My son Harvey won a competition to attend one of SAM’s summer holiday band workshops. He has had a fantastic time and really enjoyed trying out instruments other than his guitar- though I’m not sure if our neighbours would be impressed with him taking up the drums! A fantastic workshop, Harv is asking when he can go again. We thoroughly enjoyed coming in to watch the band’s performance today. Thank you to all involved for this amazing opportunity. More...

My son thoroughly enjoyed his singing lesson with Riccardo who knew just how to put him at ease, while having fun and actually learning something! We were made to feel very welcome by the knowledgable and helpful reception staff. Thank you, SAM! More...

SAM have been teaching in my son's primary school since September during school hours and are competitively priced. The half HR lesson is changed every week so he never misses the same part of a lesson in class every week. His teacher has been excellent and worked up an excellent rapport with my son which has clearly enthused him to learn well. I'm amazed at how well my son can play the piano 10 lessons in and I can see the novelty hasn't worn off. It's easy to see his weekly report and homework too. Great job by SAM and I'd heartily recommend. More...

I have been having drum lessons at SAM for several months, I started as a complete beginner and now am pretty competent, I am only learning for fun but thoroughly enjoy jamming with friends on the weekend. The tutors at SAM are very patient and experienced. The atmosphere is great usually many other lessons and musically minded people around at the same time. Overall great place to learn musical instrument! More...

I've been having singing lessons at SAM for the past 10 months.
The staff and tutors are all brilliant, always helpful and always on hand to help with your needs. Personally the lessons have helped me to find self confidence and to believe in myself as a performer. I have come on leaps and bounds, and without the support from the staff at SAM none of this would be possible. Fully recommended!! More...

For years I had always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and SAM was recommended to me by a friend. I wished I had done it years ago as I've had 2 amazing years going from not being able to play anything to recording a few songs. The lessons are always fun and they are very accommodating if you have to change your lesson at the last minute. The staff are very professional and the tutors are extremely patient if you are struggling to pick things up.Couldn't recommend them enough! More...

I have been a tutor at SAM for many years now and very much enjoy working withthe company. Every staff member is positive and helpful, issues are quickly dealt with. Since my time here, I was also provided with funding and support to design and buildthe perfect music production suite in which I record and teach at SAM studios. I wouldrecommend SAM to anyone, school, teacher and student alike. More...

I've been learning the oboe and harmonica for 2 years now at SAM and I think it's amazing, I have to travel fairly far for the lessons but it is really worth it! The whole staff are friendly and very accommodating. I have studied a lot of classical music and now looking into blues and some jazz. Thanks guys! More...

Lisa, Mum of Freddie 7 and Ollie English 9,( Hove)Rob, Ed, Mimi and Ben are excellent music teachers. Freddie and Ollie always leave their classes with big smiles on their faces having accomplished something different every week. Daniella and Katrina welcome us all enthusiastically every week and patiently answer questions from the children or help me rearrange lessons to accommodate holidays etc. Everyone we have met in the Academy is friendly, they have created a fantastic way for children to learn music in a fun and relaxed environment. We have recorded at SAM with our pop/rock band and found everything really good for an up and coming studio. The guys went the extra mile to get us a great production.

We rehearse at the studio regularly and find all the staff polite, friendly and supportive of what we are doing as a band.

We would highly recommend SAM, great value, friendly team.

SAM is the personable acronym of Sussex Academy of Music, a business started up in 2008 by two entrepreneurial youngsters in their early 20s.  The premises are a converted business unit in the Riverside Business Centre, and being so new, are well equipped with nothing missing or broken.  The situation is good as well - although it initially looks a bit soulless, a moment's walk over to the sea wall provides you with beautiful boats aplenty on the river and a lovely place to practise outdoors on a sunny Saturday.  They mostly give lessons to youngsters, but adults can be involved as well.  I went here, though, not as a student but to use their recording studio.  This proved to be a good move on the part of those who were deciding.  The studio was in good condition, with a little dais for drums and a medium sized area for recording - we fitted an eight piece band in here comfortably for a day's session.  Our engineer was an enthusiastic, friendly guy with a great musical ear and infinite patience, and really took care with it, almost as if it were his band, which put me right at ease.  I'd definitely recommend this place if you want to be well taken care of.
