I had my initial cataract consultation with Mr Balaggan at Beacon Park Hospital, Stafford. I found him very helpful as he explained all the different lenses available and gave me booklets with all the information also to visit his website. I decided to go ahead with the trifocal lenses which suited my lifestyle best. I have now had both eyes done, my vision is better than 20/20, I no longer need glasses to read or do intricate jobs. I was referred specifically to Mr Balaggan due to worsening vision due to cataracts.
He gave a very detailed assessment and advice concerning both treatment and replacement lens options,following which I chose the best quality intraocular lens.
The two operations were very successful,and also stress free,and also corrected an astigmatism that I was not aware of.

I have always been very shortsighted. I was referred by my optician to Mr Balaggan after rapidly worsening sight in my left eye.
Mr Balaggan did a thorough examination and recommended a toric lens especially made for my eye in Germany. It took a few months to arrive. Mr Kam Balaggan was recommended to me by my optician for cataract surgery because of an additional problem in both my eyes.
After a thorough examination including several tests/scans and discussions with Mr Balaggan he recommended a premium toric astigmatism-correcting lens in each eye. I found Mr Balaggan very reassuring, the procedures went smoothly and were pain free.
My clarity of vision quickly returned in both my eyes and is now amazing. It is wonderful not to have to wear glasses which I have worn for over 60 years, I now only need reading glasses for very small print. I can drive again at night which had become a major problem for me.

From the very first appointment with Mr Balaggan I was treated with professionalism and kindness. I was given an in depth and very thorough scan and check up before Mr Balaggan described what he considered the best procedure for my eye. My mother underwent cataract surgeries on her left eye and right eye at Spire Little Aston Hospital. Her eyesight is better thanks to Mr Balaggan. In terms of customer care and advice both before, during and after the operation including the initial appointment and the follow-up appointments, these were excellent. My mother has stated that Mr Balaggan is an excellent surgeon, is thoroughly professional, has a personable and caring attitude which is really required to put patients at ease.

My bilateral cataract surgery, carried out at the Nuffield hospital in Wolverhampton by Mr Balaggan and his team, has provided me with outstanding vision, for which I am, of course, extremely grateful. Mr Balaggan suggested for me monofocal lenses with enhanced medium range vision. The result is that I can see perfectly in the distance and medium range, and can read too. I shall wear reading glasses if I am reading for any length of time, as I knew I would need to, before the surgery. The whole process was extremely efficient and, as the patient, I felt relaxed and totally supported throughout. There was certainly no pain or even discomfort for me. Thrilled with the results!
No hesitation is recommending Mr Balaggan & his team at Spire Little Aston. They have been reassuring every step of the way and I have always felt in safe and friendly hands.
My vision was good within hours of both ops and the sense of wonder the first day after op no.1 - being able to see colour contrast and crisp images was a revelation.
Was greatly encouraged by my fellow patients waiting for the first op. Naturally I was apprehensive but the reassurance and camaraderie from the others going through the same thing meant a lot
I confess I nearly cried when I realised I would have to have cataract surgery. If only I had known though what a transformation having it done has given me. I was diagnosed with cataracts and had them both removed and lenses implanted on consecutive weeks in July 2021. I now have perfect vision for the first time since I was a child when all I can remember is having to wear glasses. Lens quality is outstanding. I cannot thank Mr Balaggan, enough as he has given me the quality of vision that I could only have dreamt of. In September 2021, after noticing cloudiness in one of my eyes (that was not due to dirty glasses!) I was given, what seemed like really upsetting news - ‘you have a cataract’. I very soon entered unfamiliar territory…..eye surgery and naturally, I felt anxious.

Looking back (I’m delighted to say, with perfect vision) I can say that, not only was the outcome brilliant, but the whole experience, including the surgery itself, was made so much easier because of Mr Balaggan.

He has a wonderful reassuring and gentle style and inspires confidence because of his knowledge, immense skills and vast expertise.

Having worn glasses since I was seven, I’ve never been able to read the sight test bottom line, even with glasses.

