What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Communication and simplicity. The most important step is listening to the client to understand what images they want and what they will be used for. After we are clear about the brief we can shoot in a style that is appropriate for the job - natural or strobe, studio or location, point of view or observer and so on. The images themselves work best when they are clear, un-fussy, well balanced and able to get a message across without unnecessary or confusing elements.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
The three key questions I would ask are; what the images are going to be used for, what style of photography they require - often mood boards or examples are useful if the client has a exemplar in mind, and what the timescale is.
What do you love most about your job?
The variation - I could be photographing a ship at sea one day and care home the next, but every job has the same challenge; to give the client what they expect and to exceed that to give them more than just the brief.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Photography is in my blood, my wife is a photographer, my father was a photographer and it is the only job I've ever wanted or done.
