Jo has transformed our 2 year old rescue dog. We have gone from dreading taking him out in case we came across people and other dogs to enjoying our park walks. She has calmed both us and our dog. Very knowledgeable and professional. Thank you More...

Really helpful advice about how to look after our new puppy. We'd done "puppy classes" but needed help with making feeding more interesting (incl how to make a "snuffle mat"), walking on lead, not picking up everything on ground (! ) and settling in the car. Very practical and focused. Extremely knowledgeable and I liked her evidence-based approach. More...

My partner and I have employed Jo's services three times in the past few months for our two Jack Russell Terriers. Our younger one is terrified of children, which manifests itself as vocal "attacks" on unsuspecting youngsters, and our older one is generally anxious and has a tendency to guard his food and sleeping area.

I thought I was pretty up to date on dog behaviour, but I quickly realised that I was using older methods of training that didn't build my dogs' confidence. Jo showed us how to start using techniques to get their brains working, and after a week of implementing her ideas we saw a change in their demeanour. Both dogs are much happier now, their appetites have improved and I'm no longer on edge every time I see a child approach.

Far from being judgemental or intimidating, Jo is always realistic and non-pushy. We would both recommend her to anyone looking for a down-to-earth behaviourist to help with any problem, and we will certainly call on her again if we need anything in the future.

Alfie had a bit of a problem with possessiveness, growling and snapping when trying to get something off him and also chasing the cat! We learned a lot from Jo and now he is a much more pleasant dog to be around, no growling or snapping and getting on much better with the cat. Great work Jo! More...

Jo is without a doubt the best, most current, most knowledgable trainer and behaviourist I have ever worked with. When we first got our lovely Spanish rescue dog, Panhandle, I was given very poor advice by another 'behaviourist'. Everything they told me to do made her worse! She was becoming more and more stressed, barked at people in the street, lunged at dogs and I was getting injured (accidentally) by her on a daily basis. I did everything I was advised to do and nothing helped. By the time I had my first visit from Jo, I was exhausted, sore, in tears and ready to give Pan up (*sob!!)

From the very first behaviourist session with Jo, Panhandle showed signs of improvement. Jo is so kind, never judgemental and explains everything so clearly. NOT all behaviourist are the same!! The people I used before, I now know, are extremely out of date and out of touch in their (always reward based, but not scientific or even logical) methods.

Whilst it takes work, time and money, having clear, kind methods that work so well make it all so worth it. Jo really excels in her work with rescue dogs and with so many now being shipped in from Europe, I strongly recommend Jo above anyone as your go-to. I have such a happy dog now, we are so much more bonded, I adore her and only very rarely get an injury!! Mostly my fault these days for forgetting she's still learning, silly me!

If anyone wants to message or ask me anything about my experience with the first trainers and how Jo was so different then pleas feel free!

Jo came to our rescue with Ned, our 5-year-old Brittany Spaniel. Since having three children in 3 years, Ned started to bark very loudly at door knocking/outside noises, pull on lead etc. Jo came to see us twice and I can't recommend her enough. She was very understanding of the situation and came up with realistic solutions for us and for him, taking into account our lifestyle and his breed.

During the first session we took notes but these were then followed up by an email from Jo the next day. She showed us practical ways of reducing the barking as well as taking us out for a walk around the block to help us with his pulling. From the moment she left we made changes to his meal times/the positioning of his bed etc and we felt an immediate shift of energy in the house.

Jo is very well read and up to date in the science behind dog Behavioural methods and is brilliant at making you see the dogs point of view and why he may have been behaving in a certain way.

By the second session we put into practice all the advice we had been given, still a little way to go but Jo was very honest and said we were doing all the right things now and there was no need to see her again. And if continued with the training it would only be a matter of time until we could irradicate the old annoying habits. Happy household and a very happy Ned. Thanks Jo!

