A Changed DogOur 1 year old Yorkshire Terrier started exhibiting some behavioural issues three months after having major heart surgery when he was just six months of age. He seemed to deal with all the visits to the vets, the procedure and recovery extremely well. Then, he became very jittery, couldn`t settle, was constantly on the go. He would bark at everything on his walks, people, traffic cones etc and especially other dogs. Once he started barking he seemed incapable of switching it off. He also starting guarding toys, hated his crate and disliked walking beside my wheelchair. We tried everything to alter these behaviours. In desperation we contacted Sue Kewley who visited and carried out a thorough assessment of Jago and then devised a programme of Behaviour Therapy. She quickly identified the cause and trigger points for his behaviour. We completed six sessions during which we learned a completely different approach in response to Jago`s behaviour. Sue taught us a variety of strategies and this helped reduce our frustration around the behaviour. By completing the games/exercises throughout each day Jago`s behaviour has gradually improved. He is now much more relaxed, the barking has almost ceased ( apart from when he sees the poor Greyhound in our road, so more work to be done on that one). Our walks are now a pleasure not a battle. The guarding is now extremely rare. He is very happy to go in his crate when it is necessary. In the space of four months he is a completely different dog. He`s happy, relaxed and enjoying life just the way he should. The new approach is now like second nature to us and our training continues.Contacting Sue was the best thing we could have done. She`s brilliant, very down to earth and extremely approachable. We would highly recommend her. More...
