I watch his VLOGS on Landscape Photography. Haven’t worked with him nor attended a workshop, but I can say Gary is an Excellent Photographer and he explains his approach to his pre-visualized images ahead of time in simple terms.....

Gary makes learning so easy, if you want a hands on training course this is the guy for you, I find it much easier to learn when I am shown what to do, not just sat at a desk, Gary gets right in there with you teaching you things that you need to know. What can I say about this team of professionals that hasn't already been put on here? Fantastic training, wonderful hospitality and both the indoor/outdoor locations were perfect! A massive thumbs up to Gary and Paula for their hard work with us on the five days last week. A mention must also go to superdog Scooby and the models we were lucky enough to shoot (metaphorically speaking!) A really good week learning about weddImg photography. Monday was learning the basics and getting a reminder about shooting in manual. Tuesday was on location at Ripley Castle near Harrogate. A beautiful 'bride' and a French 'groom' with a fantastic comedy accent!
Great tips and feedback on the shots and a fascinating session on post production with Photoshop on Wednesday.

Thursday was studio flash and portrait photography with a little girl in the morning and a slightly bigger one in the afternoon.

Today was off camera flash, put and about in the sun and snow.

I've come away buzzing - full of ideas and with memory cards full of fantastic shots for my portfolio and website. It was a great week!

Thanks to Gary and Paula and great to meet all my course mates. By the end of the week, I could almost understand what they were saying in last of the summer wine land.

Shoot smart are absolutely amazing !! In January I did the DSLR Day Course . Gary is a fabulous trainer . He explains everything so well so it's easy to understand ( although he needs to improve on his drawing skills ha ha ! ! ) . I came away feeling a lot more confident about shooting in manual and learning more about my camera and it's settings . Hisself and Paula made every single one of us on the course feel so welcome and comfortable . Paula puts on a great spread too .Food to suit everyone , thank you Paula . Professional, super friendly, great on location shoots (Hazelwood castle for us) enough food for a rugby team and more. Just completed the 1 day DSLR course. It was fantastic, I can't recommend it enough for any budding photographers, I learnt so much in a day and am excited to start using the manual functions on my camera. Gary is excellent at making the class fun but also teaching all you need to go manual in an easy to understand way. It is taught in a nice small group and both theory and practical tasks to understand all aspects. Well worth the money! Paula also puts on a mean spread and tea and coffee galore �. I completed the 5 day wedding photography training with Gary and Paula in June 2016. Before booking a place on the course, I scoured the internet, researching wedding photography courses across the length and breadth of the UK. I came to the conclusion that Shoot Smart offered the best value for money and one of the most in-depth courses in the country. I wasn't wrong. Paula very kindly answered a long list of questions over the phone then I went ahead and booked a place on the course and traveled over 400 miles from the Highlands to Huddersfield. Paula was able to recommend excellent accommodation nearby at Heritage Suites in Lindley and because I was enrolled on the Shoot Smart course, I received a discount of £5 per night in my serviced suite.

It was an intense yet thoroughly enjoyable week. I got on very well with Gary and Paula as well as the rest of the group and had many laughs. Four of the five days were spent in Red 5 Studios discussing business, learning Gary's trade secrets in Photoshop, practicing with the manual settings on our cameras, experimenting with lighting, shooting models in the studio and receiving feedback on our images. We also got outdoors for some training with off-camera flash. Throughout the week Gary explained everything clearly and was always happy to answer questions. Our days in the studio were broken up by Paula's superb buffet lunches and numerous cups of tea! We also photographed a mock wedding at Ripley Castle near Harrogate on the second day of the course. The beautiful 'bride' and handsome 'groom' were so believable and I've returned home with hundreds of images, many of which I'd be proud to include in a portfolio or on my website.

I've dabbled with the idea of wedding photography on and off for many years but the fear factor has always put me off. Completing this course with Shoot Smart has given me both the skills and the confidence that I needed. I now feel ready to build on everything I've learned from Gary and Paula and go out there, change my career and finally fulfill a life-long ambition of earning a living from photography. I can't thank Gary and Paula enough and I would highly recommend this course to anyone contemplating wedding or portrait photography. I have recently completed the 3 day wedding course with the extra day about the science of flash. Gary and Paula have a wonderful working studio. They share many tips on how to become a successful photographer. I found the mock wedding shoot very informative and realistic. The three days are packed full of information on photography workflows, photoshop workflows, lots of photography business advice. The 4th day where Gary explains and demonstrated the science of flash is well worth it. Gary and Paula share their knowledge gained from many years experience of running a very successful photography business. The course also offers post course support. Whatever level you are at you will find a course at Smartshoot. The courses include a very nice lunch and in my opinion and I did do my research they are very good value for money. Excellent 5 day course covering weddings and portraits plus loads more. Gary clearly teaches from practical experience and knowledge gained and explains it in easy to understand terms . Excellent value for money compared to alternative courses I have seen advertised. You are treated as an individual and extra guidance and support offered above and beyond. I have recently attended the 3 day Wedding photography course, one full day was spent at a top wedding venue in the area and step by step went through the full process of photographing a wedding. I have got some amazing shots and learned loads; both photography skills and the preparation for the day and how to manage the day, which are all vital skills for a competent wedding photographer. The rest of the course takes place at their amazing working studio. I wasn't going to stay for the 4th day... I am so very glad that I did. So did everyone else on my course. Gary will also advise you on equipment, as in what he would use and how to get the very best of what you have already... Since the course I have used what I learned to source and make a couple of small purchases one of which was only £1.84; which with my new skills I feel as moved my photography to the next level. The group of people on my course were from all over the UK. Like me they had researched lots of courses before deciding on this one. Everyone said they thought it was amazing value for money. Some were staying in local hotels which they were happy with. Their hospitality is as good as the course itself. If you look at their website you will see the kind of photos you can create on the course ... I thought I'd attach one which I did on my own to practice my new skills. I attended the 5 day course from the 13th of March 2017. I had been looking for training like this for a while and there is nothing like it here in Scotland. Couldn't find a duff review for this course so bit the bullet and have no regrets. It's pretty full on so be prepared. So much information you really need to be taking notes where you can. Gary really knows his stuff inside out, and Paula is a gem. A real photographer in her own right but only seems to get credit for providing the grub, which is Fab!! I was a total greenhorn and found the location shoots a bit challenging as I'm not used to working at that speed, or in the studio. I hope to go back for a portfolio day as soon as one is available, because this is a quality service, run by quality people. Sign up, don't have any doubt. It cost me as much for my accommodation and travel as it did for the course and I would do it again. More...

I spent a long time searching when and where to do a photography course and my money was very well spent attending here. Gary is an excellent tutor and our days were filled with serious learning, plenty of hands on work coupled with humour. My only regret was not doing the 5 day wedding course but I will certainly look at going back to enjoy one of the other numerous training courses available.