I received cataract removal surgery from Kam Balaggan. My case was not straight forward as I had, only 8 months before, previously had retinal reattachment surgery. It was even more complicated by the fact that I have very little vision in my other eye. Kam was professional, discussed all options and made me feel informed and at ease at all times. A little late in writing this reference.
I had a cataract removed /implant in August by Mr Balaggan
This was the inevitable consequence of having a successfull victrectomy and epiretinal peel) undertaken by Mr Balaggan in March this year.
I was obviously quite anxious about the vitrectomy as that was a major eye procedure but now having already been through this with Mr Balaggan this time I was no more anxious than a visit to the dentist where he performed & exhibited his amazing expertise, professionalism, & calming approach throughout.
Upon my return final consultation he confirmed I had better than 2020 vision in my left eye & following a visit to his recommended opthalmic opticians I now have glasses with Slight prisms which have brought my site back to virtually as it was before I had the retinal problem a year ago.
I highly recommend Mr Balaggan for any eye related issues, as you can have absolute faith in his expertise any advice he gives or procedure he performs.
If I have the need (hopefully not) Mr Balaggan is the only eye specialist I will consider!

The idea of surgical procedures, especially on your eyes whilst being wide awake is daunting. After my consultations with Kam Balaggan he felt more like a friend than the gifted surgeon he undoubtably is. I lost all trepidation and gained confidence by the meticulous detailed examinations and discussions over the various options open.
My hobby is Clay Pigeon shooting and my performances over the last few years had deteriorated, I needed both distance and reading glasses and I was suffering from the dreaded "floaters" in both eyes and the onset of cataracts, not the best aids to shooting.
After Vitrectomy and EDOF lens replacement to both eyes (and a retinal peel to my right eye) I now have clear 6/4 vision in both eyes, do not need glasses and as my brain gets used to the new signals it is receiving my shooting is steadily improving.

Mr Kam Balaggan recently removed cataracts from both my eyes and fitted a trifocal lens in one eye and an extended depth of focus lens in the other, as he felt this would achieve the best result - and he was right. I can honestly say I have never been able to see as well at all distances. The whole process, from initial consultation to surgery took less than a month with a follow-up consultation a month later. I was referred to Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital by my Shrewsbury Optometrist and was put in the expert hands of Kam Balaggan. My eye problems were complex as I had already had retinal detachments in both eyes several years ago, which left me with a lamellar hole in my left eye. I was also in the early stages of developing cataracts in both eyes. I had a long history of short-sightedness, combined with severe astigmatism. My initial meetings with Kam filled me with confidence, and I was undoubtedly going to be in the best possible hands. His patience in explaining the multiple issues was limitless. Over the course of a number of appointments, Kam undertook several tests, making detailed measurements for my specific requirements, and was clearly determined to miss nothing to achieve the best possible outcome. The replacement of my lenses has exceeded any expectations that I could have hoped for. My post-operative consultation has confirmed that I now have 20/20 vision. Last November Kam Balaggan performed a vitrectomy operation on my right eye following vitreal traction causing a split in the central retina. During this surgery, it was also necessary to have two retinal tears treated. After some convalescence my eyesight improved dramatically. A few months later however, my right eye developed a cataract, which was expected, due to the vitreous surgery. On 21st June 2021 Kam performed a cataract operation on my right eye, which was also very successful. I was seen again for a follow-up appointment for my right eye and was highly delighted to be able to read the smallest line on the test chart! This shows what an incredibly skilled ophthalmic surgeon Kam Balaggan is, and undoubtedly if I hadn't had this successful surgery, I would have been blind in my right eye. I was referred to Mr Balaggan by my optometrist as the cataract in one eye seemed to have worsened quite rapidly and I was concerned that the cataract in my other eye might similarly deteriorate and that this would considerably limit my activities. I was soon offered a consultation date and appreciated flexibility in choosing the date to fit in with my commitments. Mr Balaggan was very thorough, pleasant and reassuring. He is extremely knowledgeable and inspires confidence. I was very happy that he was able to operate on first one eye, then the other, within a few weeks. On both occasions the operation was over very quickly, and the Nuffield staff were all very attentive and caring during the short time I was there.
The only slight drawback of the whole experience was that the date for my second eye was put back by a week or so at fairly short notice, necessitating some rearrangement of family activities, but the end result of clear, bright vision with both eyes, make it all very worthwhile. More...

