About

Hi there! James here. I'm a passionate, personable and creative music teacher with a PGCE in Secondary Music from the Institute of Education at UCL, and a Music Degree with 1st Class Honours from the University of Manchester.

I play trombone, guitar, piano and I sing, and I write music for picture (using Logic Pro X) too.

James is an exceptional teacher and facilitator. Incredible musician and the nicest guy you will ever meet. I would highly recommend James as a piano teacher for children and adults

Q&As

Being a part of other people succeeding in learning something that I've benefitted from, and know they will benefit from hugely too. Whether it's piano, singing, composition...helping others create, explore and learn to master something is inspiring for me.

I first taught instrumental lessons when I was still at school. I completed my grades at a young age so was able to pass on the expertise I'd benefitted to others. Having finished my PGCE year in music, I knew I wanted to teach 1 on 1, to be able to focus on a single person's development closely, and put my creativity into creating a bespoke learning program that isn't tied down to what a school chooses to do every year.

Well, let's start with what others have said. I was offered a job by the head of music at my first placement school on my PGCE within a week because I "just get it". When I left, the music technician said I was the best PGCE student they'd ever had.

In my second placement, I was told I was well beyond the level of a PGCE student, and was one of the two top students selected by the university for external examination a.k.a to show off. This is for the university ranked 1st in the world for teaching (ahead of Harvard). After observing my teaching, I was told by the assistant headteacher that I was "exactly the kind of teacher they would be looking for", and by the head of music that "you wouldn't guess that you were a student teacher".

This is after learning musical instruments since the age of 7, achieving Grade 8 distinction in all three, before achieving a first at the top music university at the time, Manchester. I have sung in choirs, barbershop, solo and jazz. I have played trombone in small and big jazz bands, orchestras and musical theatre, both paid and unpaid. I have sung in a choir with Hans Zimmer on his World Tour, played Chopin's C Minor Nocturne off by heart to 500 people at 24 hours notice, and performed Harrison Birtwhistle's Silbury Air to the composer himself for his 80th birthday. (If you're interested, I can also teach you how to rap - my final essay at university was on Public Enemy, the first political hip hop group)!

Back to teaching. The central factor that has been repeated to me throughout my training is that I understand people: how to communicate, how to explain complex ideas, and how to make them feel comfortable.

I know how to adapt to the person in front of me, and have been able to do it when there have been 16 or 32 people in front of me, even those who don't care very much initially. To adapt, I listen. What do you want to learn? Why do you think you can't do that? Okay, let's start with what you can do. Some people need more instruction, some people need more room to breath. Some students needed a telling off, others needed an arm round the shoulder. Whatever it is, I have a natural ability to translate that into effective teaching, and there are few things in the world that I enjoy doing more.

Every student can succeed, and I throw my all into ensuring that happens.

Yes. I am less experienced in this but I am very tech savvy and would be more than happy to teach online. I would strongly advise piano and trombone lessons in person due to the specifics of physical technique, but I am happy to give it a shot!

The front living room of my house has a huge bay window that can be opened to allow adequate airflow.

Services

Tailor your learning to the music you love with a fully qualified teacher. ASAP.

You choose the style, I'll bring the technique. Because, without the second, you can't succeed at the first.

Whether you're looking for lessons for your children, your parents, friends or even your dog, I have experienced teaching all ages and backgrounds.

Okay...forget the dogs, but however you arrive at your first lesson, I will build a bespoke learning programme that prioritises your comfort and enjoyment as we adventure through the challenging technique and disciplines that everyone needs to master the piano.

So, tell me - where do you want to begin?

Let's get cracking.

Your voice is precious. And it is significantly linked to your physical and mental wellbeing.

My lessons will be bespoke to your needs and goals, or those of the one you're looking to organise lessons for.

Whether you want to learn to sing or to rap, it will be my job to bring the tools and techniques you need to feel comfortable and confident as an artist.

I don't care if you're tone deaf, barely know what a rhyme is or if you've never so much as hummed.

Singing is liberating, beautifully human, and exceptional for your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Rapping is modern day poetry. A tool for powerful self-expression and joyfully endless possibilities.

Whatever age, background or experience, you are welcome.

Let's get cracking.

What do I mean by theory? Well, firstly, anything that isn't practical. Secondly, it's up to you.

Need help understanding how to read music? Awesome. Understanding harmony? Perfect. Aural skills (listening, intervals, pitch)? Don't forget your ears. Exploring a particularly niche area you're interested in? Try me.

Whether you're a hard-working teenager who needs help with notation and wants to know how to write a funk track.

Or an A Level student who wants some back up on that tricky set work you're studying.

Or a curious post-schooler with an interest in the socio-political landscape of hip hop in the early 1990s.

I will build our lessons around what you need. 1 hour at a time. So, that's where our conversation starts...

Let's get cracking.

Composing isn't easy - even the most experienced musicians struggle. So, we'll take it step by step, with a target defined by you and a route mapped out by me.

Composition requires theory, playing, listening and creativity.

All of which can be learnt, and your 30 or 60 minute lessons will be a combination of these four quarters.

If you're a beginner when it comes to theory, then I would recommend combining your composition lessons with the theory lessons I offer. Similarly, if you don't play piano, consider combining composition with piano.

Most importantly, bring your passion, your creativity and any prior knowledge you have with you, and you'll be writing music of your own in no time.

Start playing the greatest instrument ever created with a fully qualified teacher. ASAP.

Your lessons will be built around a central theme. That the best way to play is to love what you're playing.

Technique is foundational. Understanding is essential. And, I will always tailor the lessons to your preference and passion.

But the reason I continued playing trombone in orchestras across the country wasn't those things. It was the sheer love of the instrument.

The sound, the creative potential and the awesome experience of playing trombone - together, we'll go on an adventure with the grandest, loudest, most powerful instrument in the orchestra. To learn to play it and, if I've done my job, love playing it!

Let's get cracking.
