I am a guitar tutor with 12 years of experience teaching students of all ages and skill levels. I have had the pleasure of teaching in South Africa (where I am originally from), Ireland, and England. Currently I am the Music Teacher and Guitar Tutor at The Drive Preparatory School in Brighton, and I am offering private guitar tutoring in Brighton and online across the U.

My daughter started guitar lessons with Josh about two years ago. Not only has she learnt to play an instrument, her confidence has really grown by taking up a hobby away from a wretched screen and teenage drama. She now has an acoustic and an electric guitar and has made friendships based on music. Her understanding of music has also improved, and I'm surprised by all the artists she listens too. Buying her a guitar on her 12th birthday was one of the best things I've done. However, without her weekly classes this would have just been another forgotten present. The classes keep her improving and motivated. It's lovely to see how music has helped her become more assertive of her own individuality. Josh is a wonderful teacher. I started taking guitar lessons with Josh 6 months ago and I'm very happy. I had a bit of guitar before I started the lessons but I had no knowledge on the theory.
I wanted to learn new songs but also understand the structure of music. Josh blends the theory exercises with specific songs that I like, which makes learning very interesting and fun. Josh has also put together his own note book with hundreds of songs and exercises, so everything is on paper. I would highly recommend Josh's guitar lessons.

What do you love most about your job?
Strumming along to a favourite song, and creating new music is an amazing feeling - I love being able to develop and share that experience with my students.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have always been passionate about music, and specifically guitar. I wanted to find ways to make guitar a central feature of my life. Tutoring guitar allows me to share my passion with others, and it also creates the flexibility I need to perform as a musician, and to study music further.
Why should our clients choose you?
I am an experienced teacher and I am also very patient and flexible in my approach. I understand that people are interested in guitar for a variety of reasons, with a variety of existing skills and aptitudes, and I try to make sure that I am always accommodating of those individual needs and goals.

I generally offer my online lessons over zoom, but I am also able to use any videoconferencing software that is preferred by the student.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
I am happy to make any accommodations you may need to feel protected during lessons, including hand sanitizing, and social distancing.
Guitar Lessons
Guitar lesson are 30 or 45 minutes and will focus on 6 core guitar skills: chords, strumming, scales, picking, finger style, and theory. These skills will be applied to classic and contemporary songs across rock and pop. There is flexibility to focus on your own song choices and preferred music genres. Learning to read music is optional, and guitar can be learned by reading guitar tabs which is easier to follow than traditional musical notation.
Music Theory
Music theory is not a requirement for getting very proficient at guitar, but for those who are interested, music theory can be incorporated into the guitar lessons.
Improvisation (Jamming)
If you are beyond the beginner level and you are looking to expand your guitar playing repertoire, I can offer lessons that are more focused on learning and creating new songs in the musical style of your preference, but my personal area of expertise is in the style of rock, pop, and punk.
GCSE Music Tutoring
I currently work as the Music Teacher at The Drive Prep School in Brighton. I offer tutoring for GCSE Music Exams across all exam boards.
