As other reviewers have said, don't stop here if you have mobility problems or ask for a lower floor room, the stairs are a challenge! But we loved it, glorious view of the cathedral from our room, fantastic restaurant downstairs, perfectly cooked breakfasts (can well recommend the Haddock Smokie) and Wells is lovely. Staff very helpful and friendly, even though it was extremely busy in the rush up to Christmas. If you need lifts, standard size rooms and onsite parking stop at a premier inn, (and nothing wrong with Premier Inn! but if you prefer something with more history and character try the Ancient Gate House. Came to wells to go to Glastonbury carnival . I booked this hotel because of its location it’s perfect .|The staff were very friendly and welcoming |Our room was twin and was just right for what we needed and it was clean housekeeping did our room perfect Thankyou ❤️|Breakfast was so lovely and we ate in the restaurant and the food was fabulous compliments to the chef ❤️|Can’t wait to visit again next year already planning |Wells is a lovely place to visit lots to see and the cathedral was behind the hotel everything is in walking distance |The parking is a little awkward but I discovered a car park just in walking distance and I used the online parking that’s on the pay machines and I parked over night didn’t have to leave the hotel to put money in the machine all you need is the number on the side of the machine |Anyway we really enjoyed our stay with you guys and hope to see you again next year

This is now the Rugatino restaurant. Its Italian themed, with mainly their dishes and wines. We started with a mixed platter, which was adequate for two and very nice . The pasta and chicken dish was very good, as was the hake and prawn. Apart from the slightly expensive wines they also have beer and lager. We did find that the service was a little unpredictable, but that's what you find with employing teenagers. There needed to be better training in this respect. More...

Great hotel very old and with associated challenges like no parking on site - but hey ho cars did not exist when it was new some 800 years ago! Fantastic owner and staff couldn't do enough for us. Fab room room with a two poster bed and amazing view of Wells Cathedral and green - very interesting building climbing the stairs to our room was a good work out in it's own right! Brand new beautiful bathroom. Eat on the Saturday night in the restaurant Italian superb and lots of diners so obviously a local fav I think. Highly recommended. More...

We stayed as a group of 3 adults in two rooms (a single room no 4 and a double room no 5) for 4 nights in September 2019. Access to these two "attic"rooms is via a very steep staircase which proved somewhat of a challenge for one of our group - a mature person of 74 ! That aside the hotel is in a perfect position overlooking the Cathedral to the rear and close to all other attractions. The rooms were on the small side, but clean and comfortable. Room 4 had magnificent views of the Cathedral and was much quieter than room 5 which overlooked a busy road. Breakfast was very good with hot freshly prepared meals available. Staff were friendly and efficient and gave the impression that you were very welcome. The hotel shares the ground floor with a very good Italian restaurant with rooms on the next two floors , I believe the location of the hotel is so good that the absence of any on site parking can be accepted. I would certainly stay here again, but would choose a room on a lower floor! . More...

My friend and I stayed here for five nights last week and really enjoyed the experience. Our room was on the first floor facing on to the street and fortunately we did not have too many steep windy stairs to go up with our suitcases. The room was small, which was the only downside but the beds were really comfortable and breakfast was excellent each morning, cooked fresh to order. Car parking was a bit of an issue as we had to move the car by a certain time. The views from the beer garden, looking directly on to the Cathedral, were magnificent and the location could not have been better. Emily and Alex deserve a special mention as they were so helpful during our stay but the "boss" should be proud of all his staff as they all gave excellent customer service. Our two evening meals in the on-site restaurant were really good. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. It would not be suitable if you need disabled access because of the age of the building and the steep stairs but for something a little bit different I would highly recommend it. More...

When looking at hotels in Wells for several nights for myself and a friend, I decided I wanted to stay in the centre and some of the hotels were probably a little outside our price range. The Ancient Gatehouse's location was perfect and only a few hundred yards from the front of the cathedral, with excellent views of it from the beer garden at the back of the hotel. It was also little more than five minutes walk from Vicar's Close, one of the attractions in the city and a similar distance to the Bishop's Palace. The downside of this location was a total lack of off road car parking although the hotel did send a list of suitable parking places prior to our arrival. Each evening, we were lucky enough to secure a space on St Andrew's Street which is parallel to the cathedral and can be viewed from the hotel and this was valid from 4 pm until 10 am the following day. As it turned out, we were ready to go out before 10 am each morning in any case.||||The staff were incredibly helpful and pleasant. Emily, Alex, Morgan and Edward just couldn't do enough to assist all the guests.||||Wifi was free and reasonably reliable. Breakfasts were always cooked to order.||||I did feel that our room (11) was ripe for redecoration as it was rather shabby and the handrail going up the stairs needed repolishing.||||The pros definitely outweighed the cons and I would be happy to stay here again. This hotel has loads of charm and history - our bedroom (up in the gods) was quirky and we had to be careful not to bump into beams. The bathroom and basin (in the room) was very tired and sorely in need of refurbishing. The bedroom was accessed by a very old stone worn spiral staircase so this and the fact that parking is extremely difficult in Wells make the hotel unsuitable for older or infirm people.
