My students are a mix of all ages - children as well as adults, many of whom played when they were younger and now are interested in rediscovering their musical abilities. I firmly believe that the mark of a good teacher is the capacity not simply to transfer information and skills, but to develop and instil a love of music and to foster the ability to teach oneself. I know from my own experience that the greatest driver of improvement is not discipline and regimen, though these things are important. The most vital thing is love of music, and to encourage this is the greatest responsibility a teacher has.
Students are often uncertain whether they should be taking exams or not. Each student is different; for some, preparing for an exam can be really motivating and provide a sense of direction, structure and achievement. For others, they can be more hindrance than inspiration and these students prefer to learn without them - I have experience and enjoy teaching with either aim in mind. In any case, together we will be learning how to progress as a musician quickly and efficiently, to play expressively and with confidence and to develop comfortable and fluid technique. Above all, we will be learning to sharpen any musician's most important tool: the ear!
