Welcome To Mauritius
Mauritius is located approximately 2000 kilometres south of the equator and approximately 900km east of Madagascar. Mauritius has pleasant weather all year round. Like in all tropical islands, the island is lush green and has colourful vegetation throughout the year. There are no well-defined wet and dry seasons, and visitors can have perfect holidays any time of the year. Since it is a tropical island in the Indian Ocean, there is not much variation in the weather during the year.
There are only two seasons in Mauritius, summer and winter. Summer is from November to April, when temperature is around 26°, and winter is from May to October, when temperature is around 22 °. The months of January and February are the warmest months; with temperatures hovering around 28°. Humidity is quite high during this time, particularly in the coastal areas. Mauritius experiences a lot of rainfall during this period and cyclones and tropical storms are pretty common. July is usually the coolest month of the year with an average temperature of 21°. Generally, the cooler months are the best time to visit to enjoy the tropical climate and white sandy beaches of Mauritius.
Leisure Activities in Mauritius
Surrounded by sandy white beaches, the tropical island of Mauritius offers great opportunities to relax and have fun. Water activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling keep visitors engaged. Almost every hotel or resort has a dive centre and provide all the needed equipment. Most of the snorkelling spots are close to the beach. Some of the well known sites are the Cathedral, Whale Rock and Roche Zozo.
Fishing, Sailing, Kayaking, water skiing and Surfing are also very popular with tourists. Sunset and starlight cruises are a wonderful way to relax. Paragliding is also available, an excellent way to enjoy the view. The beaches of Grand Baie and La Cuvette are fantastic for sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing. The tiny island of Ile aux Cerfs is a virtual paradise for all kinds of water sports. .
For avid bird watchers, there is the Casela Bird Park which encompasses a 20-acre stretch of parkland near the Black River District, and it is teeming with rare and exotic birds. Or visit Souillac, which offers a spectacular view of verdant gardens overlooking the sea.
Elegance Holidays Ltd has the great pleasure to welcome you in the west of the island.
What you will be able to see in the west of Mauritius.
Black River Gorges National Park
One of the main ‘green’ attractions is the Black River Gorges National Park, which extends over 16,680 acres and provides a haven to highly endangered native plants and animals. It plays home to around 311 species of native and endemic flowering plants and nine species of birds that can only be found in Mauritius.
Chamarel Coloured Earths
No one can categorically state why these undulating, dune-like knolls vary so wildly in colour. Some say the seven shades of earth were formed from volcanic ash deposits that cooled at different temperatures. Others believe that the colours of the mounds can be attributed to the differing quantity of metal oxide they each contain.
However people choose to interpret them, the Coloured Earths at Chamarel – just west of the Black River Gorges – are worth investigating. Note that they are especially breathtaking first thing in the morning, when the sun is at its brightest and the colours at their deepest.
Salt Pans, Tamarin
Owing to the exceptionally high level of sunshine over the district, Tamarin has become the heart of salt production in Mauritius. The Salt Pans make an interesting diversion if you happen to be in the area.
HERITAGE
Martello Tower, La Preuneuse
The Martello Tower at La Preuneuse was built by the British between 1810 and 1846 to protect them against their sworn enemy, the French navy. Since being restored in 1999, the tower is now accessible for guided tours.
Le Morne
In centuries past, the fissures of the eponymous basaltic rock that towers 556 metres above the Le Morne peninsula were famously used as a refuge by runaway slaves. Today, people come to Le Morne not only to witness the iconic rock – now listed as a World Heritage Site on account of its chequered past – but also to take advantage of the immaculate three-mile beach that stretches beneath it.
BEACHES
Enjoy magnificent sunsets or a dip in the calm, clear lagoon that surrounds Flic en Flac. Those looking for a more dramatic seascape should head for Tamarin or Le Morne further south.
The Elegance Holidays Ltd team can propose you to visit the east and the south east of the island. What can you see exactly?
NATURE
Grand River South East
Visitors and locals alike enjoy navigating along the mouth of the Grand River, swimming and diving under its waterfall or having a picnic on the riverbanks. Outings to this popular beauty-spot can be organised with local operators from the village of Trou d’Eau Douce.
Victoria 1840, Trou d'Eau Douce
Victoria 1840 is an old sugar cane factory, classified as part of Mauritian heritage in its own right, which has been converted to house a fabulous contemporary art museum and a delightful restaurant.
