About
As a coach I will be totally focused on achieving identifiable results and base my renumeration on those results rather than just the time I spend with you. I firmly believe that everyone who comes to me has enormous potential and almost exclusively has the abilities to reach the goals that you are striving for.
The fact that you are reaching out for support speaks volumes and is a positive attribute in itself, as it already shows a great deal of self-awareness, openness and the will to change. Everyone (including myself) has barriers to overcome to achieve life goals, but not everyone realises that they almost always have the answers to these barriers within themselves. Unfortunately, they are sometimes locked away. I believe it is my job as your coach to help you unlock that potential usually by finding the right answers for yourself, rather than being explicitly handed solutions.
We will explore your personal values and beliefs, as people often under-perform because of the conflict between these and your desires in life.
Succeeding in life has many dimensions but three fundamentals are your work, well-being and home-life. I believe I am very well qualified to understand the challenges and barriers we all face regarding these aspects of our lives. I have a Masters degree in Business Psychology from Kingston University, which has given me a great grounding in the both the theoretical and practical aspects of work, work-life balance, what recruiters are looking for, and covering many aspects of coaching and mentoring, formalising what I had been practicing over many years as a Team Leader and Manager. I am also a Registered Career Development Professional with the Career Development Institute, the UK’s professional body for all aspects of career development.
My 30+ year career and qualifications in occupational health and safety also give me a professional insight into work stress, well-being and human factors in decision making. In all the companies that I worked in, I was required to guide, mentor and regularly review performance for the members of my Team or department. This was an aspect that I really enjoyed, and I am still in touch with several ex-colleagues who have gone on to great success who generously attribute some of that to my support and guidance.
Of equal importance though are the interests I have, my own home & social life and the challenges I have faced (and usually overcome). I am father to two children that I love dearly, one at university and the other in sixth form college. I was married for over 25 years, but am recently divorced, and I like to think that we will work not just with focus and earnestness, but with enjoyment and humour!
My background in the engineering and energy industry was strongly geared towards setting and achieving targets and the timely production of deliverables. These are values that I bring as a coach, lending structure and purpose to what can be a wide ranging and often daunting exploration of each client’s goals, barriers to these goals and how best to overcome those barriers. As a senior leader and advisor to executive and advisory board members I had to be articulate and able to present difficult data and information in a way that was easy for the non-expert to grasp and base their decision making on. Again, whether verbal or written, I use this communication skill set to my clients’ advantage.
Given that our sessions may take place over weeks, months or even years I believe a coach should maintain accurate records that are entirely accessible to the client. In this way, joint periodic review can help us accurately gauge progress, know what methods tend to work (and what doesn’t) and therefore shape the future approach.
In summary, I have enjoyed a varied career working for big multi-national companies and small niche companies (both primarily in engineering and the energy sector), I have worked for institutions like the EU and international financiers. I have started companies and worked for myself as a consultant and developer, I have worked as a volunteer, I have lived and worked abroad. On the flipside, I have also had to close companies, suffered redundancy and harder times, and personally know the challenges of trying to maintain the balance between achieving personal goals and having a loving and rewarding family & social life. However, what some would perceive as negative experience, has often taught me the most about how to overcome my barriers, how to obtain a successful and spiritually rich life enabling me to empathise with clients, relate to their struggles and understand the barriers they are facing.
My approach is holistic and we will consider multiple dimensions of your life. This includes work, personal well-being (physical, mental and spiritual), wealth and self-worth, family and social relationships. We will work to achieve a healthy balance that allows you to achieve your life goals, but not at unacceptable cost to other aspects of your life.
I look forward to working together, enabling and empowering you to reach your potential, achieving the results and outcomes I know you are capable of.
