As a general contractor, it can be challenging bringing a designer’s vision into reality; the opposite is true for Urrutia Design. Working with Urrutia Design has always been a pleasure and every job we have worked on together has turned out great. They have well thought-out designs that are creative, realistic and unique and I can tell they keep the builder in mind when they are creating ideas. They are organized, thorough with planning, responsive and well versed with the products being used. I have several projects coming up with Urrutia and I am excited to get started. More...

Jason Urrutia and Martha Carvalho are simply amazing to work with. I can't say enough about their expertise and ability to understand the preference and goals of their clients and turn them into reality. Both Jason and Martha are true professionals but also fun to work with. We are undertaking a fairly substantial remodel and have been working with Urrutia Design for a number of months. We live in a traditional home that needs updating but we don't want to lose the original tone of the house. With Jason and Martha's guidance we are going to end up with an amazing space that respects the original architecture. We know what we like but could never do what we are doing without the guidance and expertise of Jason and Martha. And their designs are not cookie cutter, true originals. If you are looking for a design firm that really truly knows their space, look no further than Urrutia Design. More...

Jason and Martha were recommended to us by friends who had used them to design their whole house remodel. We had done some work with a number of other architects in a previous house and found Jason and Martha a freshing change from them. From the first discussion they did a great job listening to what we wanted and helped us narrow our scope to fit to our budget. In addition they challenged a number of our preconceived wants from the project in a way that was never anything less than pleasant and educational (from our side). All of the decisions we have come to thus far feel fully informed and well debated. We have finished the initial design phase, are in the midst of strucutral, soils and mechanical engineering work and hope to head into our initial bidding process after the holiday. Once we are further along we will add to our review. More...

I have worked on about 10 projects with Urrutia Design over the past few years and each time has been a pleasure. They do what they say they are going to do and they do it when they say they will. I highly recommend them.

Hiring Jason and Martha was the best decision that I made in the scope of our entire renovation, and I have Houzz to thank for it. I searched the professional listings for local interior designers and discovered that Urrutia Design was in our area and responsible for three of the inspiration photos that I'd saved to an ideabook I'd made for my project. Seriously, it felt like fate.

Jason and Martha have impeccable taste and incredible ability to envision how a space should be reconfigured and redesigned. They were friendly and easy to work with, even when there were times when the budget did not allow for us to fully follow through with their design as they - and we - would have liked. They were flexible in coming up with creative solutions and helping us prioritize, and I especially appreciated the times that they sat us down, explained the motivations behind their design choices, and were straight about the negative ramifications when we were about to deviate from their designed specs. Their honest guidance and advice helped us reach a better result than I could have imagined, and I know for sure that I will be contacting Urrutia Design first and foremost for any projects in the future.

Martha and Jason have been an enormous help to us, finding the right design and approach to the remodel of our 1945 cottage/cabin in Sausalito. We needed to update an outdated kitchen, open up rooms while keeping a cozy feel, and add more storage for our family. They are highly creative in their solutions, hearing what we want and need and making sure it honors the spirit of the house. They also offered sound and reasonable advice to get us where we needed to be. We had spent about two years mulling options and they quickly sorted through what we said to come up with a design. They listened to both me and my husband, and helped us find a gorgeous, workable solution that we love! They are very down to earth and you know you are receiving customized care just for your project. They know their stuff! They are steeped and experienced in both architecture and design, and present a holistic, integrated architectural and design solution. They are SO easy to work with and competitive in their rates. They are also an enormous wealth of information in helping to source reasonably priced, and highly-skilled contractors. They are great to work with and most of all, created a design for us that we BOTH LOVE! More...

We love our new home! Jason and Martha helped us completely redesign the structure, finishes and flow of our house, including vaulting the ceilings, moving walls and incorporating a previously-built separate addition into the main body of the house. Their attention to detail shows in every room in details of the trim, the tile patterns and color combinations. The result is a welcoming, comfortable home with a consistent design that invites the outdoors in. More...

Martha and Jason of Urrutia design are fantastic at what they do. We reunited two apartments in our 1914 Edwardian back to one home; you would never know it had ever ben divided. Their ability to honor the roots and style of a home yet make it modern, beautiful and livable make them a unique talent. We couldn't be happier with our home and look forward to working with Urrutia on future projects! More...

Urrutia Design has been an absolutely essential partner as my husband and I prepared for our first major home remodel. They have impeccable taste and really took the time to get to know us, our style and what we needed out of our remodel project. Urrutia essentially operates as a one stop shop: they coordinate geo and engineering experts, draft architecture plans, put together permit packages for the town, deliver detailed construction plans to the contractor, offer a complete design & vision package... their knowledge & experience make them absolutely essential partners and I have appreciated working them every step of the way. Thanks so much, Jason and Martha! More...

