The frequency with which a home requires a gutter clearance, will vary greatly depending upon its location. Gutters in the presence of nearby deciduous trees, under a moss covered roof, or attractive to nesting birds - will always require more maintenance than a gutter which is in a less impactful position. 

Although there really is no set frequency that can apply to all homes, what we can be certain of, is that if left unattended for long enough, all gutters will inevitably become blocked at some point in time. Blocked gutters will eventually result in more serious consequences to your property (and potentially health), increasing the likelihood of expensive structural repairs being required. As a general rule, having your gutters cleared once or twice a year, will be sufficient.​

The immense suction power of the gutter vacuum, will clear even the most compacted of gutters - removing any debris that hasn’t been able to make its way to your downpipe. It will also ensure that your clearance is mess free, with no dirty water slopping over the side of your gutters.

When left unattended to, your roof tiles can develop a build-up of moss and lichen. Not only does this become extremely unsightly, but it can also have serious consequences to the structural integrity of your home.

Moss absorbs moisture very easily, which not only adds weight to your roof, putting it under stress, but can also result in moisture entering the roof space. Moss grows something known as rhizoids, which basically act as roots. These can find their way under your tiles and force them to warp, shift, or crack. Likewise, moisture that is held by lichen or moss can freeze in cold weather and cause cracks in your roofing, much like potholes that form in roads.

Moss and lichen usually flourish on roofs in rural areas, where trees are nearby and present shady and damp conditions. Steeper pitched roofs are less likely to support moss and lichen growth as they shed water more quickly than roofs with a low pitch.

The good news is, moss and lichen can both be removed. Although a jet wash can produce instantly satisfying results, it can also cause significant damage to your roof tiles. In addition to the risk it presents, on its own, it will not deter the swift return of unwanted organic matter. Rather than risk damaging someones property with the use of a jet wash, at Pane in the Glass, we offer a roof cleaning service that is both safe and effective.
Firstly, we remove 99% of the moss with the use of profiled scrapers. The remaining particles of moss and lichen, are then treated with the application of a wide spectrum biocide. The biocide is made of an ammonium concentrate that kills algae and phototropic life forms within a matter of minutes.

The rate of self cleansing varies with numerous environmental factors: Exposure to rain, type of metabolites etc. However, visual changes will begin after only a few hours, and the appearance of your roof tiles will continue to improve over the following weeks and months. Dark persistent metabolites can take a year to begin fading, but will then disappear within the following six months.

In addition to killing off existing organic matter, the biocide treatment will also deter moss and lichen from returning. Although the duration over which the unwanted matter will return, highly depends on environmental factors - you can expect your roof to stay moss and lichen free for several years.  Without the application of a biocide, moss and lichen will return to your roof within only a matter of months.

We are often asked why we don't use a pressure washer to clean uPVC. The reason we don't, is because pressure washers output water at a very high flow rate.
