David has been volunteering as a photographer for the public sculpture aspect of the Art UK Sculpture Project. Our remit is to record, and photograph, the diverse range of monuments and sculpture in the cities, towns and villages of the whole of the UK. The requirements of the project, in terms of the photography, are complex. The photographer not only needs to demonstrate the necessary technical skills, but also an appreciation of the optimum way of capturing a work of art through imagery. Sculpture, because it is three dimensional in the landscape, and relates specifically to mass and form, is difficult to ‘visually describe’ using photographs. David has managed to demonstrate his understanding of the needs of the project, in terms of the variable number of documentary style images that we require, yet at the same time, taking some aesthetically beautiful photographs of public sculpture.
