Through a process of non-judgemental guided self-reflection, Jonathan aims to better equip you to tackle life’s challenges. Building on your strengths and achievements—some of which you may not have recognised—he will guide you towards greater success and fulfilment. His objective is for you to become more confident in making lasting change for yourself, your relationships, and your life. Working in as culturally diverse city as Auckland, Jonathan has extensive experience with many ethnic cultures. He works with all ages from adolescents upwards, including individuals, couples, and families. Jonathan has applied he expertise to wide variety of issues, including among others: anxiety, depression, and stress; relationships, conflict, and infidelity; abuse and trauma; sex, sexuality, and gender identity; management of emotions; life-changes, loss, and grief; substance addictions and health-management; dating, work-life balance, and parenting; career-development, redundancy, and retirement. He also provides professional supervision to therapists, and executive coaching on issues of leadership styles, strategic decision-making, and governance. What distinguishes his counselling practice is his emphasis on helping clients find workable solutions that better connects them first to themselves—their true nature—and so to others, and life in general. He encourages clients to set goals, use sound reasoning, adopt new habits, and measure progress. Clients discover their motivation for change and add new tools to their catalogue of life-skills. Depending on clients’ circumstances and needs from fixing a distinct issue to changing personality traits, Jonathan employs a repertoire of techniques, which is ever expanding through continuing professional development: Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive and Dialectical Behaviour Therapies, Solution Focussed Brief Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, Developmental Couple Therapy, Systemic Family Therapy, and so on—all designed to equip clients in managing life’s challenges. While most clients successfully achieve their goals and nearly all make significant progress, this cannot be guaranteed. A counsellor since 2015, Jonathan is an NZAC Registered Counsellor with an MBA (London Business School), BSc(hons) (Social Studies), and a Diploma in Counselling, with over 20 years experience in senior positions in both the private and public sectors. Appointments are available at his Takapuna office during the week from 9.00am to 6.00pm, and on Saturday mornings. Online sessions are also available. His professional fee is currently $175 per 50-minute session. A $87.50 non-refundable deposit for the first session is payable in advance, otherwise fees are charged at the time of the appointment. Most major credit cards are accepted through PayPal. If the session cannot be filled from the waiting-list, half the full fee is payable for any cancellation within one working day of the scheduled appointment.

What do you love most about your job?

It's the changes clients report - and I see - in their lives. When they've broken behaviour patterns and often beliefs, which can go back several generations, so they see and interact with life in a more fulfilling way. This is what drives me; without this hope, counsellors burn out.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Before counselling I had my own business in management consultancy, helping firms raise capital. Since becoming a counsellor, I've practiced in several charitable organisations, such as North Harbour Living Without Violence, Home & Family Counselling, and the Citizens Advice Bureau. While they provide good services, they exist under constant financial uncertainty providing short-term solutions at minumum cost.

Why should our clients choose you?

Clients should have confidence in any registered counsellor. I, along with all my colleagues meet audited competency stanards and are regularly clinically supervised. Yet, at the same time, we're all unique.

I'm not a devotee of any one of the many psychotherapy modalities. Instead I use whatever technique is applicable to the client, the issue, and the circumstances. Coming from a management background, I use goals and scaling to measure progress. Counselling for me is not an open-ended process but one controlled by the client with the guidance of the counsellor.
