What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
The secret of a great picture is to make sure that the subject is relaxed and enjoys the informality of my style of work. I try not to use any floodlights and instead basic natural light (with a dash of infill flash if needed). Photographing in people's homes make the occasion more natural and the settings more familiar. Weddings and corporate events often require formal line-ups - these can be boring to look at but can be fun and more interesting to do with a little bit of tweaking - state secret! There is formal and formal with an informal twist!
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
What style are YOU looking for? Informal or formal or a mixture of both? Is mobility a problem?
What do you love most about your job?
Meeting people. I am a people person and enjoy getting to know about individuals. Being a former schoolmaster I understand children well and parents ! and am able to relate easily and put people at their ease. Vital for photographing life!
What inspired you to start your own business?
As a former schoolmaster taking images for school websites / magazines etc. I was often asked by parents to photo their children and other family events in the holidays. I was popular and booked quite readily. When I gave up teaching it was the natural thing to look at a new career and my love for photography and meeting people stood in good stead.
Why should our clients choose you?
I am relaxed, I don't bully clients into what I want, but listen to what they want and between us we can come to a string agreement of what will work best. I am low key at weddings (with a sense of humour for mass group images!) and this is hugely appreciated.After all, the photographs of any type are for the customer, not me!
