Excellent customer service. I have decided at the age of 34 years to learn an instrument and needed advice with purchasing an ukulele. The shop assistant (sorry don't know name) was very friendly and patient with explaining the different instruments in a clear way and whilst I'm a novice, I didn't feel patronised. I returned back to the store and purchased an ukulele in part because of the great customer service. I did visit a competitor, however, they didn't go the extra mile that Hickies did. Also, Hickies offer additional services such as able to put buttons on the uke if you need to wear a strap whilst the other music store in town wouldn't! I highly recommend Hickies. More...

I bought a bass guitar from them at May, and the day before, I just came in and said "I'd like to learn bass and I'd like a beginner bass please". Because I had no idea about brands, specs or anything at the time, they recommended a seriously good allrounder SR300EB. They could have shown me a branded expensive low quality bass, but they had a certain clarity that the bass I now have was the right choice. I go in now and then to get picks, strings and other stuff, or to just play around with the nicest bass there, A Fender American Deluxe Dimension in black (its the only model of it's colour I can find in Reading so stay away!!) which I hope to the heavens nobody notices it's beauty.I'd love to show anyone starting on any instrument this place. 6 out of 5. I recently purchased a Player Series Telecaster from Hickies and had great help in deciding which guitar to get. Unfortunately we both overlooked a small crack in the lacquer behind the neck and I phoned up when I noticed at home. Duncan was great and reassured me they'd get it replaced as soon as the model was in stock - even let me keep the old one while they ordered it in. Picked up the new one today with no hassle. It's was a pleasure for me and my family to meet Mr. Hickies. We visited his music store to have a look at pianos. Mr. Hickies gave us options that we didn't know. His store is a family company and the people there very polite and friendly with the customers. After 5 days the piano was delivered to our address! A hidden gem of a music shop tucked away down a back street you will have to check opening times to catch it open I think the owners probably work full time somewhere else to help fund keeping the store open as they obviously don't make enough to keep it open full time it's more of a helpful hobbies shop than a highly profitable business

Hickies stands out as one of very few establishments in this day and age that truly puts its customers first. We have been with them for some years now and the experience has always been warm, personal and engaging (especially William - one of the owners). We've always felt the information/guidance that we received was independent and unbiased towards any particular brand whilst also genuinely tailored to our situation. I cannot recommend them highly enough for making any musical purchase (large or small) especially if you are just starting on your musical journey and would like the ability to explore upgrades as you (or your children) become more proficient.
