Design attracts and directs. Images enliven and inspire. But it's words that empathise, encourage and explain. Together these three tell the stories you want to tell about your business to create new customers and build relationships with those you already know.
As Wrightwell Editorial Services I focus on the words. With decades of experience in copywriting, editing and journalism, I can help you shape your content to maximise its value for you and your clients.
With a background in marketing and journalism, I understand why you need good stories and how to write them in a way that supports all the other demands on marketing content such as branding, SEO and analytics.

What do you love most about your job?
I love getting into conversations with people about their businesses and turning what I hear into words that really resonate with their customers. I listen and I ask questions too, so that I understand exactly who the target audience is and why they would buy from this client. Then I use the skills and experience I've gained over numerous years of working with organisations of all sizes and in many markets to create copy that works. It's much more than just going through a process - it's incredibly refreshing to hear people share their enthusiasm and knowledge and play my part in sharing that with the world.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Being employed gave me great opportunities to learn formally about sales, marketing and journalism. But working in structured organisations contains your enthusiasm. Career development and personal growth just didn't happen fast enough. Stepping outside and building my own business has been exciting and fulfilling as well as offering a more flexible approach to the working day. I've worked with a huge number of interesting people and I've continued to learn as I've worked. And to be honest, it's great to be in my own home office. When I take a break, I can multi-task. Drink coffee and pick beans from the garden.
Why should our clients choose you?
My long-term experience in the copywriting business has given me a wealth of knowledge that I share with clients as I work on their projects. I've worked with agencies and directly with clients from global corporations to individuals. I've got market knowledge in a diverse range of areas, including technology, retail, healthcare and eldercare. I build and enjoy long-term relationships with many clients, ensuring that we have a swift and effective process for briefings and turning around copy. And that copy can be anything from a large website to a short video script, a case study series to a newsletter, or a marketing campaign to blogs. Whatever the project, I have never missed an agreed deadline. As well as copywriting, I understand about branding, marketing and content challenges and regularly provide input into the process of defining a brand, creating a style and managing a programme. It's my breadth and depth of experience as well as my ability to write that makes me a reliable and successful choice.
Freelance copywriting for marketing and branding
Making every word count in your marketing communications, from websites to newsletters, brochures to case studies, and white papers to sales guides. I can work as part of your team within your business or with your agency. With decades of experience working with marketing, branding, PR, web and design agencies and well as inhouse marketing departments, I can easily slot into your team. And I've not missed a deadline yet.
Ideal for small- to medium-sized businesses. The longer you're in business, the more knowledge you have to refine your target market and the products and services you are offering. With my website refresh service we'll analyse your ideal customer, their needs and aspirations, and how you can answer those desires with your offerings. We can also look at how you talk to your customers and how you can make the most of every bit of content you create. I can deliver refreshed content to match your current website design or work with your designer on a complete revamp.
Newsletter writing and editing
If you're creating a regular business newsletter it may be hard to find inhouse people with the skill and time to bring it all together. I can work with you to plan the content, interview time-constrained experts and write articles, edit contributed pieces and ensure that the whole newsletter is consistent and reflects your brand guidelines. I can manage the entire process from first contact to approval too.
If you want blogs that give your readers real value, I can help. Rather than making a swift sweep of the Internet to rehash what's been said before, I like to find fresh ideas and inspiration from within your organisation. I'll look at your communications from white papers to conference videos to pull out important and helpful information and turn them into blogs that support and reflect your brand. And whenever I can I'll interview your experts quickly and painlessly to find all those nuggets of knowledge that can make your business stand out. Whatever the size of your business, from entrepreneurial to multi-national, I can write articles that resonate with your audience and draw them into your marketing funnel.
Wrightwell Editorial Services
From 1986 to present.
As a freelance writer and editor I've worked with agencies and businesses of all sizes in both the B2B and B2C arenas. I've developed long-term relationships with many clients who enjoy the benefit of a reliable on-call copywriter who knows their business and can turn around copy on time and to budget. At the same time I'm practised at getting to know a business fast to create the content it needs for a one-off project.
Content director and co-founder
When They Get Older
From 2011 to present.
Managing a website full of useful blogs for people helping to support ageing friends and relatives. As content director I commission contributions on chosen subjects, work with contributors to ensure that every article is full of helpful knowledge, write articles, and edit every piece to the same style and tone to make them consistent and easy to read.
Journalist and editor
Butterworth Scientific/IPC Business Press
From 1981 to 1986.
From trainee journalist to magazine editor, I learned the skills of asking, listening, writing, editing and commissioning with a major publisher. Completing the inhouse training courses and working hands-on gave me a full appreciation of how to tell stories succinctly and clearly as well as translating the technical into understandable language.
Sales and marketing
From 1976 to 1979.
As a graduate trainee I learned the important basics of communicating with customers, listening to their challenges, and explaining the features, advantages and benefits of solutions. Always remember to put yourself in the shoes of the customer and ask yourself "So what?"
New website bringing two companies together
Two large and culturally different companies in different parts of the world were being integrated by their parent. I worked with the appointed marketing agency to create a website that satisfied all internal stakeholders while being accessible to customers around the globe. This involved interviewing team members in the US and Europe to create stories that underpinned the brand, developed the words for the website, created the content for the introductory newsletter and contributed to the branding book.
Rethinking a marketing campaign for greater value
Initially asked to proofread a one-off mailshot for a client, I was able to demonstrate how the content could be used in a much more valuable way. I reshaped the content into an e-brochure that can be sent to any contacts during the campaign or later as the content has a long shelf life. I then created an email campaign of five email shots which were delivered on a fortnightly basis, with a call to action of requesting the brochure, watching an already-available video - and contacting the client for further information about how they could work together. This enabled the client to get much more value out of the content they had already begun to create.
Refreshing the website of a growing business
One of the packages I offer small and medium businesses is the opportunity to review and refresh the content of their website to see how relevant it is to how they are doing business today. Growing businesses evolve rapidly as owners discover what brings success and which clients they really want to target. I recently worked with a client who thought she knew her target market, but after working through my programme realised that she wasn't focusing on her ideal customer. Only once we had clarified who would bring her greatest income and how she could attract those customers through her unique selling points was it actually time to sit down and write the words.
