Quaint diner with food that's worth a trip from the city. The chef that operates the place has created flavors that really meld well together. Hundreds of places are just like this in SF, but none you can touch for the price. We love the ability of all-day breakfast. We've tried about five different things and haven't been burned once. Perfect chill spot for afternoon happy hour specials. More...

Had another excellent meal at Qube earlier this week. All our food was delicious!  The small green salads were as fresh as could be: crisp lettuce, mini heirloom tomatoes (sliced - love that detail! ), cucumbers and radishes. Dressing was homemade and yummy. Their garlic fries (fried in duck fat) were seriously the best I've ever eaten. Crisp, with plenty of garlic lightly sautéed in butter poured over the fries then the works were dusted with Parmesan cheese & parsley before being served. Pure gastronomical heaven!  I would recommend coming to Qube for them, if for no other reason!  Please don't stop there, though, because you would miss on opportunity to try one of their many special dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala or their Pasta w/ Chicken, onion & Pine Nuts which also featured sautéed spinach and parmesan cheese in a creamy sauce.  Both were scrumptious.  On this visit web were fortunate to be served by Hari, the owner of Qube. He couldn't have been nicer or have done a better job at serving and making sure the timing for all our dishes was such that we had time to enjoy our salad then the garlic fries and then our main dishes. If I have one regret, it is I failed to save room for dessert. I am definitely coming back again!!! More...

I stopped in with a friend for lunch and has the fish & chips, which were cooked the way I like them:  beer batter fish (4 pieces) and fresh hot french fries.  Atmosphere was quiet, a good place to talk and watch the cars go by on ECR.   Decor is vintage, and place is clean.   Our waitress was hard working, as she was the only one serving customers.   I'll go back again. I don't go there anymore.  The last 3 times I ordered my favorite fried Chicken Schnitzel, it was dark brown, not golden like usual. . and it was not moist like usual.  So I'm changing my rating to one star.  It's a shame because I've been going there for years.. bawhen it was the old Paul's DinerI tried it again recently. Harry cooked the schnitzel for me and it was just as good as I remember it originally being.  Thank you Harry. More...

This restaurant is great and we have never been disappointed, either dining in or getting take out.  The chicken schnitzel and turkey burgers were great last night. Please check out this little gem in the Indian Springs neighborhood.  I used to frequent the Villa coffee shop growing up here and am delighted the location is now home to Qube. More...

My girlfriend Jan and I come here often when I am in town from FRESNO...She and I dated in 1964 and for 2 years now we are back together, but mainly via phone. ..She lives in San Mateo....SO THIS PLACE is great....they have great service...and the food is never disappointing. I recently had the Rueben and it was perfect. I usually order breakfast but this time went with a sandwich...They have variety....pasta, soup, breakfast, etc. We have been coming her for 2 plus years and its convenient and right on El Camino. (I used to come her in the 70s and 80s when it was the VILLA HOTEL...and next to the great LANAI....we had meetings here and the food was always great. They serve JOES SPECIALs too and you will not be unhappy with the wait and crowds at Westlake Joes....there is no wait...but the 10 or so booths are fine (they have a big room too)....bottomless coffee and tea and a nice place to be when in San Mateo....great prices too. Found this restaurant through Groupon. Don't judge a book by its cover! We walked in and thought it was going to be a coffee shop type restaurant, but was pleasantly surprised with the menu and the food. A wide variety of cultures represented in their menu. My husband was really surprised by the $2 anchor steam beer. They have happy hour all the time for beer and wine. Give it a try you won't be disappointed! More...

My son really enjoyed this visit. He ordered breakfast - hamburger steak, scrambled eggs and French fries. I ordered the House salad with tuna.  I was given a generous portion of tuna salad over mixed greens with delicious cherry tomatoes. The cube has a very unique menu. Many different styles of cuisine. I had a butter chicken. My brother had lamb chops. Both were excellent. They have a happy hour with 50% beer and wine 25% off of higher adult beverages. I asked why it was named the cube. The waitress didn't know but pointed out that there were many cubes in the decor all around. More...

Went here for a company holiday dinner. Has a nice homey and diner atmosphere. The staff and chef were very nice and accommodating. The menu is pretty extensive. You can find a little bit of everything which I think is nice. Aside the bar and seating area, there is also a back room (where we were seated at) for larger groups. Suitable for small parties and group gatherings and nicely equipped with flat screen TVs, great surround sound system/speakers and even karaoke. Will definitely come again! More...

