COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS Communicating and Influencing As a Wine Consultant with an international company I communicated with more senior managers (face to face, e-mail, telephone) to encourage the establishment of more effective methods of informing consultants about the availability of wines. While at county shows I had to be able to create effective rapport with people on the spot and ensure the area was presentable at all times, no matter what the weather. Being able to communicate with clients and listen to their requirements is an essential skill. Using knowledge of their previous purchases I may introduce them to alternative wines which in turn broadens my sales base. The biggest challenge as a Nightline Counsellor was learning to listen in order to establish rapport with distraught students. I developed strong communication skills when dealing with potential suicides on the end of a telephone. As water front manager in Camp Conrri, after an argument with a rather large poisonous water snake whilst protecting the children, I discovered that in extremis killing something is the best form of communication. Managing Customers As a Wine Consultant I managed and maintained a client base. This meant that expectations regarding personal service were fulfilled as well as dealing with any issues that might develop in regards to delivery. As a camp leader and lifeguard I introduced a complaints procedure for dealing with angry and upset customers. This involved ensuring that the staff always wore their name badges and allocating each complaint a specific number for tracking purposes. When dealing with injured members of the public I also ensured that family members were kept fully informed about what was being done in order to lessen their concerns.