Q&As

1) We'll visit with you on site, get to know you and your home, talk with you about your goals and provide some spontaneous design ideas regarding how to transform your home. The meeting will give you an idea of how we'll approach your project, along with a potential project timeline and fees.

2) This is the initial phase of the project where we explore the many possibilities for the transformation of your home. This exploration is based on our initial site visit and follow up conversations regarding direction, design theme, finishes, use, etc. We use imagery and sketches to convey design intent. This phase typically involves the manipulation of existing floor plans showing direction for the new use of spaces. It can also include sketches showing alterations to the exterior elevations, site plan and interior spaces. We often rely on 3D renderings to bring even more clarity to the design direction.

3) Once the Conceptual Design/Design Development Phase is completed we begin work on Construction Documents. These computer generated drawings include technical details that will be submitted to your local planning or building department. If the project is of a larger scale, we'll submit to the planning department first. Once the general plan is approved, we'll generate the necessary additional documents for your building permit set. These are the drawings that will allow you to obtain your building permit.

Along with creating your Construction Documents, we'll need to create Interior Drawings of spaces within the project. Depending on the scope of work, Interior Drawings are typically provided for, but not limited to, Kitchens and Bathrooms. However, they can also include Bookshelves, a new Fireplace, Laundry Room, etc. These Drawings will give a more informative view of these spaces and provide necessary details for your contractor to properly build and carry out our intended design.

4) During the Conceptual Design and Design & Development phases we get an idea of not only how the house will function, but what it will look like. Running concurrent with the Construction Documents/Interior Drawings phase, we'll finalize all materials and finishes for your project. This is the "Selection of Finishes." In this phase we'll organize finishes per space and present them in a manner that makes sense to both you and your contractor. This will also allow you to see all of the finishes together, with simple, yet critical information. This information will contain color, size, vendor, price, quantity, etc.

5) Once construction of your project has been completed you'll receive notification from the Building Department that the work has been done in compliance with your design team and governing building codes. The project is now "final" and you are ready to enjoy your recently renovated space(s). Congratulations!

Thank you for taking the time to understand how we work. If we can answer any additional questions please give us a call. We'll look forward to speaking with you about your project! And in review of our Process we've placed below some simple examples showing the typical steps taken from the beginning of the conceptual design to the completed space.

Additionally, you can visit our website for additional information re the process. This includes before & after photos and examples of conceptual drawings and submittal sets... https://www.urrutiadesign.com/process

We cater to all design styles and enjoy the creative challenge of "refreshing" a home while not compromising the integrity of the original architecture. If a client prefers to something more personable and dramatic, like altering the original style of the home, we are also happy to help them with their own unique dream and journey.

The best part of the job is having a great working relationship with the client, ultimately resulting in a great project. This entails having a true understanding of the client's wishes, bringing new and sensible ideas to the table, gaining the trust of the client, building the necessary foundation to move forward resulting in the most beneficial transformation of the client's home.

Simple. We wanted to have complete control of our interactions with our clients allowing us to provide the truest design approach to their projects.

Finding the right home designer is the most important aspect of this journey. It sets the tone for all things to come. Basically, we're a one-stop-shop. From first meeting to project completion, we form a relationship with you that's built on sensibility and trust. And it's that trust that will create a very successful transformation of your home.

In short, we'll visit your home and listen carefully to your goals. We set in motion a design language for your design by providing design options at every corner. We discuss the pros and cons of all options and help you set a cohesive design that make spaces seamlessly relate to one another. This will make for a much improved home while also better protecting your real estate investment. And, if you change your mind about certain design elements, we can make those changes quickly to keep things moving! We're always available to our clients (text, email, phone) to answer questions that you may have.

We'll help you navigate through the contractor selection/bidding and always be available for quick interaction with your contractor to help with additional information and timing. We want you to have a smooth ride and get you back in your new home as soon as possible. It's important to be able to enjoy this experience as well as your new home!

Absolutely! A lot of our work and interaction with local clients is done via phone, as well as with emails containing design photos, interior drawings, hand sketches, 3D models, links to furniture/materials/specifications, etc. And with working around Covid we've been forced to work remotely even more often with our local clients. So we've essentially been refining our remote work skills for 2 and a half years.

With clients that are not local, we have a blue print for navigating this type of relationship and distance. And to further ensure that we stay on the same page with all aspects of our design, we communicate more often with them.

Covid has been challenging for all of us and maintaining safety has been our primary concern when interacting in person with our clients. When on site visits or meeting with vendors/municipalities/tradespeople we wear a protective mask and request proper ventilation and fresh air at all times. We've also relied more on outdoor meetings or phone meetings as an alternative to meeting indoors. Zoom has also become a big part of our practice.
