The County Hotel

Stayed here for a 3 days business trip. Friendly staff, comfortable bed, clean room and a decent shower. Food was also really good and freshly cooked! Would definitely head back!

Not bad hotel for the money paid. I booked a single room and it was fine, comfy bed good shower but again just a small tv in the corner on the well. No tv within hotel so only one to watch. 1 bad Mark was it was cold, no heating in the room, I did try to put it on in the middle of night and when I woke up the windows were streaming with condensation. We took a trip to Abbotsford, and wanted somewhere close by to stay overnight before heading back south. The County Hotel was perfect - just 10 minutes from Abbotsford, with ample car parking. The room was comfortable with a lovely warm radiator, a view of Sir Walter Scott's courtroom, and a cosy bed. The County Hotel is an 18th-Century coaching inn, and frankly it is showing its age. That said, the hotel came into new ownership in 2018 and the new proprietors have been busy with renovations. On the whole, they seem to be doing a good job, although they are still not quite there.||||But while the common parts are still in need of some TLC, I've no complaints about my room. It was bright, clean and comfortable, albeit a little cramped - as was the bathroom. ||||The only problem was the noise from the street below. The hotel is situated on a main road and bus route, and all the bedrooms are at the front of the building, so traffic noise is inevitable. This was especially bad in the evening and early morning, less so in the middle of the night. (I stayed there on a weeknight; it might be different on weekends.)||||The staff I spoke to were invariably friendly and helpful, although I got the impression they were over-worked. It took a long time for me to find someone to book me in on my arrival, and even longer to pay my bill when I was ready to leave. To be fair, I was leaving quite early in the morning when they were probably busy serving breakfast.||||If the new owners manage to brighten up the common parts, this could be a very pleasant hotel. But keep in mind that it is a historic building and so there is a limit to what can be done. For example, I would think it is unlikely they would be able to install a lift, so you might have to climb two floors up a twisty staircase to reach your room. Personally, that doesn't bother me. I would prefer to see them give priority to installing sound-proof double-glazing in the bedrooms. More...

Popped in when visiting on sunny afternoon. It was really warm so we wanted to sit outside. Staff member was really helpful and opened the back doors for us. Outside area needs a tidy up but we had 2 decent chairs and sun so all was good. Ordered the fishcakes, chicken and bacon sandwiches, cheesey chips and a portion of haggis. My hubby had a pint of ipa and i had a soft drink. The coleslaw was lovely with the sandwiches and the side salads fresh. Food was great and very reasonable at just over £20. We were the only people in the outside area or dining room as it seemed like a quiet day in Selkirk but the staff member who served us was great. If in Selkirk I'd go back happily. Very pleasantly surprised by how nice food was given tired/dated appearance of the hotel. Rating higher as based on food and friendliness of staff member. More...

Booking couldnt have been simpler. The receptionist, on my arrival, was very pleasant, informative and efficient. My room was spotless with all the fittings and comforts that you would expect from a good hotel ; doesnt always work like that. A warm welcome upon arrival at this family run hotel. Our late arrival meant we missed out on eating in but were directed to where we could find something to eat, nothing was too much trouble even allowing us to eat our takeaway in the bar so we could have a couple of drinks with it. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent, a good selection of things to choose from. They were having some work done in the morning but not until everybody was up and it did not interfere with enjoying our one night stay but did show us that they are determined to make other areas of the hotel as nice as the rooms. I stayed here for the Common Ride. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The hotel was geared to people doing the ride and I was able to get breakfast at 5:15am. , along with others.
