About

My name is Josh and I am an experienced bass guitar teacher. Through my career of teaching bass guitar, I have developed my own style of teaching that has proven extremely effective with my students. Rather than focusing solely on theory, or just learning songs from tabs, I like to tailor each individual teaching session to my student and what they want and need.

Josh has been a fab teacher for my son! He's been patient, knowledgeable, adaptable to my son's learning needs and has always been absolutely professional, with excellent communication with me as a parent. My son has made mentions that Josh has been fun to work with, that he has always felt he had patience with him with his learning and that 'Josh is pretty cool'.....high praise from a teenager I'd say! Highly recommend if you're looking for a bass guitar instructor (or other instrument if he teaches it!) More...

Guitar Lessons

I had an initial lesson with Josh pre-Christmas; it went really well and l’ll be resuming towards the latter half of this month, which l’m looking forward to. I highly recommend Josh.

Guitar Lessons

Josh has been teaching online bass lessons to my son for 7 months. He has been very understanding and flexible in his approach and was great at putting my son at ease and connecting in to what was important to him to learn. My son very much looks forward to his bass lessons with Josh each week and has grown in skill and confidence - always keen to share what he has learned with me. I highly recommend Josh, he has made the process so easy and enjoyable and helped me with any technical difficulties too. More...

Guitar Lessons

It is probably quite daunting for Josh to take on a beginner student at my age (I’m retired) but he is very patient and tolerant and always encouraging. Even though my progress is slow Josh ensures each lesson is sufficiently challenging and we cover something new each time which keeps me interested. A natural teacher! More...

Guitar Lessons

I have had quite a few lessons with Josh and have found him to be an extremely positive, enthusiastic and patient music tutor. I have already learnt so much with him. I suffer from severe anxiety and social anxiety but Josh always puts me at ease and is very supportive. I am scared to do things I am unsure of, but eagerly look forward to my lessons because he has such an affable, positive personality. The sessions are fun, flexable and focused. He makes me want to practice and is always available to answer any questions I may have. More...

I've learnt so much and gained so much confidence in what I am doing on bass guitar in the past few months working with Josh. ..
As a relatively new bass guitar student, I have been having lessons with Josh for nearly four months now and am really enjoying them!
Our lessons are always varied and productive - typically a combination of me playing something we have been working on, followed by feedback from Josh (tips, corrections, improvements, ideas - often including great demonstrations from Josh) - usually linking things back to music theory - and perhaps looking at and talking about different songs and musical styles...
As a slightly older learner, I worry that I don't perhaps pick things up as easy as a younger learner would - but Josh is hugely patient and has a great style of encouragement and support to help me improve.
Josh makes the lessons feel very relaxed - which is great, as I seem to put plenty of pressure on myself!
My personal preference is to have a target to meet for the next lesson - whether that be learning a new song, or polishing an existing song, or some other aspect of development - and Josh is good at setting those targets.
Thank you Josh - I'm really appreciating working with you!

Guitar Lessons

He’s very patient and he helps you with riffs👍 He shows how to do it on his bass then you do it then he helps you if you find it tricky. I really enjoy my lessons with Josh (Abi age 8) More...

As I am a member of a band who plays gigs from time to time, Josh has the experience and knowledge to help me understand the issues. He’s been a great help expanding my technical and musical knowledge and he’s great at listening to my ideas and working on good practices.

I’m usually very keen to practice the things he’s suggested, and he’s helped re write songs that are too difficult for me to play (in my band) this has helped me understand music better too.

We highly recommend Josh - he's very professional and makes the lessons fun for our 15 year old, who's progress is obvious.

Guitar Lessons

Very good. It would be very easy for someone to just 'show' me how to play whereas Josh is 'teaching' me how to play. There's a difference. Josh has been very patient with me and I feel like I'm making good progress and above all, I'm enjoying it. Thank you Josh. More...

I enjoyed having lessons and the lessons had good and nice baselines and songs. The techniques and the way I was taught how to play the bass guitar was good. Overall I like practising with Josh. More...

Q&As

What I love most about being a musician is the community that you become a part of as you grow as a musician. As a teacher, it is important to me to remember my own musical background, and inspire those who are finding music to become the best that they can be.

I was inspired to start teaching, as I enjoy seeing new generations of musicians finding and engaging with music as I did when I first started playing my instrument. As a freelance musician I can also share my first hand experiences in the music industry, and give useful advice to my students on how best to progress as a bassist and musician.

Unlike some tutors, I do not have a rigid teaching style that I stick to. I make sure to find out about each student and personalise the lessons to suit. Everyone likes different music, wants to play different styles and learns in different ways, so it is important to me that each individual's lessons reflect that.

Yes, I can teach my lessons remotely via Skype, meaning no matter where you are, you can take lessons with me.

Services

As a bassist with experience in the music industry, rather than just teaching you how to play bass guitar, I will also use my experiences and mistakes to help you become a well rounded musician instead of just a bassist. I can teach with both tab and standard notation, so no matter your previous experience or what you wish to get out of tuition I can cater the lessons to your requirements.
