I'm really between a 3 and a 4 on this one and wish I could do 3.5 stars.  It's the only gym in Santa Cruz county that has indoor basketball, racquetball, a swimming pool in addition to workout center, Pilates classes and other workout classes.  The kickboxing class by Amy, the spin by Rick and bootcamp by Judy are what people would typically pay $30 a class for.  The facilities could use some work though...things are broken, bathrooms are usually pretty dirty but then again memberships are super reasonable at less than $100 a month.  Pool access at Simpkins per visit is around $10/each and no hot tub or towels so a good comparison! I love this gym! It's clean, has a friendly staff and isn't pretentious. I have been a member at a couple other gyms around town, toadal and 24 hour fitness and this gym is BY FAR the cleanest and friendliest. I don't mind paying a little more a month for better facilities. They also don't make you sign your life away in a scary contract. Hooray! Whenever I go it feels like a spa day. I go for a run, lift weights, rinse off, take a swim under the redwoods then hang out in the sauna. It's also primarily older folks that go here so you rarely see the meatheads or gym bunnies in their sports bras and short shorts. Phew! My only complaint is with the Zumba class. I love Zumba and have taken it for years and the lady that teaches it with her daughter, who cannot be older than 15 by the way,are honestly not doing that great of a job. They don't explain what they are doing and the steps feel heavily hip hop inspired and it doesn't really feel anything likeZumba. They also play they same songs every class that you can tell the daughter picked... I like some pop music and obviously going to a Zumba class you're going to hear some but there are pop songs that even most radio stations don't want to play. The last time that I went one of the other ladies taking the class mentioned that it'd be great to hear songs that maybe we would know so we could anticipate the beat and also to have a little more fun! I totally agree. I just think they should find a new Zumba teacher or maybe ask that the daughter not be teaching entirely. Her age and lack of teaching experience really show and it honestly has deterred me from taking the class since. More...

Pretty clean, the men's locker room could be cleaner.  The big problem that I have is the AC. You really need to get a new AC.  Please don't tell me the place is too big. This is actually the smallest gym that I have ever belonged to , so it's not the size of the gym. I've only been a member of two other gyms both owned by the 24 hour franchise. One in Sacramento and the other in Campbell and I can say Active is the right gym for me. I try to be here at least 4x a week with the intent of keeping up my health and appearance as the mid-forties try to take their toll. For the most part I'm very happy with equipment, staff and facilities in general. There are a few small maintenance issues here and there but not enough to change my good opinion. I'm using a personal trainer for the first time and they are knowledgable and professional. For me it has all that I want from a gym. More...

This gym is really convenient, it's only 3 min from my house, which beats driving to IN-shape at 4:45 in the morning. It has a basket ball court, racquet ball court, lap pool and hot tub outside. Decent deletion of equipment and free weights, some of it seems dated but it still works. The water fountains are great because they have an additional spout to fill up your water bottle. Little things that add convenience add stars! Men's locker room is large with plenty of showers (some are private), steam room, sauna, and lockers. If I could change a few things, I would update the the tile in the showers and steam room in both the men's and women's locker room, as they are probably both outdated. A large dark grey slate tile, something with less grout. Also, in the men's steam room at least, the benches have a long run to the wall, either shorten the bench or add a few feet of slope to the wall for some back support. The sauna in the men's room could use some new wood as its getting warped is some spots. Some new counter tops would be fantastic too. Maybe play some relaxing music through out- the website says you won't want to leave, but honestly it pretty similar in cleanliness as the 24 hour and In-Shape, and I don't feel like lingering, not that I would anyways. I realize these changes are unlikely, but I can dream. Also, not that the gym can do anything about this, but when did it become okay for a guy to come into the steam room and shave?!!! I'm sorry but that's gross, we are in there to relax, not to listen to a razor scratch away the stubble on your face or whatever else you decide to shave and the tap of your clogged razor blade on the bench. Please do this at the sink. I don't care what the hot moist air does for your skin while you shave, it's inconsiderate to everyone else. Would be nice if it opened at 5:00am and closed at 10pm.Overall it's convenient and does the job. More...

