Q&As

Goals are the foundation to any long term sustained results. Whether you are starting from scratch or are a seasoned veteran, goal setting is a crucial process to success. When goal setting, I like to stick with utilizing the SMART principle as an overall guide, with my own touches as well, because it is such a great way to ensure your clients overall success as well as your success as a great, professional, effective, adaptable, well-educated, fully equipped and results oriented PT.

What does the SMART mean for me as a CPT:
**Here's how the acronym applies, literally broken down by each letter which directly corrects to the process behind personal trainers job of making goals become reality and doing their job to the best of their ability which inenvitably results in clients yielding results they had wished for, asked for, and attained if not exceeded:

S: Specific. A way to make your goal Specific, be as detailed as possible.
-For example: You'd want to set a target weight/target weight loss (i.e. to lose 10 lbs, or get down to 12% body fat, to lose 'x' amount of inches, or to have their 'idea' hip/waist ratio as well as any other ratio involving inches rather it's to lose it in certain areas of the body vs. gain inches in other areas essentially depending on the body type or shape that is desired to be the end goal).

M: Measurable. Once you have set your goal you want to make sure that your goal is Measurable. Again the goal of losing weight can be measured by a tearget weight drop (10kgs) or a final target (65kgs body weight). both of these can be measured on a weight scale.

A: Attainable. Based on your lifestyle, certain goals may take longer than others. This step in the SMART process allows us to analyze and decide whether our goal is realistic and achievable.
*We must take all outside factors into account; including work and family commitments and social events, to determine whether our goal is attainable. This is important because if a goal seems as though it's unachievable, this can adversely affect a person's intrinsic motivation.

R: Relevant. Is your goal relevant to what you are trying to achieve? Relating to the goal above, it is imperative that the goal(s) set to be attained are, in fact, relevant to what the client wants to achieve.
~ For example, if someone wanted to lose weight they wouldn't set the goal of learning to start off by making their goal to be to do a full split; off the bat, at least ;)

T: Timing.
*By setting a target date to achieve your goal by, an individual is able to implement a process that will allow them to achieve their goal or review it if need be.
=For example, "I want to lose 10lbs by the start of summer" instead of "I want to lose 10lb". This seemingly small change of working actually provides a time frame that allows the potential to reset a goal if it will not or is not able to be achieved within the given time frame. Resetting a goal, if it is not going to be achieved by the initial set date, can maintain an individual's motivation and increase potential of achieving their goal rather than have them think of themselves as failures, or feel defeated and want to quit instead of keep trying.

In conclusion, implementing the SMART process when goal setting is fundamental to success as it ensures the goal is set with tangible parameters.

By linking motivation to change to a person’s perceived sense of self identity, the healthy focus for change can become merged with their sense of who they are – and this is what makes it motivating.

goal setting needs to be:
positively orientated
specific (and if necessary broken down into manageable steps)
compelling (remember the sizzle!)
made more compelling through maximising curiosity.

Motivation. Dedication. Willingness. Consistency. Perseverance. Inner-strength. Focus. Willpower. Passion.

I do what I love so it's been easy to find many ways to say how or why I love what I do. Helping people is a passion of mine. I get intrinsic value, which far outweighs any monetary compensation for my services, seeing people evolve and reach their full potential; growing as a person from the inside out and accomplishing things they never thought possible.

My:
-Knowledge/Expertise – This is (hopefully) the main reason people hire a coach or trainer. The person your'e hiring needs to have a high level of expertise with the given subject, and I use that knowledge to be the best and most beneficial toward my client. In the case of training, you’ll get in better shape, and learn something. So, while I show and tell you each and every thing we do, it is so that the whole experience transcends just a typical workout that will fade away; but more of a lasting, overall growth that has both a learning and then a teaching yourself aspect so that you can attain what you set out for (your goals) and perhaps plan/set out for the next challenge!

Extrinsic Motivation – Simply, people work harder and perform better when someone else is helping them. Coaches in particular have this effect because they are actively pushing you to reach within yourself for more. The combination of motivation and intensity always leads to greater progress and better results.

Accountability – By FAR, this is the greatest benefit of training, coaching, teaching, and instructing. If you know someone is counting on you, you show up. Both physically, and metaphorically. Hiring a coach gives you multiple types of accountability. Let’s look at fitness coaching—if you hire a trainer, you’re paying for it and therefore a LOT more likely to work hard, a lot LESS likely to skip workouts, and in general more prone to taking your program seriously. As for non-financial accountability, the simple fact that someone is investing time in your success obligates you (emotionally) to strive to perform and achieve. We’re people pleasers, and when we place people in a position of authority (trainer) we are hard-wired to want to please them even more.

Anyone who’s ever played a sport knows how much it hurts to think you’ve let your coach down. This translates into training, business coaching, therapy, or nearly anything else. Knowing we have to report our actions, and those actions are being examined, and to some extent, evaluated makes us want to be on our best behavior at all times. It’s no surprise that the mere act of hiring a coach often spurs people to new heights of success.

Love and Friendship – This happens later in a coaching relationship. I can tell you as both a coach and a client, if you invest in someone emotionally, and they invest in you, and you’re both working towards mutual success, it’s impossible not to grow closer. Your goals are their goals, and so their successes become your successes. Caring for each other enhances both motivation and accountability. I truly care about each and every one of my client and members I encounter and/or train every day..

You should choose me because I love what i do and do what I do and I believe it shows through and through and I look forward to helping anyone and everyone who wants to change their life for the better and look + feel their best. When someone loves what they do, they do it for YOU and truly care and I want you to know that each and every client holds a special place in my heart. You may not love me during the workout but after all I've heard are thanks and smiles (though the pants and sweat). But that noise and perspiration were the dedication that a motivated, driven, and goal-oriented trainer like myself are physical proof of the old you escaping your body making way for a new, better you- the you you thought you'd never be or use to be. Anyone can do it... I'm here to make it happen.