We had a wonderful post-Christmas family get together at the Qube this morning.  8 adults, one child, one toddler and 2 babies all had a great visit and breakfast together.  The staff accommodated us in the large upper room which was perfect for the roaming and noisy kids - we didn't bother any other guests!  And we had great food service and excellent food.  It was a perfect fit for our needs. Has that giant menu that the Restaurant Impossilbe guy HATES ("you're doing too much!"). But if you stick to the wheelhouse, it's quite rewarding. The koobideh (rice okay)  and the club sandwich were very vety good. The mixed drinks equally good. Still carefully navigating the menu, will report more., but so far, so great.Suggestion for the owner: swap the dance music for elevator music, maybe soft "Pulp Fiction" (Al Green...): MUCH more retro, fits the decor, plaus up to the attached retirement home (no joke) and annoys less. My husband and I have driven past this restaurant many times. I wanted to give it try, but he was hesitant. Finally we stopped there for dinner. As other reviewers have noted, it is very nice inside. It does have a diner feel and look which I like a lot. I really do not see diners here in California. QUBE is a typical "old-school" feel kind of diner. But in a good way....it's very clean, and they put out some mighty fine dishes. I live relatively close by, so I have eaten in, as well as called ahead, for pick up (take out).*.  Extensive menu*.  Great food*.  Friendly waitresses*.  Efficient Service*.  Great hours (open early till late)I have had their Egg Omlettes, and other various breakfast items, pancakes, crepes, etc.  I think the breakfast they put out is above par. Satisfying, and plentiful (good country potatoes too).  I've also had the opportunity to try their Lamb Burger.  Not bad at all. They make a decent Cobb Salad as well.  Pasta dinner Specials, I would pass on. Last but not least, they serve slice of yummy Key Lime Pie, if you so desire. On Fridays, they have awesome Clam Chowder.Give QUBE BAR & GRILL a try.  There's something on their menu for everyone! Qube Bar and Grill is highly underrated. They have most definitely improved the food, the menu, and the customer service over time. The atmosphere is always great and so is the food. Steaks are always cooked perfectly, burgers are huge and delicious, and omelettes are stuffed amazingly! Breakfast and dinner chefs are off the hook. Even though it is more like a diner, they have the best happy hour. Best part is are the waitress and their great customer service. Since it opened in 2015 Qube has nagged me like a loose hinge on a cabinet door; its stark Googie architecture and bright red neon sign light up my hippocampus each time I pass-  "need to go there, need to go there" - only to be forgotten moments later. Until today.WHAT IS QUBE?Probably overlooked by historians, Qube occupies one of the few remaining structures in San Mateo to exhibit the Mid-Century Modernist style born of the jet-age; note the sweeping, wavey eve and how it suggests a "lift off" of sorts... more a vestige than museum artifact, just to be fair.Essentially, this is a diner that calls itself a "Bar and Grill", but what stands out is it's airy jet-age modernist decor; the dining room is juxtaposed to the busy flow of lights and sounds of El Camino, the steep forward-facing windows are lined by a row of comfortable booths, across the isle sit tall Jetson's-like swivel chairs bracing a wide, sweeping bar that could double as a landing strip...all of this evokes the forgotten spaceage optimism of 50's and early 60's.  There is a second fairly large if non-descript dining room behind the bar area. "The Villa" senior living community shares the same address and parking area.WHAT DID YOU HAVE?* Grilled Ham and Swiss w/Tomato, White Onion on Rye    - Delicious, but next time I'll hold the tomato, it added too much juiciness. * Curly Fries    - Delicious, they were gone well before the sandwich, even if standard fareSERVICE:My server was friendly and welcoming, refilled my drink and checked on me regularly, took my order which included 4 changes to the listed menu sandwich, all of which turned out perfectly.AMBIANCE:Mid-afternoon on a Tuesday was perfect for sitting in a booth and getting some work done while I ate......an old guy behind me breathed heavily; the Salvadoran in front shared his life story w2 others, further down an old lady held a focused gazed out the window as she took intermitent sips from her coke...she reminded me of a Gary Larson character mimicking the absurd....TMZ  played on large TVs above the bar, just audible enough to not be audible...SUMMARY:Highly recommend and look forward to returning, mostly for the modernist/Art-Deco aesthetic, but also because the food and service exceeded my expectations and I was able to get some work done. I've been passing by Qube for 18 months now, I recently started working in the area.  I decided to try it a week ago and I've been there three times now.  The place is clean, they have a parking lot with plenty of space, I'm always greeted with a friendly staff member.  I love that they use fresh ingredients and REAL CHICKEN, not that fake processed stuff.  The prices are reasonable.  They take all major cards including AMEX.  They accept web orders and phone orders.  My only suggestions would be: more options for online orders and putting dressing on the side for take out salads.  For instance the online option to build your own salad, burger, sandwhich, where you choose everything from bread, lettuce, veggies, meat, cheese, dressing, etc.  I've ordered the creamy white wine sauce pasta with garlic prawns, it was delicious.  The risotto was ok, it had a taste in the sauce I couldn't put my finger on, I didn't care for all the peas, it was my first time having risotto, but if it had the creamy white wine sauce, I would've loved it.  I had the caesar salad, minus the egg, and added grilled chicken, delicious. I'm a huge breakfast fan and have tried most of the spots within my near vicinity. I was stoked when I saw a Groupon deal come through for this spot as I hadn't yet tried it. I drive past this place all the time but never thought to come in as it's attached to a hotel, so I didn't think the quality would be that great. I was totally wrong! I love the diner feel of this establishment, but with the modern twists - i.e. where you would normally have the open kitchen, you have a bar. Our waitress was really friendly, got our order put in right away, and our food came our a short time later. Everything was really tasty - I usually don't order anything sweet for breakfast, but their chocolate chip pancakes looked super tasty so the bf and I got an order to share (along with with our normal breakfast plate of course), and it was delicious. I would definitely come back again. More...

