The Tron has craftily repurposed its old Dumbstruck set as the perfect backdrop to The Scotch Alchemist: adapted from the original by Sir William of Shakespeare’s BFF. Whilst her boss is away my VERY GOOD FRIEND the #ActuallyQuiteGlamourousButAlwaysCastAsACleaner Louise McCartney sets about grafting to make some fast cash in an era of payday loans and 50s wallpaper. Playing a plethora of costumed characters, she is up and down and up and down them treads like a teenager with good hips! McCarthy is a masterclass in Jacobean farce. Each of her grafting roles is beautifully observed and her delivery of Gary McNair’s updated Scotch bants is post-punk poetry. Over faithfulness to some dullard original plodding plotting hampers the scip adaptation which is, at its best, both brilliant and gallus describing Epicure’s coupon as a ‘smiley face drawn on a Johnnie bag full of custard’. 20 mins of cuts to Act One would chunder this one along nicely. Holes of dull are disallowed from wallowing though as director Andy Arnold skilfully deploys McCarthy to pump things up towards the glorious and terrible denouement. The supporting cast are supportive, and Davie Shea’s lighting design is consistently serviceable and oftentimes enhancing. MOST EXCELLENT! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ More...

The initial table offered was outside the rehearsal area and very noisy so we were able to find a quieter spot that suited us better. Good food, nice people, casual but efficient atmosphere. Remember December is just fab.... the best Christmas play we've seen yet. All 3 children (aged 4, 4 and 1) were totally engaged from the start. The 2 cast members were brilliant, very clear, funny and larger than life. The set was beautifully made and kept the story going... we really felt like we were accompanying Flora on her journey to the North Pole. Thank you to all the lovely staff who helped sort out the buggy parking and were so kind when speaking to the children. All in all, a great pre-Christmas treat that we all enjoyed and will remember.... thank you, can't wait for next year's play! More...