There are vast swathes of spotless sandy beach on the east coast, running all the way down from Belle Mare through to Trou d’Eau Douce. The gently undulating sand tracks along this stunning coastline are often used by joggers, if you fancy bringing your running shoes on holiday with you. Alternatively, take time out simply to enjoy the spectacular surroundings. The beaches on this side of the island are, after all, some of Mauritius’ finest.
The South & South-East - What to See?
HERITAGE
In and Around Mahébourg
There are many interesting sights to observe in and around Mahébourg, including the fascinating National History Museum – just south of the town – and the Naval Museum, which houses the bell retrieve from the shipwrecked St Géran, as well as other interesting nautical memorabilia.
Dutch Ruins and Frederik Hendrik Museum, Vieux Grand Port
At Vieux Grand Port, the oldest settlement in Mauritius, visitors can observe the ruins of the first Dutch fortifications. Those who are interested in Mauritius’ history will also enjoy the on-site Frederik Hendrik Museum, which retraces the occupation of Mauritius using visuals and excavated objects.
La Nef, Robert Edward Hart Museum
Although the primary reason most people visit La Nef is to learn about the Mauritian-Irish poet Robert Edward Hart, the building the museum is housed in is visually intriguing in its own right on account of it being covered in shells and coral. This, together with Hart’s fine writings and the fact that the museum is free to visit, makes it well worth a diversion.
BEACHES
There are several beautiful beaches in this part of Mauritius, including Blue Bay – popular with families – and Gris Gris: one of the few areas of Mauritian coastline that is not shielded by coral reef and is therefore the best point from which to observe dramatic waves crashing against the rocks.
The Elegance Holidays Ltd will be very happy to give you a quote for coming to visit around the sublime exotic island.

Welcome To The North Of Mauritius.
The northern coast of the island is the place where the most development has taken place in recent years. Thanks to this work, Grand Baie has an abundance of restaurants and discotheques. If you like to party to the sound of good music, you will find plenty of options to choose from here.
The north isn’t only about night life, however. It also boasts some of Mauritius’ best-loved sights, including the charming red-roofed church that overlooks the lagoon at Cap Malheureux.
SHOPSHOPING
Grand Baie and Pamplemousses
Anyone who loves boutiques should pay a visit to Sunset Boulevard in Grand Baie. Those who are interested in picking up local souvenirs, meanwhile, should head to Comptoir des Mascareignes in Pamplemousses, where they will find an assortment of handicrafts, gift stands, local fashions, ship and plane models, paintings and jewellery. Pamplemousses is also the base for Maritime Models Co. Ltd – a locally renowned manufacturer of model ship and sailing-related souvenirs.
SPORTS
Sailing
Grand Baie is the Mauritian centre for sailing activities. Visitors can join a yacht tour, a catamaran cruise or even charter a private launch here. Conditions for sailing are usually excellent and yachts can be chartered to cruise around Mauritius or to visit some of the northern offshore islands.
Kite-Surfing
Perhaps a little less well-known than Le Morne or Belle Mare, there are still some wonderful spots for adventurous kite-surfers to practise their skills in the north of Mauritius – particularly around Cap Malheureux and Anse La Raie.
Scuba Diving
The north is arguably one of the best places to scuba dive in Mauritius. There are a range of exciting options available to both beginners and more advanced divers. Of these, some of the most popular are: Gunner’s Coin (26 metres in depth) where big parrotfish can be spotted during each dive; Whale Rock (26 to 38 metres in depth), where you might be lucky enough to witness a hammerhead shark; and Holt’s Rocks (16 to 25 metres in depth), which – as the name suggests – features huge underwater boulders.
Other Underwater Activities
One of the most spectacular ways to explore the ocean bed is to take a journey on the Blue Safari submarine or sub-scooter. Doing this allows non-scuba divers to safely enjoy a superb encounter with Mauritius’ vibrant marine life. It also gives them the chance to see various wrecks dating back to the 17th Century.
‘Le Nessee’, a semi-submersible boat, can also take you on a safe and comfortable discovery trip under the sea. It offers a rare and unforgettable experience, providing optimal viewing facilities for all age groups from its below-the-surface viewing room.
For those who want to experience the feeling of actually walking on the sea bed, meanwhile, ‘Captain Nemo’s Undersea Walk’ is a must. Underwater Walk Ltd. has developed a unique solar-powered diving system that sends a constant stream of fresh air to helmets worn by the undersea explorers. This allows non-scuba divers to get as close to sea-life as is physically possible, without the need to undertake expensive and time-consuming scuba qualifications.
