Q&As

Book keeping , Accountancy, Licensing, Advice to Licensed Premises.
40 years experience as an Area Manager and a Licensed Trade Accountant allows me to be able to provide a quality, simple advisory service, interpreting results you have achieved from data(eg. invoices , sales )you supply me . I then prepare an action plan monthly from a Profit and Loss Account versus budget and last year, to highlight the most important actions required to keep you on track to achieve your goals.

The licensed trade is very challenging-there are lots of balls for an operator to keep in the air.
It's hard to see if you are making a profit with many variables, such as food and liquor waste, several part time staff and pilferage. The owner is often the host and is expected to be front of house all hours. Accommodation and pricing, service and marketing require technical competencies across the board in a very competitive market. I can watch someone's back, keeping factual records. I am not diverted by how many customers there are, or favourable comments. I report on achievement of profit to a budget I agree with the operator at the start of their business and can make several suggestions, from experience of over 700 licensed premises, on how to overcome hurdles in reaching those goals.

I am known locally, in Ceredigion, among accountants and publicans, hoteliers and restauranteurs as the Licensing Lady. Often people approach me in Aberystwyth, my home town, and introduce me to their friends as the licensing lady!
I love to teach accountancy (AAT Levels 2-4)and licensing law at Coleg Ceredigion. I like to feel I improve people's lives. I maintain I not only improve profits but help businesses to run more smoothly and profitably, allowing owners more time to enjoy life and create the stories they will entertain their customers with over the bar.

I have run my own business a few times in my career. I ran a golf club catering concept in my early years, and an accountancy practice for 12 years before this business. I sold that to concentrate on consultancy ,which has been very successful.
However, teaching accountancy one day a week inspired me to go back to playing with numbers, as I struggle to see what I need as a consultant from the reports produced by local accountants. Don't get me wrong-they are excellent for tax and year end purposes, but I need to see what gross profit my clients make on food or liquor or rooms. I need to know the seasonality of the business. These things require me to have a more in depth understanding of the business, which I get when I do the accounts myself.

I have 40 years experience of many types of venue in the UK. I know the local area and understand the people. I have good knowledge of the competitive offerings locally. I can interpret results from all the bits of paper publicans and hoteliers are climbing over to give just the relevant priorities monthly to an owner, saving time and money. I have several clients who can tell a prospective customer why they choose to stay with me over several years. I have been studying myself-to update my skills-last year I got a new degree in Applied Accounting-with honors! I'm also now a part qualified certified chartered accountant with just 3 more exams to go to be fully qualified-on top of all my previous qualifications!! Mostly though I think it is my experience that would set me apart.
