About

After 15 years with a large, international architecture practice, I began doing some private work in 2008 (as Three Percent Design), assisting a London focused residential developer (I still work with them today!) with designs, specifications, finishing packages and co-ordination services for a multi-unit build in London.

Tommy was extremely helpful and communicative. We had just moved to a new house and he was full of great advice, based on similar properties he had worked on. He really encouraged us to take our time when considering making changes to the house and live in it, considering light and different seasons. This was really good advice and was great to not feel pressured to move too quickly. He sent us lots of useful information and similar properties for inspiration. We will definitely be in touch with him in the future! More...

Q&As

I generally work around the principle that most people, somewhere inside them, have an idea of what they’d like to achieve but they’re either not quite sure how to get there, or there’s a bit of a lack of confidence in doing so. I often act as bit of a conduit, piecing together a scheme or a design based around whatever knowledge or inspiration I can gain from a client, design team or workshop. This kind of collaborative approach is a much nicer process than me walking in and saying ‘I think you should do this, knock down these walls, use this colour, put down that flooring' etc., but I'm equally comfortable leading the conversation and challenging ideas and perceptions.

I've catered for everything over the years, from minimalist, contemporary schemes to sensitive, listed property refurbishments, with plenty of examples of dovetailing period and contemporary aesthetics together.

The opportunity to help people. Whether it's residential, commercial, healthcare, or any other disciplines, the most rewarding aspect is always being able to turn peoples aspirations into something tangible.

It sounds like a really naff cliché but it was just a case of it being the right time. I felt that I could do more, believed I could do what I was doing better, and wanted to be more accountable. I couldn’t achieve that as part of a large studio so that's where Three% came from.

A big part of the process is ensuring that a client is comfortable with the process and with me. Every project is different, each client has their own nuanced needs and aspirations, so the challenge for me is to be open and adaptable and be comfortable knowing that it's not possible to be the perfect fit for every opportunity.

Post-Covid has changed a lot of peoples/organisations perceptions about remote and in-person services. It always depends on the circumstances and what the project entails but I've delivered numerous projects, some of a significant commercial scale, without ever meeting a client in person or visiting site. That's not always possible and wouldn't always lead to the optimum outcome but, depending on the deliverables, it can be very efficient.

Whilst post-pandemic measures have eased over the last couple of years, the ability to work efficiently and effectively remotely, either fully or in-part, has allowed me to be very flexible and sensitive to any specific requirements.