This place has been threw many names.                   The Qube seems to have made the food a lot better.            The chicken sandwich is really good . Five stars for management!!  Excellent.  Had an issue a  month of so ago.  Talk to one of the partners, and he took care of the issue immediately. Five stars for food and food preparation.  The cook is beyond excellent. Two stars for today's waitress (3/15/16).  Not only does she barely speak English, but will answer your questions without understanding what you asked, and then argue with you that you asked something else and you were confused!  Didn't get her name, but there was only two waitresses there Tuesday morning at approx. 11:30.  The other waitress was pleasant, but just as bad English.  I'm not complaining because of their bad English, but they should not be in an environment where English is constantly spoken and knowledge of the English language is essential.  But to argue about syntax More...

Being a native of the area i had almost forgotten that there was a little restaurant in front of "the Villa" senior living facility. (Previously was a Radison hotel.)  Its been called many things over the years and served a variety of types of food.   Now its been transformed into Qube Bar and grill.  A remarkably giant menu that is truly Californian in its collection of diverse types of food.  First off it serves breakfast all day.  Just for this alone it earns points with me. :-)  They have a nice selection of all the diner classics you can think of.  From there they throw in Kabab, pasta dish's, and a random dash of all sorts of food you wouldn't expect to get at the same place. such as Vietnamese Noodle Salad with Rice noodle, hot mint, chili, caramel peanut, coriander, nam nook dressing, and Szechuan Salt and Pepper Calamari.  what!? :-)On our inaugural trip (no doubt we will be back).  My wife got the lamb burger with mint yogurt sauce and it was Delicious! I got the Special, angel hair pasta with Cajun sausage and white creme sauce, which was great.  Service was very friendly and attentive and prices were reasonable. Decor is a mix of 50's/60's diner (pictures of Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart on the wall) with a modern twist and a view of the trains zipping by on railroad tracks (no doubt my son will enjoy coming here). Honestly my only complaint was that the menu was so extensive and varied that i couldn't easily decide what to have.If you are looking for a classic diner experience with a modern twist this is a great place to go, and bring your friends as there is plenty of space. Came in to this restaurant for the first time today. Got a great waitress named Elizabeth . The restaurant was packed with only 2 waitresses. She was handling everybody with a smile. Shocking because it's seemed unmanageable. The food was actually disgusting and didn't seem like a cook cooked it. Elizabeth did everything in her power to make us happy without her the review would have been a 1 star. She is the face of the restaurant they are lucky to have her . She was literally running to tables to make people happy I noticed food was taking a really long time and that was frustrating for us and everyone else . I would come back just for her I only wish the food was as great as Elizabeth . More...

So, to my surprise, I get this really friendly message from the new management at Qube. It was an invitation to try them again with their new menu  The responsiveness of the management to feedback was definitively a point scorer. I wish every business exerted this effort into ensuring customer satisfaction. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress (i so regret not getting her name). The listings on the new menu were indeed intriguing and inviting. It included hints of favorite Indian dishes and American classics. Well, this fusion was a welcomed surprise. We ordered the Calamari appetizer. It was just the right amount of spice. The calamari was flavorful and had just the right texture (see photo). It was served atop a spring mix of greens with a light coconut dressing. Yum. It was a great start so far.My son ordered the Traditional Club Sandwich (see photo). I was hesitant...he doesn't really like sandwiches. But, the sandwich turned out to be better than "traditional". It had nice thick slices of bacon and turkey. And, a fried egg! Surprise ! Now, he's a fan...of sandwiches and the restaurant. He got encouraged by the dishes so far and tried my butter chicken (photo). Now, that's a statement coming from a 13 year old. The chicken was tender and spiced deliciously. He's now a fan of that too.Harmail, who responded to my Yelp review, stopped by to make sure things were good. Well, I gotta say...things were good. I'm sure this new local spot will do well if this quality of food and service continues.Thank you, Harmail and Qube staff for turning our experience around. This was a great way to end a long work day and week! We'll be spreading the word and coming back to try more new dishes. More...
