Personal Trainers

James really helped me kick some excess weight and get into a groove of going to the gym, which I'd never really done before, and taking more care over my diet. He has a very grounded approach - no quackery or fads, just solid nutrition and training advice applied to your individual needs and situation. The Onside PT app is really easy to use and it syncs with other fitness and tracking apps which is handy. James is really friendly and encouraging. Obviously online training is different to an in-person PT but I felt that it was more holistic, covering more a lot more than a weekly PT session might. My time with JC has been incredible so far. I've always been very skinny and underweight, I was struggling with gaining weight and muscle and worrying about confidence, self-esteem,anxiety and was scared of going to the gym. I was looking everywhere to try and find the perfect way to fix it. I found that all the information on the internet, all the gym apps I downloaded were all made for people trying to lose weight and not gain weight, this made me feel really lost and worried about what to do next but luckily I found JC (OnsidePT).

I've been training with JC for around 6 months now and it's been some of the best months of my life. He has a heavily customizable approach to training, nutrition and all aspects of the health journey which make it super easy for any newcomer like myself to achieve their goals. With constant feedback and suggestions, it always feels like he's doing more than just his job because he actually cares for the outcome and well-being of his clients.
I needed to workout at home, he accommodated, worried about my form on an exercise, he taught me the correct way to do it, I was struggling for many weeks getting the form on a particular exercise, he replaced that with something I'd prefer that still targeted the same muscles. This approach to make the workout as appealing for the client is what I really love, it's never too much trouble to switch things around to make sure that you enjoy the overall experience.
I've now gone from pressing 20kg on my office floor to an actual gym pressing 45kg on a barbell and bench, JC sets you up so you always feel like you're equipped to tackle the whole fitness space, and it never feels like he holds information back, if he knows it (and he knows a lot) and it'll help, he'll let you know.
The OnsidePT app that JC uses is incredibly useful at tracking all food through linking to myfitnesspal, tracking weight changes and tracking all your workouts, exercises and exactly when and how to do them. You even get a nice notification when you complete a certain amount of workouts or beat your personal bests which is always rewarding. This makes the whole experience that much easier and more fun, it also means JC can constantly see how your workouts are going, and keep in touch about it. Including feedback every week to keep you on track with your goals.
Having a person to hold me accountable, constantly keep me pushing but understanding that everyone is human and has off days is just what I needed to help me feel comfortable going forward with my more healthy life. I reccomend JC to anyone, he will help change your life around what ever fitness problems you're facing and encourage you to be an even better person overall, while being a great dude to just have a chat too aswell in-between your sessions. If you're questioning whether or not to get a personal trainer. Invest in yourself by investing in JC because you're sure to see improvements across so many areas and really enjoy yourself doing so.

James has been a consistent professional for me. I mean, I've needed accountability help, I've needed help with finding the right foods for my protein levels (on a really strict diet) and I've needed help with preparing myself for regular gym sessions. James has helped immeasurably with each of these concerns of mine.
It's only been about 3 months but I see glimpses of the person I could become if I stay consistent. There's no way I would've reached that visualisation in a mirror had I tried to do this on my own (again!). Like many, I came to James for help in staying consistent. I kind of already knew what I "should" be doing but maintaining that discipline and responsibility on a daily basis is something I've only been able to do through James acting as my accountability contact and someone I can ask random health, fitness, nutrition, motivation and psychology question to; knowing that if he doesn't know the answer there and then, that he'll find it for me. Honest to god, the wiser people tend to suggest you should spend your money on self improvement. They're not wrong, it's the best investment I've made for my fitness, my confidence and my effort to maintain consistency and patience. In a roundabout way, it's improving every aspect of my life. Many, MANY thanks JC!

As for whoever's reading this, don't wait. Get on with hiring him and get on with upgrading yourself

I ended up on Bark.com, after years of stop-start training and dieting. My physical and mental health had been on a pretty steep downward spiral and I needed help. I put out what I can only describe as a plea for help from anyone that felt they might be able to assist me in turning things around and getting my fitness and general well being back on track.

I very quickly received two responses from personal trainers. One being James at Onside PT. He made contact by sending me a personalised video in which he first introduced himself and then very carefully worked through my Bark application form, not only looking at my stats but paying considerate attention to what I had written about myself, my situation and my various issues.

There wasn’t any pressure from James to take him up on his offer. None at all. Just a very personable, detailed and human description of how he felt he could help me.

