well. Where do I start  Was looking to grab a quick bite and stumbled onto this place, only after a friend had mentioned this place to me about having great Cuban food.  Well that was an understatement!My husband and I ordered the chicken, rice and both beans, black & Mexican style with the plantains and everything was incredible!  But the CHICKEN!!  WOW!  It is by far the best chicken I have ever had in my entire life.  It was well seasoned, juicy and cooked to perfection!  It is grilled over mesquite and whoever it the BBQ Master has it down to a science.  I practically ate the bones and that is no exaggeration.  My husband identified the chicken as MAGICAL and it really was.  The rice was perfect and both beans were on point!  The plantains were absolutely delicious!  I will be using this place for my next BBQ and Catering party! Since we can not comment on other people's reviews, we should be able especially when their review is way off and uninformed, I have to use this opportunity to take issue with a reviewer who called Van Nuys a food desert! How insulting to the people that live here and eat here what a horrible thing to say. It's one thing to say hey I didn't like the food and this is why but to insult an entire community and the people in it is another thing entirely! I've lived in Van Nuys for over twenty years and there is a massive variety of great restaurants and shops to chose from. It's far from a Food Desert! So sorry you had to drive all this way to a rough neighborhood" , really Cause u happen to see a few Latina people passing by  ? Jesus man. I'm a white guy and I've been to every type of Latina restaurant in Van Nuys including this one and I have never ever had bad service and rarely bad food. I have actually considered myself lucky to live here and be able to try out so many different types of Mexican food from different regions , food from El Salvador, Guadalajara, etc etc. plus Asian food, Columbian food and on and on.I've learned to spot a good Torta Taco, Etc and gotten to know the different types of Mole that are officered , fish , etc. And I've walked all around Van Nuys with my wife and young son and never felt I was in a rough neighborhood that person who wrote that review should just stay in her area and never venture out of it never try anything new except her hipster approved restaurants l.
