You can't find a full-service bakery in many small towns like this. Â Martinsville, Va., a former textile hub, Â has managed to sustain some local businesses like this gem and residents know where and when to go for the good stuff. I usually drive the 55 miles up there knowing I can bring back some great breads (biggest seller is Cranberry, Oats and Walnuts). real New York-style bagels and the flagship dish of all Souithern cafes...fresh chicken salad. There are cookies, granola bars, muffins, pies, cinnamon buns, baquettes and seasonal favorites for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas...stollen, easter breads and babkas!Munching on some of those goodies makes the drive back a piece of cake.I drove up and had lunch last Wednesday and the joint was jumping about 1 PM. Â The roast beef New Yorker sounded good: Â Boar's Head roast beef, melted cheddar cheese, chopped fresh cabbage with Russian dressing on a toasted, split baquette. A side of house-made potato salad was a special recipe of the new cook, Lawrence. Â A good potato salad can be a work of art if you use plenty of chopped hard-boiled eggs and a good mayo...people like their Duke's around here. Â As long as it contains some nice ground pepper, apple cider vinegar and celery salt, you got yourself a winner. Â This did and was right on time!So, Lawrence assembled his/my master piece and brings it to me on a huge plate and one guy a table over says, "You need to take a picture of that" and looked up and I had my Canon G1X camera around my neck focusing the shot. Â It's with this review.The baquette was warm and crusty, the rolled roast beef thick and tasty with cheese melted into it and the cabbage made for some big XXX mouthfuls ....one of those sandwiches that you know you're going to spill onto your plate and maybe your lap but you don't care because it's so doggone good. Â Look at that potato salad portion! Â They really loaded me up and I don't mind taking half of it home for dinner or a snack on the way back to North Carolina. Â Before I forget, Rising Sun Bakeries is the result of years of hard work, taste tests and dedication by owner Darla Main-Schneider, a native of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Â There is a freezer case with microwaveable entrees, vegan quiches and side dishes if you want to take the night off from cooking. I'd recommend this establishment to anybody and with confidence. This is a real bakery with great bread and sweets, plus extras. My favorite bread is the sourdough. They serve lunch, and my favorite sandwich is their house-made chicken salad on cranberry-oat-walnut bread.

Come to this place! They have a wide selection of well-prepared baked goods. Â Cinnamon rolls, morning rolls, muffins, danishes, and other assorted baked sweets. We moved to Martinsville from Colorado and have had a very ROUGH time finding good food. Most of the restaurants in this town would not survive anywhere there was a choice. This place is a jewel  on our first trip we each had a sandwich and split a quiche all items were excellent we even got a loaf of some kind of cranberry bread to go that was just as good as the other items we had. This review is for the chocolate chip muffin. This is the quintessential chocolate chip muffin. It is like a work of art. It is the perfect balance . The batter is not too sweet, neither is the semi-sweet chocolate chips- which perfectly compliment the crust. There is a perfect ratio of batter to chocolate. The top is crunchy and delicious, and the chips remain melt-in-your-mouth. They started selling at the local market here and I gained five pounds. This is a quality bakery with old world style breads and everything else you can imagine, as well as some sweets and rolls. I'm thoroughly impressed. It's a wonderful spot. I headed there while visiting family and comfortably enjoyed eating a pastry and sipping coffee while doing some work. The staff are so welcoming and offered a sample of persimmon pie to taste. I got a loaf of cranberry walnut which my family thoroughly enjoyed. It was soft and just the right amount of sweetness. The hunt for a great baguette in rural Virginia is over. Â The Rising Sun Bakery is a magnificent hidden gem. Â I sampled their cookies, bars, baguette, and chicken salad sandwich and found myself more than delighted with everything that touched my lips. Â If I could give more than 5 stars for their pie crust I would. Â This is the first time I've purchased a pie (as opposed to making my own) and the crust has been perfect. Love of baking. I wanted to give back to my community a place where anyone could drop in and have all there senses filled with wonderful childhood memories. A happy place. A place where a customer is appreciated not just a number.