I had worn glasses for 60 years, I have just had my cataracts removed and stigma corrected with these amazing new multifocal lens implants. I now have perfect 20/20 vision and no need for even reading glasses. Specsavers Bloxwich high st recommended, Mr Kam Balaggan to me for a consultation for cataract surgery on my right eye, which i must admit wasn't good! Mr Balaggan said i would notice a difference in my left eye after surgery because there was a cataract developing there too, so after going through what options were best and what lenses i decided to have cataract surgery on both eyes. In December 2020 I developed a large Weiss ring and many other new small floaters in my left eye because of PVD. I was told by my optometrist that my retina was fine, and I'd get used to it. I wasn't happy with this, but once I found Kam in February 2021 (and after we'd shared science fiction convention photos!) I was still a little reticent to have the vitrectomy he recommended to remove the debris, and it's true that I did get used to it up to the point where it didn't really bother me - although for example I needed larger computer monitors to be able to continue to work effectively. After the four months I'd promised myself to attempt to cope with it (during which I read a lot about eye health and vitrectomy procedures, which put my mind at ease), Kam performed the vitrectomy in early May.

I have to say the entire experience was almost pleasant; the worst discomfort of the whole procedure was the removal of the tape from my hand that held on the canula for the anaesthetic! It took just over a week for the eye to fill up with liquid, which was interesting to watch especially as it fills from the top down, as light is inverted in your eye (i.e., we effectively see upside-down). Kam phoned a few days later as promised. We didn't have the usual follow-up examination because the hospital was closed for the bank holiday, but it wasn't required. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome.

I'm especially glad I had it done, because (not entirely unexpectedly) the same thing occurred in my right eye in July: a large Weiss ring with even more debris (like an inverted starfield). I had the usual emergency check-up with my optometrist and again, no retinal problems which of course was good news. Still, if I hadn't had the left vitrectomy, I doubt I would be able to drive now. My brain had already adapted to ignoring floaters as best it could, so at least I didn't have to go through that again. The floaters are still in your field of vision all the time though, so there's only so much you can get used to. It's like a moving smear of Vaseline on the outside of your spectacle lenses: sometimes you might see clearly enough to read, other times there's a massive blur in the way.

I saw Kam again and am waiting for three months for things to settle down, as before. Also, there was high pressure and a possible (minor) infection in the left eye so these conditions are being treated with drops; I want to make sure the left eye is fine before entertaining the idea of a procedure on the right. So, I'll be seeing Kam again sometime around Christmas, and I'm looking forward to (all being well) a second vitrectomy and clear vision once more.

It’s worth mentioning that a vitrectomy can accelerate the development of cataracts but reading the reviews on this page I'm not worried about that, as lens replacement for cataracts has now become a routine procedure. Thanks Kam and see you soon! More...

My 84yr old mother recently had cataracts removed from both eyes by My Balaggan at Nuffield Hospital, Wolverhampton. From the initial consultation to the follow-up appointment four weeks after surgery, the treatment we received from him and Nuffield was exemplary, At the initial consultation, he answered all our questions. My mother is wheelchair reliant and unable to walk or stand and transfer independently. This was not a problem and Mr Balaggan together with the staff at Nuffield, put everything in place to meet her mobility needs and facilitate the surgery. My mother was nervous about having the cataracts removed even though they were causing her eyesight to be severely impaired. Mr Balaggan explained the procedures and completely put her mind at rest. On the days of the operations, he came into my mother's hospital room to check she was ok both before and after the procedures. She also received phone calls at home after both operations to make sure everything was fine and there were no problems, My mother's eyesight has been transformed. Pre-cataract removal, she could only read down to the third row of letters on the eye-test chart. At the follow-up appointment with Mr Balaggan, post-cataract removal, she read down to the seventh line of letters. She can read subtitles on the TV and can now see with such clarity. The treatment for cataract by its very description, can be rather daunting. If anyone reading this is contemplating having this treatment you need have no worries. After full discussions and advice about what needs to be done - there is minimal discomfort and 15-20 minutes for the procedure with continuous attention from Mr Balaggan. His professionalism and patience was outstanding and personable throughout. After an ERM and cataract operations in both eyes, my vision is the best it has ever been.
