What i cant understand is how the filmmakers seemingly ignored the books most obviously cinematic content. So world war z is a third person shooter made for four player co op in a l4d ish way, sending folks through levels to shoot zombies complete with l4d y special zombs and not die. Sure, you wont get to fulfill your fantasy of controlling a virtual brad pitt, but this type of freeform narrative allows the development team to experiment with new environments and tell a handful of more bite sized stories, as opposed to having to keep the player focused on one protracted narrative. These are in fact veteran developers who have worked on some of the biggest shooters out there.
