Tree Surgery & Removal

Sam and his colleague were very professional. They turned up on time and felled a large conker tree which was unfortunately not well. They subsequently cleaned up the whole work area. I would recommend Sam. More...

Services

Here at Burley Tree Services, we offer expert tree surgery services in Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and across the South East of England. We serve both domestic and commercial customers with the following tree care services:

reserving healthy trees is very important to us, but sometimes removal is the only option.

There are many reasons why tree removal may be needed, these include:

Damage - a tree may need to be removed because it has died or been irreparably damaged by storm or lightning strike.

Disease - removal may be the only option if the tree has a bacterial or fungal disease, such as ash dieback. Removal will stop the disease from spreading further.

Subsidence - if the tree in question has been planted too close to a building, the root network may undermine the stability of the soil and foundations of the building.

Safety - if the stability of a tree is in question then it may be safer to remove it before it falls and causes damage to life or buildings.

Impacting surroundings - the tree may have outgrown its location and be causing a loss of amenity, light or view.

When you choose Burley Tree Services, you can be assured that our qualified team will work in a professional manner. We always conform to strict health and safety standards, in compliance with industry guidance and legislation.

Often the stump of a felled tree can be left in the ground without causing too much of a problem. However, sometimes there is a good reason why stump removal is necessary, this includes:

when the stump is in a location where planting is required

sites where the stump will be in the way of turf, hard surfacing, building works or fencing

to avoid the remaining stump - if dead - from decaying and contaminating surrounding soil

to avoid the living stump from forming shoots or suckers

purely for aesthetic reasons

Trees may grow until they eventually become too large or weighty for their surrounding environment. Crown reduction is a method of pruning the leafy canopy area in order to manage the tree, to ensure that it is healthy, safe and aesthetically pleasing.

Crown reduction is carried out to address a number of issues:

Aesthetics - tree crown reduction can be used to reduce the height or width of the tree while retaining a pleasing and natural shape

Health - to reduce excess weight and stress on particular branches, especially in high winds

Light loss - thinning the canopy will help, if it is casting too much shade over a building or garden

Damage - crown reduction will limit any interference of tree branches with nearby buildings, utilities or other trees

Here at Burley Tree Services, we have the skill and experience to carry out safe and effective crown reduction works.

Crown lifting is a method of pruning the lower branches of the leafy canopy area. This action manages the tree, to ensure that it is healthy, safe and aesthetically pleasing.

Crown lifting offers a number of benefits:

Clearance - if the lower crown comes into contact with a building or obstructs access, crown lifting will help

Circulation - improved air circulation will benefit lawns and plants growing beneath the tree

Access - in certain situations, the land owner is obligated to ensure free passage beneath the trees/s, e.g. on public highways or footpaths

Visibility - removing or thinning lower branches can open up a view

Light - crown lifting can boost light levels in gardens and properties

Our skilled and experienced team can carry out careful and effective crown lifting services to manage your trees.

Some of the most common reasons for crown thinning are:

Light - to allow more light to pass through the tree

Stability - thinning reduces wind resistance and the weight load on branches

Health - we can remove dead, diseased weak or overhanging branches

Strength - thinning can benefit the tree by improving its structure

Our knowledgeable team can carry out crown thinning services - alongside lifting and reduction - to ensure your trees are at their healthiest and most resilient.

Pollarding is usually carried out in winter when the leaves have fallen and it is easier to see the shape and structure of the branches. Pollarding at this time also minimises the chances of infected pruning cuts and other stresses to the tree.

Pollarding is used for several reasons, including:

Control - pollarding prevents trees from outgrowing their allocated space

Light - this form of pruning will reduce the shade cast by the tree’s crown

Clearance - pollarding may be used on trees in urban areas to prevent overhead cables or streetlights from being obstructed

Health - regular pollarding can help to rejuvenate and strengthen the tree and extend its life

Our team of qualified tree surgeons can carry out pollarding alongside a range of other tree services.

Coppicing is a traditional method that is used to manage woodland areas. It was originally a means of producing a continual and reliable source of timber.

Woodland coppicing involves selectively cutting down young trees to approximately 12 inches above ground level. This process is repeated on a regular basis. The coppiced trees have established root networks, meaning that regrowth is quicker and more likely to be strong and healthy when compared to planting a sapling.

The best time to coppice trees is late winter into early spring, just before they come into active growth. This method is ideal for smaller areas of woodland and various deciduous species can be coppiced, including alder, ash, beech, birch, hazel, oak and willow.

Hedges are often found at the boundaries of a property and - when neat - can also form an attractive natural privacy screen.

We recommend careful regular hedge trimming to keep your hedges in a tidy and healthy condition.

When you choose us, we will remove excess overgrowth and reshape your hedge, as well as removing any diseased or dead sections. We have the skills to expertly trim your hedge and shrubs into the desired height and shape.

As qualified tree surgeons, we can provide efficient land clearance services to remove trees, tree stumps, hedges and other vegetation.

Once trees and vegetation have been removed from the ground, we will transfer the waste from your site and dispose of it carefully.

Deadwood describes the dead limbs and branches on a tree. Branches may die off due to a number of reasons, including:

Age - natural ageing can lead to deadwood

Shade - a dense canopy may cause a lack of light which kills off lower branches or inner crown, typically in broadleaf species

Surplus - pines and spruces kill off their lower branches as they become surplus to requirement

Invasion - pests or parasites cause disease

Root damage - honey fungus can spread disease from the roots

Our deadwooding service involves assessing the tree in question and then removing or shortening certain dead branches from the canopy to reduce the risk of them falling.

We are passionate about the natural environment and are dedicated to tree care and sustainable woodland management practices. Tree planting is a rewarding part of our work and we are always happy to offer advice and guidance.

Planting trees requires careful consideration and it is essential that you choose the right species for the location, climate, soil and light conditions. Get it wrong and you could adversely impact nearby buildings and surrounding planting.

Our team is experienced in planting a broad range of tree species, shapes and sizes - from tiny saplings to more established specimens.

Once your trees are successfully established, we offer a range of ongoing care and maintenance services to ensure that they thrive, including:

Crown reduction

Crown thinning

Crown lifting

Pollarding

Coppicing

There are many reasons why your wooded land will benefit from the regular maintenance of professional woodland management services, including:

Health - a defined management plan with regular care will ensure that your woodland can thrive and flourish

Wildlife - a well managed wood will encourage wildlife and boost biodiversity

Productive - coppicing and other strategies can be used to obtain a sustainable supply of timber

Aesthetics - woodland management will ensure that your wooded area is visually appealing and can be enjoyed for recreational purposes
