Fitting a new consumer can be quite an involved job, where the power needs to be switched off for a few hours and each circuit connected to its relevant protective device. Both before and after powering up, thorough electrical testing is carried out and recorded as an Electrical Installation Certificate. This is presented to the customer on completion of the job and also submitted to building control. That is why it is imperative the installing of the consumer unit is carried out by a competent electrician who is also a member of a competent person’s scheme (Napit)

WHAT MAKES A GOOD ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION?
An electrical installation comprises all the fixed electrical equipment that is supplied through the electricity meter. It includes the cables that are usually hidden in the walls and ceilings, accessories (such as sockets, switches and light fittings), and the consumer unit (fusebox) that contains all the fuses, circuit-breakers and, preferably residual current devices (RCDs)*.

PV panels, also known as solar panels, capture the sun's energy and convert it into electricity. The electricity produced by PV panels is mostly used to power household appliances and equipment.

How Can a Solar Panel Power Your Home or Business?
The most typical solar panel system is the on-grid system, which, as the name suggests, is connected to the national grid. This means you can use electricity from the grid when the solar panels are not working at night.

Moreover, if your solar energy system produces more electricity than you need, Smart electricity clocks allow you to store the electricity you produce in the grid and use it later.

Building Regulations are the minimum standards set for the design, construction and alterations to buildings. They are regularly changed and updated by Government, and are approved by Parliament. Fundamentally, the Building Regulations work to ensure the health and safety of those using the building, and help conserve on fuel and power. They cover all aspects of construction, including foundations, damp-proofing, the overall stability of the building, insulation, ventilation, heating, fire protection and means of escape in case of fire. They also ensure that adequate facilities for people with disabilities are provided in certain types of building.

Smart homes, which contain today's technologies and which we see in many house advertisements, constitute a whole of architecture and technology. Well, if you are wondering what is a smart home, how are smart home systems, how are they made, this news is just for you. If you're ready, here we go!

. What is a PAT test?
A PAT test is a routine inspection of some types of electrical appliance to check they are safe to use. Its purpose is to prevent electrical accidents in the workplace.

A full PAT test should include both a visual inspection and a more in-depth check using specialist PAT testing equipment. This test includes earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance checks.

Some appliances only need a reduced test, called a PAT insulation test.

At the end of a PAT test, every appliance should be marked ‘passed’ or ‘failed’. Ideally there should be a record of the results.

Not all electrical items need to be PAT tested. We explain more in the section ‘Which items should be PAT tested?’ further down this page.
