What do you love most about your job?

I love getting into conversations with people about their businesses and turning what I hear into words that really resonate with their customers. I listen and I ask questions too, so that I understand exactly who the target audience is and why they would buy from this client. Then I use the skills and experience I've gained over numerous years of working with organisations of all sizes and in many markets to create copy that works. It's much more than just going through a process - it's incredibly refreshing to hear people share their enthusiasm and knowledge and play my part in sharing that with the world.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Being employed gave me great opportunities to learn formally about sales, marketing and journalism. But working in structured organisations contains your enthusiasm. Career development and personal growth just didn't happen fast enough. Stepping outside and building my own business has been exciting and fulfilling as well as offering a more flexible approach to the working day. I've worked with a huge number of interesting people and I've continued to learn as I've worked. And to be honest, it's great to be in my own home office. When I take a break, I can multi-task. Drink coffee and pick beans from the garden.

My long-term experience in the copywriting business has given me a wealth of knowledge that I share with clients as I work on their projects. I've developed long-term relationships with many clients who enjoy the benefit of a reliable on-call copywriter who knows their business and can turn around copy on time and to budget. At the same time I'm practised at getting to know a business fast to create the content it needs for a one-off project.

As content director I commission contributions on chosen subjects, work with contributors to ensure that every article is full of helpful knowledge, write articles, and edit every piece to the same style and tone to make them consistent and easy to read.

Completing the inhouse training courses and working hands-on gave me a full appreciation of how to tell stories succinctly and clearly as well as translating the technical into understandable language.

As a graduate trainee I learned the important basics of communicating with customers, listening to their challenges, and explaining the features, advantages and benefits of solutions. Always remember to put yourself in the shoes of the customer and ask yourself "So what?"

Projects

New website bringing two companies together

Two large and culturally different companies in different parts of the world were being integrated by their parent. I worked with the appointed marketing agency to create a website that satisfied all internal stakeholders while being accessible to customers around the globe. This involved interviewing team members in the US and Europe to create stories that underpinned the brand, developed the words for the website, created the content for the introductory newsletter and contributed to the branding book.

Rethinking a marketing campaign for greater value

Initially asked to proofread a one-off mailshot for a client, I was able to demonstrate how the content could be used in a much more valuable way. I reshaped the content into an e-brochure that can be sent to any contacts during the campaign or later as the content has a long shelf life. I then created an email campaign of five email shots which were delivered on a fortnightly basis, with a call to action of requesting the brochure, watching an already-available video - and contacting the client for further information about how they could work together. This enabled the client to get much more value out of the content they had already begun to create.

Refreshing the website of a growing business

One of the packages I offer small and medium businesses is the opportunity to review and refresh the content of their website to see how relevant it is to how they are doing business today. Growing businesses evolve rapidly as owners discover what brings success and which clients they really want to target. I recently worked with a client who thought she knew her target market, but after working through my programme realised that she wasn't focusing on her ideal customer. Only once we had clarified who would bring her greatest income and how she could attract those customers through her unique selling points was it actually time to sit down and write the words.
