Steve is a great maths tutor. He obviously knows his field and has patience and a good sense of humour which really helps with teenagers! Highly recommend.

Steve has been my tutor helping me to achieve Nat 5 Maths. I have found him to be clear with his explanations and patient with my uptake. I was struggling at school and couldn't understand many aspects of the maths course, however Steve introduced me to new ways of learning and really improved my overall understanding and motivation. My son has just completed 5th year and in all subjects, except Maths, he is an A-grade student. Over the last 2 years my son gradually fell behind, became increasingly frustrated and worried and it became obvious to me that this was affecting his self-esteem. Steve arrived promptly for the first session with an impressive selection of teaching resources and learning support aids and he spent time talking with my son to assess his current competence level before proceeding. He made an instant connection which is not always easy with teenagers and this set the foundation for successful learner engagement. Progress was almost instantaneous. The one-to-one approach clearly allowed Steve to identify key areas of misunderstanding and target these specifically. Steve is not only knowledgeable and experienced, he has the ability to relate to and connect with his students in a way which is productive and meaningful. More...

Steve has been working with my daughter (newly S4) for just over a year now and has helped her improve in maths to the point that she is now averaging over 85% in every school assessment where previously her average was 54%. Steve knows what is expected in schools and SQA exams and explains all the concepts she is learning and makes sure she really understands and then challenges her further. I would and have recommended Steve to friends and family with no hesitation at all. Steve has built a great relationship with our whole family. As a primary school teacher myself I am very impressed with Steve's tutoring skills and knowledge. My daughter did not enjoy maths at all throughout primary and early secondary - thanks to her new found confidence she now tells us this is her favourite subject!! More...

Steve works with my daughter who really struggled with maths throughout primary and early secondary school. Now she achieves an average of over 85% in every school assessment and really enjoys the subject. Steve knows the school curriculum and knows what will be expected of her in future exams. Steve patiently and kindly explains the concepts to her, relates them to real life and makes sure she understands. Steve is polite, friendly and gets on with the whole family. During this transition to home learning Steve has been fantastic and continues to work with us remotely, making sure my daughter is still learning and progressing in maths. I would highly recommend Steve without hesitation. More...

I am a primary school teacher who could not help my daughter understand or like maths to the extent that she was falling behind in the first two years of secondary school. We asked Steve to work with us and through his patient and kind approach she is on track to achieve an A in Nat 5 maths this year. Importantly, she now enjoys maths too. We were very comfortable with Steve tutoring in our home, he gets on with everyone. Now we are home learning Steve has been a great support to my daughter, tutoring online, helping her continue to learn and understand work sent home from school. Steve is flexible and is happy to work around our timetable, which takes a huge pressure off us as a family. I have recommended Steve to friends with primary school aged children and friends with children sitting Higher Maths. Thanks for all your help Steve! More...

My son Sam has just completed 5th year and in all subjects, except Maths, he is an A-grade student. His challenges with Maths are attributable in part to long periods of absence/sick leave by his Maths teacher and the alternative arrangements put in place by his school were wholly unsatisfactory. Over the last 2 years Sam gradually fell behind, became increasingly frustrated and worried and it became obvious to me that this was affecting his self-esteem. I contacted my friends via FaceBook for a Maths Tutor recommendation and this is how I found Steve Garland. He arrived promptly for the first session with an impressive selection of teaching resources and learning support aids and he spent time talking with my son to assess his current competence level before proceeding. He made an instant connection which is not always easy with teenagers and this set the foundation for successful learner engagement. In a few short weeks, there was more progress than the previous 2 years of Maths schooling. The one-to-one approach clearly allowed Steve to identify key areas of misunderstanding and target these specifically. This is what had been lacking at school. In the end my son had stopped asking for any clarification and this further compounded the problem. Steve is not only knowledgeable and experienced, he has the ability to relate to and connect with his students in a way which is productive and meaningful. More...

Steve has an excellent rapport with my 16 year old son and his enthusiasm and practical application for mathematics is motivational. My son’s mathematical abilities have improved immensely throughout the year he has been working with Steve and he has given him the skills and confidence needed to pass his National 5 exam. More...

Steven has been teaching my three children for the last 3 years , one is in primary 2, which Steven is helping immensely with her basic counting and numeracy, my eldest daughter is getting taught fractions.
I love Steven's enthusiasm and attention to detail, he has immense patience with my younger one as she has previously struggled with basic counting and subtraction. With my older two kids he has continued to develop their understanding to a level which is amazing , I'm loving the recent school reports.
I also feel confident that my eldest daughter whom is going to high school in the fall will transition easily into higher education. I can say hand on my heart that there has been an amazing transformation in all my children's learning , in fact they even look forward to doing maths so much.
I would totally recommend Steven as an excellent and very patient tutor, and I shall continue to use his services for many years to come.

Yours sincerely

He is just a wealth of wisdom when it comes to simplifying maths and helping families relate it to daytoday life. The warmth, passion and zeal is clearly seen in how he delivers the subject matter. My family have used his services over the years and he has never disappointed at any point. Good to see him opening his work via the virtual platform as then he can have a wider reach.

Q&As

Tutoring mathematics gives me numerous reasons to love my job. It gives me the opportunity to help our primary, secondary and further education students with varying needs grow and develop on their mathematical journey. By working in collaboration with dedicated teachers, lecturers and senior staff in industry to support our young generation, mature students and professionals; providing a valuable mathematics tuition service is a privilege. This is a profession that I thoroughly enjoy, and is immensely rewarding.

My business started from a desire to turn my favourite subject, lifelong passion and the knowledge gained from my mathematics degree into a valuable teaching service. My own school teachers and lecturers were excellent, and I wanted to have the same opportunities as them to teach, encourage and inspire.

My aim is that potential clients will choose me because of my high success rate with students I have supported since 2004. I strive to make my services friendly and professional. This has helped many students enjoy maths, improve their skills, gain confidence, reach their potential and gain a well deserved maths qualification. Former students have recommended my services based on their positive experience. Some of their testimonials are on the website and yell for your reference.
