As I work in the city I often call into the centre for lunch. The food in The Picnic Basket is amazing and the staff are really friendly and helpful. There isn't much space to sit in as it is more a sandwich bar, but there are plenty of seats around Durham to sit and eat at (I recommend down by the riverbank towards the cricket fields on a sunny day). After working here for many years I can safely say that The Picnic Basket is definitely one of Durham's go-to's I can highly recommend for a bite at breakfast or lunch time. More...

We sometimes have a Friday treat at work and get breakfast sarnies. They are great value and very tasty. Don't know whether this happens just on Fridays but we got free tea/coffee, bottle of water, crisps and biccy! !! Poor Becky couldn't carry them all up the hill and i had to run down to help her More...

The Picnic Basket recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and is a popular , friendly place that makes a variety of sanwiches on the spot and which also prepares baked potatoes and serve a variety of cakes. Fabulous hot rolls including bacon and egg or mixed grill. There is window seating for about five. Highly recommended for those looking for a bready snack. More...

I love this cafe; it's always a joy to walk in as the staff are always friendly and the atmosphere resembles that of a friendly meet-and-greet. I have to admit to having been a bit surprised when I first walked in; an entire wall dedicated to sandwich combinations with a panel dedicated to jacket potatoes and another smaller one for miscellaneous cafe goods. What was this!?However, after noting they served peanut butter and banana sandwiches, I was quickly converted; not many establishments feel the peanut butter is worth serving and it's nice to see a change. Their sandwiches are amazing. The proportions are perfect in both sweet and savory, you'll never get that irritating last bite of bread (speaking of which, they have a large selection to choose from) and everything is customizable. If they don't have an ingredient in, they'll offer a substitute instead of flat-out refusing to make the sandwich like other certain places. Of course, with the wide range of sandwich combinations it's easy enough to choose another at a moments notice.Clean, friendly, delicious and inexpensive; what's there not to like? More...

What a great discovery on our visit to durham to find the picnic basket, next to our hotel. Everything is fresh, which is hard to find these days, with all the fast food chains. Very friendly and fun staff.