Our dog had a serious problem with recall. Just over a year ago he escaped and ran off into a road and was hit by a car. Fortunately he only suffered a broken front leg, and ended up with it in plaster for a couple of months. After he had recovered we asked Jo to help. She taught us so much about how dogs behave, how they see the world, and how we should interact with them. Gradually and with lots of practice the training techniques that Jo taught us paid off, and our dog's recall is now almost perfect. Walking in the park with him off-lead after so long on the lead is now a real pleasure. Jo also hepled with his training in other areas, for example how to prevent him over-reacting when people visit the house, and how to deal with situations when dogs 'engage' with each other when they
meet on street walks. We are very thankful and recommend Jo for anyone who has problems with their dog.

Our whole training experience with Jo was brilliant. Her sense of humour made it fun to do and we thought of it as training for ourselves not just for "Alfie" our 4 month Labradoodle! ! Her refreshing approach to training was a bit of an eye opener for us. She explained the psychological aspects of dog behaviour we had never even considered. The body language of dogs was extremely interesting. She always was at hand by phone, text which was very supportive. The modern positive methods proved very successful and our old fashioned ideas we had were soon put to bed. We would definitely recommend Jo to anyone who wishes the training without question. The days spent out in the local park proved successful and was essential in our opinion which added some variety. Q&As

Helping owners develop the relationship they have always wanted with their dog.

Working in a rescue centre I want to help prevent pets being put up for adoption due to behaviour issues.

I think it's important to find the right Trainer that suits your needs as an owner.

Services

Would you like your dog to walk loosely on a lead?
Would you like your dog to come when called?
Would you like your dog to stop jumping up?

If you are having a problem with any of the training issues above or would just like to do some training with your dog, then Joanne’s one to one sessions are definitely for you.

Joanne will work with you in your own home and in the places where you regularly exercise and walk your dog, this after all is where you need the control. Dog training classes are not always as affective or beneficial to dogs as we would like, they can be stressful for some dogs, cause further behaviour problems and what your dog has learnt in a confined class situation, is not always easy to transfer to where you regularly walk or exercise your dog. With one to one sessions you get the full attention of a trainer and get to work in your local area dealing with real life situations.

Do you have a dog that doesn’t like other dogs?
Do you have a dog that lunges at vehicles?
Do you have a dog that is unsure of strangers?

If you are having issues with the above or any other problems, then a behaviour consultation is required…….there are many problems that a behaviour consultation will be required for; dog to dog aggression, people aggression, separation related problems, lead frustration, food guarding, toy guarding, barking at strangers and lots more. Behaviour problems can be very frustrating and stressful for any owner, thats where Joanne comes in.

Many behaviour problems can stem from underlying health problems i.e. dogs who are reactive on the lead can be suffering from neck injuries, dogs urinating in the house can have bladder problems, so it is important to have a vet check over your dog first before getting a behaviour specialist in, which could ultimately save you money.

Contact me below and we can arrange a convenient appointment where I can visit you and your pet in your own home to assess the problem, discuss your goals and formulate a retraining or behaviour modification programme. On-going support and help is regarded as an important part of the process.

Do you want your puppy house trained quickly?
Do you want a relaxed walk with no pulling?
Do you want to prevent problems in the future?

If the answer to any of the questions above is YES, then one of the below choices will be perfect for you.

Book in advance for when your puppy arrives, don’t wait until problems arise future proof your puppy now! Training can start as early as 8 weeks the sooner the better, one of the most critical period of a puppies life is between approximately 2 – 16 weeks this is a small window to getting it right, this is why Jo Hinds sessions start off in your home where there is no risk to your unvaccinated puppy. Puppy ownership is not just about training, there are many behavioural aspects that need to be carefully managed to ensure you have a confident well balanced dog, that does not resort to aggression towards people or dogs, is not destructive or anxious when left alone and lives in harmony with you and your family.

PUPPY ADVICE SESSION This is a 1 1/2 – 2 hour session, where Joanne will come to your home providing advice and guidance on living with your puppy and preventing behaviour problems for the future, covering topics such as; House Training, Puppy Biting/Mouthing, Separation problems, Puppy Chewing, Jumping Up, Effective Socialisation, Body Language, Fear, Mental Stimulation, Understanding your breed/cross breed, and answering any other questions or concerns you may have.

PUPPY COURSE Joanne will work with you and your puppy, in your own home and outside in your local area, where you will be regularly walking and exercising your puppy, this is where you will need the help the most.
