How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
A building owner is allowed under 'permitted development,' to convert their loft space up to 40 cubic meters in a terrace house, and up to 50 cubic meters in a semidetached house, without 'planning permission.' Flats do require planning permission from the local authority. All houses within conservation areas as well as houses with 'Article 4' restrictions, also require planning permission from the local authority. Most lofts are suitable for conversion, provided the floor to ridge height is at least 2.2m. However, in most cases the ceiling can be lowered in order to accommodate for a new loft conversion.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Regardless of whether you are having a roof light conversion, or a dormer, mansard or hip to gable conversion, the stages can be basically defined in the following way;
1). Erect scaffolding
2). Create external roof opening
3). Fit steel beams
4). Remove rear rafters to enable new dormer/mansard
5). Create internal opening for stairs
6). Electrics & plumbing
7). External guttering & weather proofing of new dormer/mansard
