It needs to transmit your 'why'. By this, I mean your purpose and why is it that your clients/visitors need to spend some time browsing through your site.
The content needs to be relevant and original so that it keeps your audiences interested.
The navigation needs to be clear and depending on the purpose easy to 'convert', 'subscribe', 'follow' or 'make a purchase' of a product.
Needless to say that it needs to be aesthetically pleasing.
