What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
I shoot documentary-style as much as possible - or in other words, I avoid staging things. The best moments are real, and a good photographer will be able to find those, the seemingly magical moments that so easily slip away. I like to think I’ve developed a knack for that. When paired with the right equipment and environment, you get a special image.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
The one thing I want to know is what you want the end product to make people FEEL. More than what you want it to be, I want to know what emotions you want it to evoke. If it’s content for a your customers, I want to know what takeaway they should leave with about your company. If it’s a wedding video/photo, I want to know what your aunt who couldn’t make it loves about your family. If it’s your headshot for a job search, I want to know what you want employers to see in you. My hope is that as a creative professional, given that information, I can help find the best way production-wise to achieve those goals.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the opportunity to document the special things in the world on a daily basis. There’s beauty in everything - and I admit it, even I’m sometimes taken aback by how my cameras are able to make things just POP. It’s an honor to have the chance to make beautiful images.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I’d always aspired to be an entrepreneur, but I actually began somewhat by mistake - I made videos and took photos for class projects in school when people I knew began asking me to do projects for them. Before long, I had a growing clientele of small businesses, nonprofits, and individuals, and decided to invest in better equipment. About two years later. SurtzMedia has now served over 75 clients from Nevada to Boston, and I look forward to whatever may be in store down the road,

I consider myself to be a versatile and devoted creative professional with the ability to see and help hone your vision for your project. It’s possible that I might not be the best fit for the job you’re looking to have done, and if so, I’ll tell you. But if it seems we might be a good fit, my goal from the very beginning will be to deliver the best end product possible.
