Q&As

Of course, without a trained eye, a thorough knowledge of the techniques, the proper equipment, and the experience to understand how to approach different types of projects, the photographer is basically unprepared and will be unable to satisfy their clients. Built on top of this, the secret to taking a great photograph is multi-faceted; it requires a thorough understanding of who your target audience is, what their expectations are, what the images will be used for, and what their budget is. Without understanding these facets of a project, you have no idea a) what your vision should be, b) whether your vision matches what the client wants, and c) whether your vision will provide a satisfactory product for your client.

1) What is your budget? Not trolling to see how much we can get away charging... that kind of photographer never lasts long in this business. Without an understanding of your budget, we cannot really begin to create a vision for what will satisfy your requirements, nor will we have any idea of whether what you need will even be feasible with what you have to spend.
2) How will you be using these images? Online only? Magazine or marcom?
3) What size will the finished images be? Is this for a billboard? Business card? A fine art portrait for your living room wall?
4) Who will the audience for these images be? General public? Vertical market? Family & friends?
5) What style are you looking for? Editorial Portrait? Family Portrait? Business portrait? Environmental portrait? etc. It makes a difference in how we approach the project.

I love creating. I love the variety... with this kind of job, I'm doing family portraits on Monday, product photography on Tuesday, editorial work for a magazine on Thursday, a Senior session on Friday, and a wedding on Saturday. What's not to love?

I've always been an entrepreneur at heart. I've hundreds of offers over the course of my 37-year career to work for other firms... I guess I just enjoy the freedom creating my own vision.

There are a number of reasons... in my service area, quite simply, I'm the best at what I do. I'm not in it for the money... I'm in it for the satisfaction. If I were in it for the money, I'd charge a LOT more than what I do. I'm meticulous about quality, and bend over backwards to please my clients. My "Top Pro" status on Thumbtack was not purchased... it was earned. You have to have a 4.85 star rating out of 5 stars to qualify for it... I'm very proud of that.