I am approaching three months of working with James now. I have had some real ups and downs in my personal life during this duration and I have struggled to maintain consistency. However, James has been right there at the end of the phone throughout. Supporting, encouraging, understanding and motivating. In every single instance he has gone above and beyond for me; always listening, advising and encouraging. His workouts have produced some of the most gruelling and rewarding sessions I’ve experienced and his close monitoring of performance at the gym as well as food tracking has been a colossal help with my accountability.

Everything from start to finish has felt bespoke and personal. Essentially nothing like what I had always assumed online personal training would be.

Can’t rate James highly enough. He’s a game changer.

I've been working with James for over 3 months and have been very pleased with the results!
He tailored a plan unique to my goals and the results have been so much better than me getting in my old routine of 'doing the same old workouts' in the gym.

Straight off the bat, I recommend James as a PT. I am seeing the results I hope would come from working with a PT.

These are some of the reasons why I recommend James:

1. He reached out to me via my advert on this website in a friendly and upbeat manner. He asked very poignant questions so we could determine if and on what things we could work on together. There was no hard selling. A simple straight forward business-like manner which I really appreciate.

2. I don’t actually know what other personnel trainers charge on average as I have never used one before. I haven’t compared the price we agreed with other people’s fees as I am getting great value for my what I pay.

3. James was relaxed and patient and didn’t start our contract period until I got myself sorted with the equipment I needed, I got my finances in order, download the apps needed and I got my head ready, lol. Prior to our contract starting, he was also very helpful in providing me with advice on what equipment I needed and where I would likely find what I needed at affordable prices. We continued to talk and work on things so when I was ready, we could just crack on. As I live in the countryside I do not have access to a gym - James told me what specific items I would need for home-based workouts. He also told me what items were not worth buying in my specific situation, such as a smartwatch. (might be suitable for others, James will guide you)

4. James was excellent at assisting me to define my goals and coming to terms with what I would likely need to do to achieve these goals in reference to different time frames. Again, straightforward frank discussions with no sugar coating. Absolutely appreciate this approach, especially with this issue.

5. James introduced me to two apps I had never used before which he has a contract with, and adds you on as a user so there was no cost to me. One app James tailor makes very specific tasks that include explainer videos, records your stats etc. I just have to wake up, turn the app on and follow the programme laid out for me. The other app is used for recording your food intake. The two apps sync with each other. James uses the results of these for a review of how I have done through the week - which he sends to me via a video platform. The food app is challenging in the best way as you soon stop buying things I never knew had such high calories and fats in them. James will point out deficiencies that need addressing - for me this has been protein intake as I was a vegetarian for 20 odd years, my diet was always green, beans etc and he helped me target high protein fish, chicken breasts etc. James has been great with suggesting alternatives.

6. Recently I asked for a different routine to target some areas quicker. Without hesitation, James developed a new programme and uploaded it to the app - within days of me asking if it was possible for him and if he thought it sensible to do so. Was no trouble and the new programme is excellent.

7. Not only does James do all of this, but he also sends out a detailed ‘good read’ each week that tackles different issues we need to consider. This has included some excellent book recommendations on changing behavioural patterns, which have been very helpful in changing some habits I had. Most recently he provided an excellent ‘5 reasons you’re not losing weight’ document. All extremely helpful and laid out in a very easy-to-digest manner.

8. Aside from all this James is a very likeable, reliable, affable chap. If he ever came to this neck of the woods, I would very much enjoy a run with him and maybe a low-calorie beer too.

I honestly can't recommend James enough. Not only does he define a routine and goals that are achievable, realistic and inspiring, but he also provides in-depth, regular feedback to assist you on achieving them too!

He offers a truly personal service, and is available whenever I need him for advice and guidance. His weekly content is great for understanding all the aspects of your training, and on top of all that he brings a real positivity to training which is reflected in everything he provides you.

In short, James' training is 11 out of 10!

I’ll help you to achieve your short-term goals and give you the foundations, knowledge and consistency to get brilliant results in the long-term too.

Consistency and effort is key, within the right framework. By that I mean that you need to be consistently putting effort in each day in a productive and effective way. A good coach can give you the advice and guidance you need to ensure your efforts aren't wasted but they can't do the work for you!

Helping people to achieve their goals. There's nothing more satisfying than helping someone to get into a better physical and mental place or get into great shape for a big life event like a wedding.

I also love being able to help people to thrive in the long-term too whilst getting them great short-term results.