Been going to this gym for bloody years now so here's the lowdown:Good:=====1) Towel service included - wonderful2) Gym small but mostly fully stocked (except for only one power rack though which is rubbish)3) Personal trainers are nice enough except one who yawns continually while she's training people. 4) Friendly clientele although I mostly don't want to talk to anyone so just wear my headphones.  Basically no trashy people come here.5) Nice pool but unless you're a lane swimmer then you're out of luck.6) Extremely clean facilities.  Cleanest I have ever been to in fact.Bad:===1) Opening hours are so pathetic that if you are serious about working out you have to have another backup membership for when this place is closed.2) Once you outgrow the equipment you are left wanting more.  They probably won't be putting any new stuff in either.3) Too many steps up to the gym so after training legs it can take 10 minutes to leave the building. Not their fault though really!4) So much wasted space in the building to expand the gym but I suspect they don't have enough members to make it worthwhile.5) During the day there's hardly anybody there making it depressing.6) Gym isn't worth the price if it is all that you use like me.7) A/C is abysmal.  Cold in winter, too hot in summer.  I asked them for replacement fans and it took about six months to get one installed.  I was thinking more like four of them rather than one but whatever.Well that's it for now, I will update if I think of anything. This gym is awesome. First of all, its tucked away in the mountains and the property is beautiful. You walk through some tennis courts, by some ponds with fountains and make your way up the stairs to the entrance. By the time I enter the building I am so relaxed just by the surroundings.I originally joined this gym to train for a triathlon last year. I needed a pool to swim in. The pool at club one is wonderful. First of all with the beautiful surroundings swimming in their pool is downright meditative. On the plus side it is always super clean and everyone is very accommodating with sharing lanes. In the club there are also some amazing trainers. I did a package with Danyelle and she was super knowledgable and professional. The equipment is always clean and it is nothing of a scene if you know what I mean. What I really like is how proactive this gym is. They are constantly issuing challenges to their members..like 30 pushups a day for a month, a squat challenge. Right now I am doing the 8 week challenge and it is awesome. I haven't had a problem with finding a machine. They have TVs so who doesn't like to work out while watching TV (please ignore me if I start crying... I'm probably watching a Disney movie). I also enjoy working out with my trainer. If I could, I would do it more often. The weight area can get a little crowded, but again, never had problem finding space. It's nice because sometimes other trainers are walking around and give you helpful tips to make your work out better.I have also tried a few classes. All of the instructors are very nice and most of them introduce themselves to you if you are a first timer, which just makes you feel good. I had one instructor remember me after one class and then I had an instructor introduce themself twice (which is kind of my pet peeve. Also, I am the ONLY Asian in the class soo....). It's been six months since I joined Club One, and I've been going pretty regularly, so I figure I've had enough time to form an educated opinion.  I'm not an athlete.  In fact, I'm a desk jockey.  Though I'm by no means an expert, I have tried just about every machine in the place, and I suspect I might have been using some of them backwards.  Oops.  Here's my take:   Pros: 1) Location - I love that it's near a bit of nature, and I NEVER have a problem parking. 2) Classes - I've only attended a few, but have always felt welcome, and respected by the teachers.   3) Amenities - Hooray for all the towels/soap/moisturizer I could ever want! It is SO convenient to have these things available after a workout. 4) Machines - There are always available machines, even when the place is crowded.  Yeah, there are that many.Cons:1) The Women's changing room is ridiculously small.  Changing in front of strangers is awkward enough without having to pretend you're not inches from another person's butt.2) On many occasions, I've tripped over ill-behaved children in the changing room.  I understand this is something I can't change because I'm sure a large portion of Club One's revenue comes from the swim classes for kids.  But know this: there will occasionally be kids in the locker room pulling down towels, shrieking, running, and not being observed by parents in spite of the posted signs requesting this.  *sigh*Well that's it.  See you at the gym.  I'll be the one on the rowing machine singing sea chanties to myself. I was a little peeved because it isn't printed ANYWHERE and the fees are clearly listed online, so I felt like they should honor their promotion with the normal registration fee since it's not clear or even listed anywhere that its different. They are also quite expensive, their cheapest monthly membership is $60 a month, so compared to 24 hours $19.99 a month deals, it's really pricey...So far I love the club, it's clean, no meat market feel like 24 hour which I used to go to.
