I first met Dawn two days postpartum in the hospital when she photographed my daughter and our family. We were hesitant about taking photos, but there was something about Dawn, and a realness about her that changed our mind. The loving and gentle way that she cared for Sloan (then two days old), and sensitivity she possessed in guiding us through each shot and moment, that were apparent from the first "smile!". When we saw the photos for the first time (which was one to two days later - like lighting!!), we were in tears. It was utterly human, utterly beautiful, and simply perfect. I met Dawn for the second time in a women's professional networking group where she was the lead photographer. Camera around the neck, she moved around the room like a silent cat, capturing the highlights of the meeting and never forcing anything. I was thrilled to chat with her and asked her to come and take photos at an event that my organization was putting on - a fashion and fun event benefitting homeless families. She didn't even bat an eyelash, and said yes immediately. Her photos of that event, the light, the laughter, the fashion - it was better than most New York fashion week shoots I had ever seen. From there, I went on to have Dawn photograph families and moms in their transition from homelessness. She was always there when I called, and each time she captured the strength and humanity in each face and story. She focuses on the best in each person she meets, and is a story teller through her lens. This year, I had Dawn come and do a follow-up shoot with my family around my daughter's third birthday. It was a quick shoot and an even quicker turn around - she squeezed me in within a few days notice. As always she got me back the photos within days (not weeks like some photographers) and they were outstanding. She is an amazing humanitarian, artist, professional and woman.
